Braves need a reliever RATHER than another hitter

Let me explain.

If its not an "O'Ventbrel" situation, they are not good enough. Linebrink, Martinez, Gearrin, and especially Proctor are not getting it done.  PROCTOR NEEDS TO BE RELEASED!  Sherrill has been solid though, if only he can pitch to righties as well as lefties.  According to mlbtraderumors.com, the Braves have some interest in Tyler Clippard.  I think Clippard would be a welcome addition, since we don't know how Moylan is gonna be if/when he returns. It also seems like Medlen will not make it back this season.  If the Braves can get both a hitter and a reliever w/o giving up top prospects, Great!  However, If I had to choose, I'll take the solid reliever with proven experience, like Clippard.

Hopefully, when Chipper returns, that will be an added boost to the lineup that includes Dan Uggla and Jason Heyward starting to heat up.

Why

Why not both? Last year we made two different trades for what we needed.

I just think we need to use our guys better. Our BP is plenty good enough. Hudson said it was the best bullpen he has ever seen.

The Braves have potentially the three best relief pitchers in the NL. What they need to do is score more runs so that they don’t have to be run out there every night.

so you're saying...

that you’re fine w/ a Rick Ankiel and Kyle Farnsworth type addition again? Not me!

In a perfect world, I would go for B.J. Upton and Tyler Clippard to boost the ball club. Upton is having a down year and has not shown the potential for a few years, but perhaps a chance to the NL is just what he needs.

Why not call up some of our guys from AAA who have been very good out of the bullpen. Abreu, Richardson, or Varvaro. None of them have been to the majors this year and all are on the 40 man roster. Who knows one of them could give solid innings.

I do agree though that some kind of trade for a reliever will have to be made. I very much doubt it’s a high profile guy.

I live in the Royals market so sadly i get to watch almost every Royals game but one guy that they have we should try to pry away is Greg Holland. I know most of you have never heard of him but he quietly does his job consistently.

He’s thrown 51.2 innings between Kansas City and AAA. With 30 coming at the majors.

30 innings, 19 hits, 8 BB’s, 39 K’s, .900 WHIP, .179 avg. against.

Probably wouldn’t take much to get him but a solid middle relief guy.

He plays in the Mexican league, so his numbers are way low…have to account for the lack of hitting talent instead of simply looking at his amazing ERA and K:BB ratios.

I think we should be looking at Eduardo Sanchez…

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?

I wouldn’t mind giving a few of those AAA relievers a try, but remember that Ascencio is tearing up AAA and was pretty terrible for us. It could be nerves though – he left everything up.

As far as Holland, would KC trade someone who still has options?

by theatlfan on Jul 25, 2011 1:36 AM EDT up reply actions

ascencio needs to make the transition now

before Kimbrel, we thought he would be our next closer.. He has the stuff, he is lighting up AAA.. He just needs a real shot in th eBP

Ascenio, even when he was Luis Valdez...

was never thought to “be our next closer”. Never.

I don't know

We given him a few and he failed so miserably that we cast him out immediately. He’s got to get the ball down to play in MLB – if it’s nerves then maybe we should give him an extended shot; if it’s simply something that he can get away with @ AAA, then he’ll always be a AAAA player.

Your Thoughts?

I think this is an unnecessary, uninformed post. George Sherrill and Scott Linebrink have been great for us since May. Cory Gearrin is a great ROOGY. Scott Proctor sucks and shouldn’t be on this team, but in other news the sun came up this morning and the sun set this evening.

We need a right-handed reliever. There’s no denying that. But to make a post and say that our some of our relievers “aren’t getting it done” is stupid. They’ve excelled in their roles this season.

It's been referenced in the latest rosterbation thread and in a separate fanshot

No need for it again, but I would not just post this without stating my opinion, that’s just a waste of time and relatively ignorant.

Clippard would be a profound upgrade from some of our other guys in the pen, and would create a 5-headed bullpen monster capable of geting out any sole batter in any situation.

Sherril
Venters
Kimbrel
EOF
Clippard

in no particular order, also I think their strengths and weaknesses speak for themselves, With each of these guys available, at any point in time during the game, the 7th inning through the 9th inning would definately be covered, once again given any situation.

My concerns with Clippard, are in fact his overuse, before also reading about the Braves scouting him, I never really looked into his stats or studied him as a player. Thanks to commenting from another TC member, Clippard’s stats and production did falter off at the end of last year from overuse, and this year he does not seem to be getting used any less. So, mostly it’s just something to think about when considering his true future impact he could have.

