Braves Go to Extras Again, But Take Game Two 4-1.
If the first two games of this series are indicative of the rest of this season's NL East battle, this race will be tight the whole way. For the second time in as many games, the Braves and Phillies required extras to determine a victor. Fortunately, this time, it was the Bravos that took a 4-1 win in eleven frames.
Just like last night, the two starters threw great games. For Hanson, a long at bat by none other than Cliff Lee ended with a ball in the seats that served as the only run that he let cross the plate. Cliff Lee truly did look like a professional hitter at the plate when he crushed the tenth pitch of his third inning at-bat into the right center field seats to put the Phillies up 1-0.
Dan Uggla crushed his own solo shot in the fifth to tie the game up at 1-1. This was Uggla's third dinger in five games; and despite falling victim to the belief a time or two before, it really does look like he could be turning the corner. After nine innings the score was still tied and when Juan Perez came in to pitch the tenth for the Phillies, Braves fans everywhere were hoping for some redemption after last night's nine pitch, three strikeout inning. It wasn't happening in the tenth, though. The Braves had to wait until the eleventh.
After Eric "Big Damage" Hinske drew a leadoff walk from Brian Stutes, he was pulled for pinch-runner Wilkin Ramirez. Schafer bunted him over and Alex Gonzalez capitalized on a second chance to drive in a run. Ryan Howard dropped a foul pop which allowed Gonzo to drive in Ramirez with a single to take a 2-1 lead. McCann followed up with a homer to make it a safe 4-1 lead. Kimbrel then came on to do his thing, extending the rookie pre-break saves record to 28.
The Braves go for the series win tomorrow when Derek Lowe faces off against Cole Hamels.

Except they had already used their “closer”. Last night was more about the bad situation Proctor was put in with two better relievers wasting away in the pen (its also about why is he even on the roster with C-Mart in AAA). You can’t fault a guy for being what he is.
My question
Why didn’t we use Hudson last night? It’ not like we were gonna mess up his next start

Hudson did throw a lot in his last start and you certainly don’t want to get him injured so I’m not prepared to leap that far. No Cory or Craig before Proctor was the truly baffling thing.
I dunno, he could make a decent relief appearance that would be about 33% (at the most) of his average start. That is a drop in the bucket, and considering that Huddy is very much able to start on 4 days rest, a relief start wouldn’t hurt him much.

Not that unbelievable when you look at the lineup the Phillies are putting out there. Victorino being out is pretty painful.
by philsandthrills on Jul 9, 2011 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Absolutely. I’m just saying, Victorino has been about half of our offense all season. Without him, there’s not much of a threat, especially against lefties.
by philsandthrills on Jul 9, 2011 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions
I see what you are saying, but Rollins, Utley, Howard, Ibanez, are all pretty threatening in the lineup. And Uggla and Heyward have been seriously underachieving along with Gonzo being a black hole and injuries to Prado and Chipper there is really no reason to say that not having one player would be that huge of an impact.
And anyway, Braves pitching has been dominant this series (keeping step with Phillies pitching) so assuming that the presence of Victorino would have created even a single run is a big assumption.

I think the fairest way to put it is
Neither team has been playing to its potential, due to a mix of injuries and uncharacteristically bad performances. They’re still the best teams in the NL, and they play each other really hard. Let’s just sit back and enjoy the rivalry.
Yep. I was really excited before this series and I haven’t been disappointed as they were easily the most intense games thus far of the season for me.

I think the Phillies are a much better team than to totally rely on one player like Victorino. Though Victorino has done well, both Braves starter’s have been righties and Victorino’s right/left splits would mean that his impact in this game would already have been minimized.
Sure he is good, but he isn’t the entire team and you can’t assume he would change the entire course of a game against dominant pitching.

Perhaps they haven’t totally relied on him, but it’s been pretty close to it. At the very least, he’s been our best offensive player by a long shot.
by philsandthrills on Jul 9, 2011 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions
I think the bull pen injuries are the biggest difference. Both teams have excellent starting pitching and offenses that sputter from time to time each missing 2 of their best hitters…however, if the Braves were playing this series without Kimbrel, Venters, and O’Flaherty ala Lidge, Madson, and Contreras would you really have confidence in Proctor and Sherrill setting up Linebrink? Scratch that, I forgot about Moylan…but you get the point. Like I said after last night’s game…this series would only really matter if one team swept and did so convincingly, and that possibility ended today
"Have you seen this Perez guy pitch? I'm a pacifist, but I've never seen anything so violent look so beautiful."
I'll agree with that.
Without a sweep in either direction. The result of this series has a pretty low impact on the big picture.
I am always amazed at this idea
when wins and losses are really like drips of water. Every one counts, and adds to the whole.
The area where I agree is with momentum.
At this point, it very much matters who wins this next game. Impact on the big picture? You are right when you say it is less so now. But like in basketball, it is an important event when one team pulls ahead of the other. And the Braves are closing in on the Phils. And that matters.

