Braves Acquire Backup Catcher Wil Nieves From Brewers
The Atlanta Braves have acquired backup catcher Wil Nieves from the Milwaukee Brewers, in exchange for cash considerations. Nieves is a 33-year-old career backup who has played for Washington, San Diego, and the Yankees. He was currently on the Brewers triple-A team.
The Braves likely acquired him as backup depth behind David Ross and J.C. Boscan, and he will probably be assigned to triple-A, though the Braves may prefer a guy like Nieves with more Major League backup experience to a guy like Boscan. Nothing to get too excited about.

the exponent in the equation is a matter of preference and "fit" it can vary depending on what the user believes to yield the curve that best predicts a team’s ability to win games.

only now when he skipped a throw to first, it wouldn’t be intentional

I'm fine with this move
A guy with experience over a prospect with none at the major league level. And just cash? Good move

It's hard to call Boscan a prospect at this point...
He’s been in the minors for 14 years.

Can everyone stop with the sarcastic comments
Not one of them was funny.
Good pickup. Seeing what CB said he is obviously a team player that is a great player in the dugout
Shrimp, Steak, Liquor, and Pasta
.
Oh come on sarcasm is fun. And we better hope he isn’t ever in the dugout. I don’t care how great a guy he is if he can’t play baseball anymore. He wasn’t worth any cash.
I kinda loved it.

He should be in the dugout as soon as possible to backup Ross… No offense to the journeyman but I’ll take Nieves over Boscan any day.

I’d take a tree stump over Nieves but to each their own. I promised I wouldn’t waste my time anymore on such a bad player.
Interesting deal... Teams all year have had trouble finding catching help...
I wonder why the Giants never picked this guy up… Or any of the other C hungry teams… Team player, knows the game and hopefully, with the chance to back up our great Ross, he will be an asset off the bench. We’ll see what happens but I like this kind of low threat, low cost deal.

Yep. But my gut feeling is that Wren isn’t going to make any major moves and while he won’t give up the farm, he also won’t acquire anyone very useful. I’m expecting another Rick Ankiel type trade out of him. But we’ll see. I could be wrong.
I think I saw him in the Phillies lineup...

This is stupid
That GM for the Braves needs to be signing someone to catch the Phillies because no one can hit Left handed pitching?
This has nothing to do with catching the Phillies, it has to do with having a reasonable backup catcher for the next 20 or so days while McCann heals up.

Nieves has been placed in GWI.
"Baseball is the only place in life where a sacrifice is really appreciated."
I thought that was what would happen. The Braves picked up Nieves to take Boscan’s place while Boscan backs up Ross. When McCann is ready, I expect the Braves will DFA Nieves.

Moves
PPL don’t get so tore up with the Braves moves or lack of. Remember all the marbels are in the Braves circle! They have all the prospects and young talent. Last thing we want them to do is the same mistake they made with Texas a few years back in the Teixeira deal. And signing a vetran backup catcher is another good move, and lost 0 prospects. Wren has done nothing but press the right buttons since he took over. So be patient and don’t forget, this team is dangerous! PLUS Moylan is almost ready to come back which is like signing a free agent. Just hold on peeps!

what a crazy game last night..
this is in response to McCann to the DL: They needed a catcher to keep the farm system strong. Bethancourt has got a great arm and his star is rising, but won’t be for another two years. I’m excited about Viscaino, I’ve seen him pitch. Single-A to September call-ups all in one year is crazy. I really think the Braves are gonna make a move, but I think it will b small moves, like the ankiel trade, last year. Excited about the game tonight!!
Wait. Tehran, Delgado, Minor, or Viscaino(sp)?
Weren’t available to catch? But I thought they were the future?

Braves as trade phantoms
Wren always works for a bat at the deadline. We seem quiet because we are in three-team trade talks. That it happens is immaterial. Wren’s ego says we do something dramatic. Martin brought up the best argument I have heard: we may be going for guys not considered available on the hot stove. Our pitching depth allows for that. His Matt Kemp/Adam Jones idea is ingenious, and may prove to be accurate.