While I do not necessary see a bullpen move as completely necessary, I do not see anything wrong with it either. In all reality, I would like to see a call-up for Chapman just to see what he’s capable of. Liney has pretty much done his job all season, and when it comes down to it, I do believe he has helped this ballclub more then he has hurt it.

Proctor sometimes shows why the Braves keep him on the roster, and other times more then not he also shows why us fans are yelling for his release. He is definitely the most replaceable member of this pen.

Martinez has been excellent for the Braves, while taking into consideration his role, arguably he could be considered one of the best long releif pitchers going in the game. His value to this team is very unappreciated and it shows how sorely he was missed in his brief absence from the club. Although he did have a rough first outing coming back, a minor bump in the road so to speak, but I would honestly expect nothing less than his usual stellar outtings the rest of the way.

Sometimes I wake up grumpy; other times I let her sleep.

I think this is a great point

I used to think a RP idea was ridiculous “we have the best bullpen in the majors”….. The one stat that doesn’t lie is the fact we are wearing DOWN O’Ventbrel, arms just don’t last that long. Moylan may come back, but he’s gonna be rusty. That’s ONE reliable 1 run 7th inning man, (if you include Moylan) two 8th inn. guys, and Blitzcraig.

Obviously the closer is the closer. The fact that O’Ventbrel is 3 of the top 4 most used guys means that Fredi ‘feels’ that those are our only 3 reliable guys in the close games, Moylan and Medlen are virtually non-factors for our postseason run, we need a right hander that could give either EOF or Jonny the night off. Or we could let Linebrink serve up 0-0 0 out fastballs in the ninth >:(

I would NO DOUBT love to have Clippard (the second best year of any reliever in the MLB this year behind Jonny). Of course he’s 0/5 in save opps so he’s no good there, but it would just make sense to give up one high ranked prospect or two mediocre ones for the best bullpen in the majors no doubt!

I got Venters fever.

by Cody Arrington on Jul 25, 2011 1:10 AM EDT reply actions

I do think if we can lock up a spot by the last week, and I think that’s quite possible- we can at least rest O’Ventbrel a few days before the post-season. We just need Linebrink and C-Mart to step up for a month (though they failed this weekend), or for our starters to go deeper, though that’s hard when every game is a 3-2 nailbiter. The real issue is the offense can’t open up big leads to allow for low-leverage situations.

That said, September’s gonna help.

by Broccoman on Jul 25, 2011 2:05 AM EDT up reply actions

That 0/5 may not mean much if they weren't true save opps.

Regardless of the BP arm argument, I can't see not getting a hitter

We’ve got 2 guys in the starting lineup with an OPS > .800, and only 1 more (Prado) over .750. Chipper would give us a 2nd over .750, but we simply need more. Sure, it’d be nice if Uggla and Heyward caught fire, but at this point, we can’t count on it. We have to upgrade the O.

One thing brought up by the ESPN announcers that rings true to me is that an upgraded O would save the wear and tear on the BP. Quite simply: we don’t to pitch O’Ventbrel when we’re up by 5. We need more easy Ws and adding some O on top of our top Ps will get us some.

by theatlfan on Jul 25, 2011 1:44 AM EDT reply actions

You beat me to it

I was gonna mention the whole deal with a better offense creating some relief on our relievers . And another thing that was in this post is that Heyward is heating up . I don’t see him heating up yet . It could still happen for him . But right now it seems as though he is still rolling over on a lot of pitches instead of driving through them . I would almost rather see Nate hitting 2nd right now . He seems to be alittle more patient at the plate and is getting on base more frequently . I know him hitting in front of the pitcher has helped his OBP a bit . But he looks so much more comfortable at the plate right now .

Trade with SD - get Bell and Denorfia

Great bullpen arm and RH outfield bat in one trade

Linebrink, Martinez, and Gearrin are perfectly capable of doing their jobs.

I don’t have a problem with trading for a BP arm if it doesn’t cost much but we need a hitter way more.

Right-handed reliever would help more than a bat.

Considering cost/effectiveness of reliever and bat — of course a Beltran or Upton would be a huge upgrade. But if they are settling for the Crisps/Pagans, reliever probably helps more.

If we're reluctant to include a Minor or Delgado for an Upton or Bourn...

who I mention as opposed to Beltran because at least they would be around for longer than just 2 months, but if we’re reluctant to give up one of those arms (assuming Teheran and Vizcaino are the more highly regarded of the 4), I wonder if including a lesser prospect for a reliever ala Tex and Mahay, would help make something happen.