and they were 7 games up last year on July 22nd…how a team plays down the stretch is really all that matters and the only thing that can help with that is something that builds momentum….a la a sweep of a rival team. Yes, every game is important, each counts the same, blah blah blah…in reality, players don’t think that way.
"Have you seen this Perez guy pitch? I'm a pacifist, but I've never seen anything so violent look so beautiful."
Yea the bullpen injuries are a big impact, but one that is minimized by the ability of Philly starters to consistently go 8. You have 3 good guys (Perez, Stutes, and Bastardo) that should have easily been able to handle the 9th (and maybe the 8th) for the whole series but the lack of scoring necessitated extra innings. It was the extra innings that made the injured Philly pen a big impact.
I think that the series doesn’t decide anything of course. It isn’t even the ASB yet, however with two great games in the books there is an increasing tension that will carry over throughout the year so I wouldn’t call it insignificant.
"You know when it comes to racism, people say: ' I don't care if they're black, white, purple, or green.' Uh, hold on now: purple or green?! You gotta draw the line somewhere! To hell with purple people! Unless they're suffocating, then help 'em."
Tell that to the Braves hitters….
I really don’t know what to make of his delivery though. He hardly moves forward and seems constantly off-balance. Dunno how athletic he is but he seems to invite a soft bunt to his side.
"You know when it comes to racism, people say: ' I don't care if they're black, white, purple, or green.' Uh, hold on now: purple or green?! You gotta draw the line somewhere! To hell with purple people! Unless they're suffocating, then help 'em."
easy on Perez, he came out of nowhere. I may be president of his fan club right now, but it may be short lived. He isn’t a 32 year old journeyman for nothing…maybe he is the Jose Bautista of relief pitchers, but you’ll have to excuse my skepticism.
"Have you seen this Perez guy pitch? I'm a pacifist, but I've never seen anything so violent look so beautiful."
Perez's WHIP is horrid...
When he throws I almost think he’s in front of one of those kids games that radar the speed of your pitch…calling it inefficient would be kind.
Fair enough, but the ability of Philly starters to go late in games is one that helps pick up the slack left by a hurting bullpen.

One thing about bullpen arms is that you can do very little and change the result a whole lot. If you tweak a delivery or a dominant pitch just a little bit you can go from journeyman to good MLer.

I'd not call any of Hamels, Lee, or Halladay the third best pitcher on the team
that said, our no. 5 went against their no. 1 in Halladay yesterday, and our no. 2s locked up today.
As long as we can get to their bullpen, we should play them well

Yea but JJ and Huddy (especially with his ground ball rate in such a hitter’s park) not starting we definitely don’t have our playoff rotation in. But in a playoff series the Phils are almost automatically going to start Halladay-Lee-Hamels.

schafer however...
will remain in the leadoff spot, which for whatever reason doesn’t bother me as much. Perhaps it’s that when he comes up I still have one tiny bit of hope.
Schafers skill set (minus obp), and future all point to being a leadoff hitter. Sea Bass has no buisness EVER being a number 2 hitter.
Except OBP is THE leadoff skill. He’s a below 300 OBP in AAA even. Also, speed is mostly wasted at the top of the order. (see http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2009/3/17/795946/optimizing-your-lineup-by)

Without looking at the link, it makes sense because you would assume that the need to manufacture runs would be less at the top part of the order, whereas with sparse hitting speed is more important in the bottom part of the order.
Still doesn’t make speed in the lead-off spot irrelevant.
"You know when it comes to racism, people say: ' I don't care if they're black, white, purple, or green.' Uh, hold on now: purple or green?! You gotta draw the line somewhere! To hell with purple people! Unless they're suffocating, then help 'em."
Correct. Speed is not irrelevant. I said it is ‘mostly wasted.’ Really, speed is good as long as that speedy runner is not stealing bases, but rather is using the speed to go 1st to 3rd or 1st to home. If they are using speed to steal bases, they are putting outs at risk unnecessarily.
Yes, speed is a good thing. You’d like ALL of your players to be fast, in addition to being mashers, of course.
All else being equal, if you have two guys who have the exact same batting line, same OBP/SLG, but one of them can steal bases…..then you should put the faster guy lower in the order, in order to optimize the opportunities for scoring that the weaker hitters have. The other guy is going to get more opportunities to score because he has really good hitters hitting behind him.
My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.

