Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies Series Preview

As Joe Simpson would say, the Braves are hotter than a dancing bobcat right now. Following an awesome four game sweep of the Rockies, the Braves roll into Philadelphia to close out the ceremonial first "half" against a team with which we are all very familiar. Rest assured, the fans there at Citizens Bank Park will be on their best behavior and with the Braves coming to town, the Phillies will finally get the long-awaited media attention that they deserve.

All kidding aside, baseball fans like us have the Phillies shoved down out throats on a daily basis. I think I speak for us all when I say there is nothing I would enjoy more than to see the Bravos trounce them right into second place with a three-game sweep in Philly (feel free to comment with things you would enjoy seeing more). Sitting just 2.5 games back, the Braves could overtake first place if they were to win all three in the series. Although this is not the likeliest of all possible outcomes, I certainly believe it could happen if the Braves' staff does what it has been doing all season.

Star-divide

So far this season, the Braves have gone 5-4 against the Philadelphia ball club and have gained ground on the first place club as of late. On June 18th, the Braves sat six games back of Philadelphia, but have gone 14-3 since, to make up 3.5 on the Phils. While the Braves will inevitably have to contend with the Phillies all season, it would be great to pick up at least a game on them in the standings with two of three this weekend.

I'm not much of an investigative stat guy. This is not because I don't have the interest or desire to be, but because I have neither the time nor the inner wiring (intelligence) to get that sort of thing figured out. So by using words, I can tell you what you already know: the Braves' pitching staff is ever so slightly better than that of the Phillies on the whole and their bats are ever so slightly less potent. The Phillies' one primary area of weakness may just be their bullpen. Unfortunately, the Braves may not see a whole lot of that 'pen if the three starters that they face do their usual thing. Just take a look at those innings pitched stats for the Phillies' big three. Pretty stout.

I have to go on a really annoying business trip to Chicago for this next week. One of the few things that will ameliorate the situation any is if we get to savor being in first place for the duration of my trip. So there’s pretty much nothing I’d want to see more than a sweep.

I really hope that somehow today’s game doesn’t get rained out. If it does, a double-header will be annoying to deal with this weekend, but if it gets scheduled until later, then there’s no way we end the first half in first place.

that does not mean nothing

six games is a lot of games against cy young pitchers.. 4 and 2 might not mean a ton, but six guys.. That means our guys are stepping up to the challenge.. Don’t tell me that means nothing..

In the world series, would it mean nothing to beat a cy young pitcher? If they won would you say its just small sample size? where does this argument limit itself?

by willlinn on Jul 8, 2011 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

It means nothing.

Last year Halladay and Hamels shut our asses down, so I would consider these 7 starts an anomaly and certainly not anything indicative of the future. The best I would hope for is to stay with a run or two against Halladay and try to get to the bullpen…

by SS451 on Jul 8, 2011 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

The Phillies offense is not that great this year

They are in fact, below average (but that’s still better than the Braves). While their pitching staff as a whole is worse than the Braves’s pitching staff as a whole, the top 3 for the Phillies (who we will face for the 3 games) is actually in the top 4 in NL by WAR (Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers is 2nd) with Roy Halladay way ahead by 0.9 WAR.

With all that said, the Braves obviously still has quite a good chance to win each game. The way that the team has risen up to the challenge against the big name pitchers this year (including beating all three of these guys) is a good sign.

OT but...

I had a dream last night that the Braves were playing a game, but they were on a giant swimming pool-type surface where water sprayed up out of the ground in random places. But the bases were there and everything else was normal…except they were all playing in swimsuits instead of uniforms, and everyone had a hairy chest, except for Dan Uggla….

And Jordan Schafer almost slid down and busted his butt coming in to score.

if ESPN would talk about the Phillies and their AMAZING staff just a little more! It would certainly be better than constantly hearing about our subpar group of bums all of the time! I mean, they are just SO much more superior than us and yet all anyone can talk about are our bunch of loveable losers! We cannot argue the "slighty better" right now...

because they are in first place! The very definition of “better” in sports. If we win the series, we will get plenty of credit. I would be happy with 2 of 3, but it would be simply deliciously sweet to get the sweep.
I think we will see good things coming from unexpected places within our team. Keep in mind, we have got people producing from all parts of the club right now. Hell, even our manager seems to have his head on straight lately, what with pulling EOF before he totally blew the game last night.
I feel REAL good about this series.

