Marlins at Braves Series Recap

Atlanta fell short of accomplishing a sweep of the Marlins, but won two of the three games in the series. Some notes from the three game set.

Brandon Beachy is really good. In 7.1 innings Friday night, Beachy gave up only two hits and three walks while striking out six and giving up no runs. After struggling in his past couple of starts, Beachy was back to normal which is very good for Atlanta.

Dan Uggla crushed his former team at the plate. Uggla only had one hit in each of three games, but two of those were three-run homers. He also kept alive his now 22 game hitting streak.

Martin Prado racked up the hits in the series. At the plate, he was 7-13 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Star-divide

Atlanta cranked out 12 hits against Ricky Nolasco, but only managed to score one run off of him in Sunday's finale.

Jose Constanza and J.C. Boscan both got their first major league starts and first major league hits this weekend, so congratulations to both of them.

Freddie Freeman accumulated five hits in the series and now has a 15 game hitting streak.

Eric Hinske hit a home run in game two of the series and also made a key fantastic catch in left field in the first game of the series.

Up next:

Atlanta heads to Washington for a three-game series against the Nationals. Also, HAPPY MICHAEL BOURN DAY.

There is little doubt that FW is smarter than your average bear. He does the best he can considering his restraints (ie. budget wise). And without a former GM with more clout in the organization in the dugout, this has become totally his team. We can still wonder about Proctor, and we can second guess about the Uggla extension. Yet in the end, he is an above average GM.

I'm very excited to watch the game today

I feel almost as much anticipation as the day before Teheran and Delgado’s spot starts.

Our guys need to get going

Philadelphia and the teams chasing us in the wild card have all been on hot streaks lately, while we’ve been playing .500 ball. Here’s hoping Bourn can help turn that around starting today.

Interesting note about the Nats' Gomes trade

Saw a note that said that the Nationals effectively traded up in the draft — the main reason they wanted Gomes was for the sandwich pick that they’ll get when Gomes becomes a FA.

That would be a risk...

Since he’s getting paid $1.75MM this season, he may opt for arbitration. 31 years old, part-time player, horrible defense…I mean, he’s not going to be a prized commodity during FA. He could take the sure thing, or risk it for perhaps a $0.5MM raise…or a minor league FA signing.

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?

Can't wait to give these chumps what for

Is it me, or does it seem like every time we play a weekday series in Washington, there is always a day game?

Phillies and Dbacks both have a tough week coming up (finally.)

Anybody else get the feeling from reports and his own comments that Michael Bourn was less than thrilled about getting traded? Not about getting traded to the Braves, but just in general? I hope he’ll get pumped about playing for a contender and not fall victim to uninspired play.

He is from Houston, so no surprise. I would guess he is one of those guys who end up back in Houston before his career is done.

Born and raised in Houston, I can understand if he wanted to stay there. Sounded like when he met the team he was a great guy looking forward to playing for a contender

Houston is his home town. He probably wanted to be an Astro his entire life and be part of a winning Astros team. As long as he makes the most of his time with the Braves, I think that’s understandable, and even commendable.

I guess I’m just used to everyone raving about having the opportunity to play for Bobby Cox. It’s safe to day Fredi doesn’t inspire the same enthusiasm…

There were a couple of trades in the past where players weren’t thrilled to be here, and left rather quickly. Happens sometimes. One in particular was peculiar because he was actually from the Atlanta area, yet couldn’t wait to get off the team. The name is escaping me, though. Outfielder somewhere in the late 90’s, early 200’s.

I believe it was B.J. Surhoff. I remember that he was less than thrilled about the trade.

But I have no idea why I thought he was a local. I am confusing him with someone we picked up around the same era from Redan.

Taking advantage of RISP must improve from this point forward.

It’s good to see us getting on base, but we really need to stop leaving them there.

Adding some speed should help that.

absolutely

He had a nice bunt for a hit against the Brewers a couple of nights ago.

It'll be interesting to see how things develop...

with a real top of the order in place that doesn’t make 70+% outs. If we can get healthy, I really like our lineup. Just needs a healthy Heap, Chipper, and Prado, and a return to form of Uggla and Heyward, and we’ve got a very potent group.

JordanSchafer Jordan Schafer
Gettin on this flight 2 Houston, kind of bittersweet but excited. Gonna miss my people in atl. Thx 2 every1 for all the support yesterday

Sad day for Schafe…

I still think he has the potential to be a good everyday CF in the mold of someone like Bourn. Braves just couldn’t wait anymore. I hope playing in Houston while they rebuild allows him to reach that potential.

by MississippiBrave on Aug 1, 2011 12:08 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I was pulling for Schafer to succeed in the leadoff role

as hard as anybody. He has so much potential, and he’s a gritty, hard working player…the kind people love to watch. But I think Wren had it right when he said that Schafer just isn’t ready to fill that role for a championship caliber team yet. He needs a few more years at this level. Not sure he will be as good as Bourn, but I think he has a chance to be. Hopefully he’ll get that chance in Texas.