Link: http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2009/3/17/795946/optimizing-your-lineup-by
The reason why speed is wasted at the top of the lineup is that an extra base hit will score an average runner from first. Stealing bases ahead of power hitters puts valuable outs at risk. It is better to risk those outs in front of singles hitters at the bottom of the order, because a single will score a runner on 2nd.
I wouldn’t say that it is “wasted” but I understand your point.
"You know when it comes to racism, people say: ' I don't care if they're black, white, purple, or green.' Uh, hold on now: purple or green?! You gotta draw the line somewhere! To hell with purple people! Unless they're suffocating, then help 'em."
Just read it
All things considered it has some good points. I heartily agree that OBP should be king in the leadoff position. And because that is the case, I would agree that if Schafer cannot get it together soon to consistently get on base, he should be moved to a much lower position, like sixth, as the post said.
I see what is meant now about power hitters getting the leadoff guys in, so speed shouldn’t matter so much.
That all being said, it still seems to me that having a speed guy on base rattles the pitcher, so the next people in the lineup get better pitches. I don’t know if that is total BS, or can be measured (I would think it could, like does a pitcher give up more hits when speed gut is on base), but it mildly refutes the argument.
I still agree that OBP is paramount.

I agree
Uggla hasn’t complained, hasn’t made excuses, and busts his butt both on and off the field.
As we’ve discussed, in a recent radio interview he even admitted he’d boo himself if he could (meaning he’s not taking any boo-birds personally).
I’m rooting for the guy, and I truly believe he’s on an uptick.

The 3 strike-outs aren’t inspiring, but it was against very tough pitching.

I will take three strikeouts, when accompanied by a HR.

This...
Dan Uggla’s made a career out of timely hits and killing mistake pitches.
We don’t need him to hit .330; we need him to hit clutch homers, etc. (like yesterday).
He’s doing this much more frequently.

I am just happy that Kimbrel got into the game before we lost
I’ll not comment on the stupidness of the fact that George Sherrill was pitching with the bases loaded in a situation where the game could have ended, while Kimbrel pitched with a cushy three run lead.
My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.
by willlinn on May 17, 2011 2:13 PM EDT
If we had pitched Kimbrel in that position
he would have been pinch hit for in the 11th. Who would you want to close the game out?

Closing a game out with a 3 run lead is 10x easier than a extra inning where 1 run scored loses the game. We used our best reliever in the easiest situation in the ballgame. People really don’t understand this?
In a game against a team like this, wouldn’t we expect just a one run lead? Does that make a difference, or would you think Kimbrel should still be used in that situation?

“You don’t save a pitcher for tomorrow. Tomorrow it may rain.”
-Leo Durocher
Extra innings are the same way. If a reliever is available (that is, he hasn’t pitched in three straight games, and he’s healthy) then you use him if he’s your best guy. You might end up scoring 10 runs in the top half of an inning, in which case you don’t need to worry about saving the win. You need to worry about surviving while the score is tied for as long as possible-especially if you have a better bullpen than the opposition. Letting the Phillies see Scott Proctor while we still had Kimbrel and they were running out of quality options was an atrocious, disastrous, idiotic move. Doing the same thing a day later with George Sherrill is 99% as dumb.
My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.

He had last night off – for some inexplicable reason.
He also was used in another game earlier this week with a 3 or 4 run lead. Why?

Sad thing is, last night he wasn’t even off, since I’m sure he was warming up in the top of the 9th and 10th innings.
Besides, the “little bit overworked” comment is just speculation. Either Kimbrel was available or he wasn’t. And he clearly was.
My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.
by willlinn on May 17, 2011 2:13 PM EDT
The choice was not Prcotor or Kimbrel. That pair is more a duality than the are competitive. That is like saying you want some sort of ambiance but you can’t decide between pitch black and blinding lights.
I like the idea of putting Kimbrel in only when a win is possible just to minimize his workload. But you have to stay competitive in the game by putting good arms out there in order to give your team a real chance to stay in the game, but in no way should that ever be Scott Proctor (not that anyone here didn’t already know that.)
"You know when it comes to racism, people say: ' I don't care if they're black, white, purple, or green.' Uh, hold on now: purple or green?! You gotta draw the line somewhere! To hell with purple people! Unless they're suffocating, then help 'em."

Just watched the highlights
I don’t get to see any games. I loved that way that Freeman knew to just come off the bag when Lugo threw it wide, and then still step back onto the bag before the runner got there. It speaks volumes that the guy has good “baseball sense”. I know the thinking is that 1st base is the least demanding position, and I agree, but having a really good fielding 1st baseman, especially when it comes to catching the ball from the other infielders, will prove an invaluable asset for a long time to come. I feel real good about Freeman.

A wise man wrote that in about the 6-7th inning… I don’t know why y’all doubted it would happen. Extra innings or not.. this was a beautiful win by our Bravos. The bullpen showed their strengths, the hittting provided a few clutch moments… McCann has to be one of the clutchiest hitters in the league this year… (it does mean something) And as much as losing Chipper will suck, I’m excited to get Prado back in there and have a legit 1-2 punch… Schafer will see much better pitches hitting in front of Prado as opposed to the black hole of offense…
Glad we pulled this one out.
