Great job by the collective pens
Northcraft and Shafer, have both been promising starters so far, hopefully Shafer can get out of this minor funk he’s been in.
It’s good to see C-Beth. starting to make some proper adjustments and seemingly starting to come around in AA.

Also,
It’s been a pleasure to see Salcedo consistantly (which I think best describes his season) make the proper adjustments to continually keep having success.
Pastornicky is showing off his stick in AAA, but still the question remains if his glove will prove worthy enough for a starting spot sometime next year.
Also, maybe we have our RH out of the pen in Chapman, I really liked what I saw out of him in ST this year, and he’s done nothing but get hitters out almost everytime he’s been thrown out there. More then likely we wont see him until next year, but it would be nice seeing him instead of Scott (Instant Anxiety) Proctor.
That Miller kid, you know the K machine, looks pretty good so far. What is that his 6th time striking out the side this year? I wonder if they will try him as a starter? I think they’ve thrown him 4 innings a couple of times,in rel.
Overall, the one player I’m continually keeping my eyes glued to is Drury. He is possibly the player (as of this moment lol) I’m mostly wondering about, and have the least inkling of an idea about who he is
Obviously he’s only 18 and hasn’t had much experience, as of yet, but still I have sooooo many questions regarding the youngster
What is his timeline? 4 years maybe?
What kind of player can he be?
Obviously he seems to be playing a little over his head, and will eventually come back down to Earth, but what is his true potential?
Is he a top position prospect if he keeps it up into next year?
What major leaguer does he resemble the most, if any?
Can anyone provide some info. on the 18 year old kid? Please!

Re Brandon Drury: Happy to oblige you!
although you really need to try to keep better
Seriously, here is what I can offer:
I am now officially interested in Brandon Drury, a 6’2", 190 lb, R/R, third baseman picked in the 13th round of the 2010 draft as a 17 year old signee of the Oregon State Beavers from Grand Pass (OR) HS. Baseball America’s draft summary of Oregon players said:
The best high school position player in Oregon is Drury, a baseball rat who has a strong, athletic 6-foot-2 build. He keeps his hands back at the plate, shows bat speed and gets good backspin on balls. While he was a high school shortstop, he has below-average speed and will have to move to third base or the outfield as a pro. He has also committed to Oregon State, but scouts believe he is more motivated to play professionally. He is batting in the 3 hole of the Danville lineup.
So my question is, speculatively speaking: big upside potential or too soon to say?by fandave on Jul 9, 2011 6:20 AM PDT
I like Drury a lot. I was in Danville today and I think he definitely has the most upside of any guy on that team.

Bullpen Options
Although Cory Gearrin has been somewhat disappointing so far, the Braves have had some great success giving even very young, inexperienced relievers a real opportunity at the ML level. Consider, for example, most recently, guys named Kimbrel, Venters, and O’Flaherty.
So, it seems hard to understand or accept why the braintrust continues to go with a 34 year old, fading veteran like Scott Proctor who has obviously failed get the job done, instead of trying another younger reliever off the farm. Right now, we have the following AAA RH relief pitchers on the 40 man roster, either of whom could not only be readily deployed to the ML staff, but probably upgrade it: Juan Abreu and Jairo Asencio.
Abreu is a 26 years old fireballer: In 39 G, he has done very well, despite control challenges: 2.09 ERA, 47.1 IP, 33 H, 27 BB, 67 K, .191 AVG allowed, and 1.268 WHIP. In his last 10 G, he has been especially nasty and basically lights out (albeit wilder than ever): 0.73 ERA 10,12.1 IP, 6 H, 11 BB, 22 K0, .143 AVG allowed.
Asencio, 27, did get a short opportunity in the MLs earlier in the season and was pretty lousy (6 G, 10.1 IP,16 H, 5 BB, 8 K, .340 AVG allowed), but given his overall performance in AAA still might deserve another chance. For the season, his numbers have been pretty excellent across the board: 32 G, 18 SV /18 SVO, 1.45 ERA, 37.1 IP, 27 H, 14 BB, 49 K, .197 AVG allowed, 1.098 WHIP; but even better in his last 10 games: 1 W / 0 L, 7 SV / 7 SVO, 0.00 ERA, 12.1 I, 6 H, 6 BB, 15 K, .140 AVG allowed.
However, the very best choice might be 24 year old Jaye Chapman, who in his 6th year in our system has emerged as a very viable option. Here are his combined numbers from Mississippi (9 G) and Gwinnett (30 G):1.75 ERA, 51.1 IP, 28 H, 17 BB, 61 K, .159 AVG allowed, 0.877 WHIP. His last ten games have been superb, particularly in avoiding free passes: 1.38 ERA, 13.0 IP, 9 H, 1 BB, 14 K, .191 AVG allowed. Although he’s not presently on the 40-man roster, this could be remedied by moving Stephen Marek (who apparently will never get a shot with us anyway) to the 60-Day DL or DFA’ing Proctor.
The primary benefits of this approach are low cost – both in terms of salary and not having to sell off additional top 15 prospects (that is, in addition to those who we may trade for a RH bat); relatively low risk – we could still probably acquire an established RH reliever after July 31st, if necessary; and very highly expedient given that Proctor needs to be gone ASAP.
This ^
Ever since ST and Chapman got the “extended stay,” I’ve really admired the kid. He’s got good stuff, not electric, but he gets the job done.
That’s all that matters correct, well sort of?

I remember watching ST, (and please note, I am just getting into the minors. a big thanks primarily to cb)
And just thinking to myself who the heck is this guy?, much like I did Venters when I first saw him.
Just, of course, with Chapman I wasn’t quite as excited, but nontheless the thought still surfaced lol.
