Braves Disable Brian McCann, Likely To Disable Jordan Schafer

It was pretty much official last night that the Atlanta Braves were going to place catcher Brian McCann on the disabled list with a strained left oblique muscle. The Gwinnett Braves are reporting that catcher J.C. Boscan has been promoted to the Majors, but that outfielder Wilkin Ramirez has also be recalled to the Majors (barely a day after being sent down when Chipper Jones was activated from the disabled list).

There is no word yet from the Braves, but the best guess is that Jordan Schafer will be placed on the disabled list with a jammed finger he suffered sliding head-first into a base. Schafer was also hit on the wrist by a pitch last night in the umpteenth inning. The combination of those two injuries could be forcing the Braves to disable him. With Schafer's unfortunate history of wrist injuries, let's hope this one is not too serious. There is a possibility that Chipper Jones could go back on the disabled list, but Schafer is the more likely candidate.

The loss of McCann is the big blow, though a quality backup catcher like David Ross should help lessen the impact. With Schafer also hitting the DL, the Braves may have a greater sense of urgency to make a big trade before Sunday's 4pm trade deadline.

UPDATE 4:05pm

Mark Bowman confirms via Twitter that Jordan Schafer has indeed been placed on the DL, and Wilkin Ramirez recalled in his place.

I don't think the Braves have a choice.

How can they not make a move with McCann injured, Chipper gimpy, Schafer injured, and some other hitters struggling?

They are only 3.5 games up the WC. That’s not a comfortable lead at all.

The question is not should the Braves make a move, but who should they bring in? While we need to make a move, I don’t want the Braves to overpay out of desperation. Hopefully, they won’t.

I’m still hoping for A. Jones (only because you mentioned him yesterday, not because I feel he’s available), Bourn, Rasmus, Beltran, or Upton (in that order). I don’t trust Upton, but he’s better than we have right now…

Also, obviously, we need bullpen relief. Badly.

This will be a fun week!

If Rasmus is available at the reported price...

Wren should be on the phone asap to see if he can swipe the kid before it becomes official. At the reported price, Minor, Hoover, and Gearrin would be just as good a package if not better.

I hope this turns out like Ludwick...

a player and price I’m shocked we didn’t jump in on and top. At least Ludwick didn’t turn in to much of a miss. Hopefully Rasmus is the same, but damn, that hurts if we could have had him for say Minor, Gearrin, and another. I think the Cards’ playoff desires make the package need to be MLB ready and without learning curve, but I’d think the young, cost controlled nature would suit them needing to pay Pujols.

And Rios

Anthropolous is looking like the shrwedest GM in the business right now.

http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/

by Mr. Sanchez on Jul 27, 2011 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think he’s going to be that cheap. TOR had to give up Frasor and a good prospect, plus take on salary ($7.2m) to get Jackson to flip him. If you add up all the pieces, it probably isn’t a deal that the Braves could have afforded.

by pbrfan on Jul 27, 2011 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Minor is

way better than Jackson. There isn’t a GM out there who would want two months of Jackson over 6 years of Minor. We wouldn’t have needed Jackson to complete this deal.

by frozendesert on Jul 27, 2011 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Rasmus is overrated especially by us, but getting him for basically 3 relievers plus a starter who might well become a reliever is ridiculous (Stewart).

by Ultada on Jul 27, 2011 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

And taking a $7.2m hit by taking on Teahen, who is a negative fWAR player for the last 2 years. So that is basically writing a $7m check unless he somehow turns it around. Apparently money between TOR and STL is also being worked out – not sure which way it goes.

by pbrfan on Jul 27, 2011 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Well let’s see how much money St. Louis gets but obviously the Braves didn’t need to make the initial trade for an asset.

by Ultada on Jul 27, 2011 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Right, just saying that the $7m has value that you can convert into comparable value in terms of prospects. It gives you an idea of the overall ‘price’ that TOR had to pay to get Rasmus. Looks like TOR might be taking on a few bad (but small) contracts from SLT, too.

by pbrfan on Jul 27, 2011 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

If we had wanted to deal,

there was no way we needed Jackson to do it. So the price of acquiring Jackson is a moot point.

by frozendesert on Jul 27, 2011 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

SLT needed a starting pitcher and relievers. It would have been a very difficult trade to engineer (obviously would need to do a 3-way trade with someone), especially when we can’t give up any relief pitching and can’t take on any salary.

by pbrfan on Jul 27, 2011 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Why

‘obviously’? Are you telling me we don’t have a surplus of pitchers?

by frozendesert on Jul 27, 2011 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Edwin Jackson would lead the Braves in fWAR right now

by pbrfan on Jul 27, 2011 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

2 months of Edwin Jackson

is worth less than 6 years of a top-20 SP prospect in the minors. That’s undeniably true.

by frozendesert on Jul 27, 2011 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

And ‘obviously’ we can’t trade any relievers when we are trying to acquire them.

by pbrfan on Jul 27, 2011 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

SLT was not going to take Minor. It would have taken a proven starter (Jackson is having a very good year, too). So in a sense, it would have taken Jackson or a starter of that quality.

we were wanting a Righty..but if were interested in lefty CF..Span hits for better average and actually does really well against lefties..OBP is good and walks-stikeouts are neutral and low..span doesn’t have the same speed bourn does..but still quick. just a thought.

I like the Span idea as well. They have Ben Revere who is otherwise blocked, and the Twins are always looking for ways to build their team with young, cost-controlled players. I think a package centered around Minor would work.

Span's on the DL

Concussion. Hasn’t appeared in a game since June 6. He’s currently on a rehab assignment and the Twins are thinking they will recall him next week. But we’ve all seen way too many players who had a concussion put back in the lineup before they are ready. It’s not clear to me that Span is going to be able to make a contribution during the remainder of this season.

I understand being upset we haven’t made a move, but we can do better than a guy with questionable knees that only wants to play a position we have covered already. How to create a show on USA

1. Your main character is forced to leave his/her job/lifestyle by extenuating circumstances.

2. Your main character is forced to do something relevant to his/her previous job/lifestyle using skills acquired, but applies their acquired skills in an outsider venue.

3. Your main character has experienced some past trauma or calamity, making it difficult for them to trust or have easy relationships.

4. Your main character is generally attempting to regain something or someone that they have lost.

5. You have ancillary characters that are quirky, with repeated and identifiable mechanisms for viewers to latch on to so that they can quickly grasp those characters without requiring an extremely high quality of writing to give them depth.

6. Your characters adapt to their new situation and gradually find their new circumstances fulfilling, and learn some important lessons about life by helping people.

I’ve just described Monk, Burn Notice, Royal Pains, White Collar, Fairly Legal, and (probably) Necessary Roughness.

There’s clearly also a second formula in play, in which I don’t know the pieces as well, but was used to create “In Plain Sight,” “Covert Affairs,” “Suits,” and “Psych.” Those resemble each other in terms of using the same formula, but it’s clearly not the same formula the other 6 shows have used.

My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.