If I’m not mistaken, that was his first or second RBI since June 25th. He has lowered his avg like 30 points in the past month. Not trying to be a downer, I just don’t get how we have so many guys hitting well and we put the one doing the worst in the 2 hole. I’m done now, preaching to the choir

by jwb0007 on Jul 8, 2011 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

The ironic thing is, Prado is pretty much your canonical #2 hitter. But when he comes back he’s going to have to hit leadoff, unless Schafer turns things around between now and then. (The last two games have been encouraging, but we’ll see.)

Doesn't bother me much...

Halladay and Lee keep the ball close to the zone. We won’t have to worry as much about Sea Bass swinging at ridiculous pitches because the ball’s going to be around the plate.

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?

by cthabeerman on Jul 8, 2011 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

In Seabass’ career he’s 5-20 against Halladay with 1 BB 1 SF 1 double and 3 Ks. Not exactly a huge sampling, but he’s put the ball in play a lot against him.

Tale of the Tape

It’s going to be a fun series to watch. Here’s my take on it
Starters: Phillies
Bullpen: Braves
Offense: Braves (Braves are hot right now offensively).
Defense: Even
Misc: Phillies. They’re playing at home.

Overall there are a lot of interesting matchups in this series.A key in all three games in forcing Philly to use their pen. We can’t let Roy H and Lee settle in.
There is more pressure on Philly. Even if we just win one of three we’re still in good shape.
My prediction is Phillies win 2 of 3. But like I said. We’re still fine if that happens.

Actually I might rate the Braves defense a bit better, depending on who starts

Given the lineups that the teams are likely to field tonight, a position-by-position comparison of defense:

C, Schneider vs. McCann: Even
1B, Howard vs. Freeman: Advantage Braves
2B, Utley vs. Uggla: Advantage Phillies
SS, Rollins vs. Gonzalez: Even
3B, Valdez vs. Chipper or Conrad: Advantage Braves. (If Orr starts at 3B for the Phillies: Orr vs. Chipper even, Orr vs. Conrad advantage Phillies.)
LF, Ibanez vs. McLouth: Advantage Braves (if Hinske starts in LF for the Braves, advantage Phillies).
CF, Martinez vs. Schafer: Advantage Braves
RF, Francisco vs. Heyward: Even (if Brown starts in RF for the Phillies, advantage Braves).

I’d give a light edge to Schneider over Heap and a slight edge to Seabass over Rollins.

Oh, and Ryan Howard is very underrated. He’s gotten a lot better with the glove.

no the mets are still better at most positions:

Schnider/Mcccan – tie (schnider has better d)
Kotch / Delgao – 38 hrs from carlos
Castillo/Johnson – castillo can return to a .300 hitter but jonson barely wins
wright/jones – no contest, wright
reyes/who??? – reyes wins, best ss in the majors
tatis/diaz – tatis raked last year
beltran/anderson – beltran is an all-star
francouer/church – church raked before his concusion he will rebond

santana/lowe – santana is the best sp in the majors
perez/hudson – perez has better potential plus hudson was hurt last yr
pelfrey/jurgens – jurgens gives up 2 many hits
maine/vazquez – vazquez wins barely cuz he had a good 07 but maine has more potential
redding/campillo – redding through more innings, campillo would have a 500 era if he starts again ppl will figur ehim out

k-rod had the most svs, he is the best lcoser in baseball, no contest

I’ll have to make sure I watch him tonight. I haven’t seen much of Schneider so I was going by what little defensive stats for catchers I found at Fangraphs, which rates them near even. I’ll have to look more into how they calculate their ratings.

He definitely had/has a better arm than Heap. He posted back to back 50% CS marks in 03 & 04, leading the league both times. That number has dropped considerably over the last few years.

Ziegler was in tears after the game when he found out about the death, according to the AP.

According to the report, Ziegler said when Stone told people tending to him that his young son was “up there by himself” and asked them to check on the boy while he was being put on the stretcher.
