Salcedo Hits in Loss and Beckwith Continues His Assault with a Homer in Danville Win in Tonight's Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap
Several of our best performing hitters had excellent nights. Edward Salcedo got another extra base hit and added a walk for good measure in a loss. William Beckwith continues to demolish the Appy League and is now leading the league in OPS. Brandon Drury also collected some more hits to push his average up to .351.
Norfolk Tides 4, Gwinnett Braves 2
- Jose Constanza, DH 1-3, BB, .316 Avg
- Todd Redmond 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K, 3.24 ERA
The Braves got a nice start from Todd Redmond but the offense was woefully inadequate. The three-four-five-six hitters went 0-13 and no one on the team got more than one hit. There's not a lot to say other than that.
Tennessee Smokies 1, Mississippi Braves 0 - Suspended
This one was suspended in the third inning because of some torrential rain. They will make the game up tomorrow at 5 PM.
Lynchburg Hillcats 5, Potomac Nationals 4
- Marcus Lemon, LF 3-5, 2B, HR(1), CS(2), .238 Avg
- Andrelton Simmons, SS 1-4, 2B, BB, K, .304 Avg
- Joey Terdoslavich, 1B 2-3, 2B, 3 RBI, BB, .273 Avg
- Logan McGill, C 2-3, 2B, .269 Avg
- Mark Lamm 0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, o BB, 0 K, 6.75 ERA
The Hillcats got out to a 5-0 lead behind good pitching from Aaron Schafer but the bullpen almost gave the game away by giving up two runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings. Recent draftee Mark Lamm made his second appearance for the Hillcats but this one was not as successful as the first where he struck out the side. Lamm, this years sixth round pick, has advanced farther than any other 2011 draftee.
Rome Braves 4, Greenville Drive 5
- Matt Lipka, SS 2-4, RBI, BB, K, .240 Avg
- Edward Salcedo, 3B 2-4, 3B, RBI, BB, .279 Avg
- Chris Garcia, 1B 1-3, HR(11), 2 BB, K, .344 Avg
- Evan Gattis, C 2-5, 2B, RBI, K, .288 Avg
The Braves tried hard to come back in this one by tying the game in the top of the ninth, but the Drive scored the game winning run in the bottom of the frame to take the win. Edward Salcedo had a nice game and pushed his season OPS up to .808. Over the last two months he has put up an OPS of over .850 and he has also cut his strikeout rate this month. I wouldn't expect to see him in Rome for much longer. Which means I need to get up there soon.
Danville Braves 11, Burlington Royals 4
- Fernando De Los Santos, 2B 3-4, 2 2B, RBI, .308 Avg
- Brandon Drury, 2B 4-6, RBI, .351 Avg
- William Beckwith, 1B 2-5, 2B, HR(5), 5 RBI, K, .329 Avg
David Filak allowed four runs in 3.2 innings of work and his ERA in Danville is now up to 9.74 after posting a 7.54 mark in Rome. He was nearly unhittable in the Appy League last season so it makes me wonder what is going on with him that he has gotten this bad this fast. And on a side note William Beckwith currently leads the Appy League in OPS. He is sporting a .455 wOBA and a .306 ISO to boot. Nice season so far.

Beckwith
Just based on the few pics I’ve seen, I would have guessed that he probably wouldn’t be able to develop any positional versatility at his size; but he’s 5/5 stealing bases and has 3 triples so maybe there’s enough speed there to convert him to the outfield if he becomes big league ready while we still have Freddie locked up. I know that thought is really premature considering he’s only in rookie ball, but what’s the point of daily minor league threads if not to project all our prospects to reach their absolute ceilings? :D… Even in 95 plate appearance samples, 1.119 OPS’s don’t grow on trees.
He has a thick looking face but his body isn’t as hefty as his face would lead you to believe. I honestly don’t know what to expect out of the guy going forward but so far he his walking in 13% of his plate appearances, striking out in less than 20% and is hitting for power. His BABIP is very high right now but if you believe minor league line drive numbers then he is getting about 20% lines drives and just over 40% grounders, meaning his high BABIP is less fluky than you would expect. I would say his performance so far is legitimate and he needs a real challenge before the end of the season.
William Beckwith is a sleeper prospect in our organization. - yondaime4
When it was said he was 5/5 in steals
I was like wtf? really?…b.c the only real part of him i’ve seen is his face.
Nice to know though he has got a slimmer body, that does def. help if our org. decides to move him somewhere else around the diamond.
Which would ya’ll say is the more intriguing prospect? Beck, or Chase L?
I was going to throw Kubitza in there, but I figured he would be the overwhelimg response.
At first glance I really did like this draft class, but I’m starting to like it more and more everday. That’s also without seeing Gilmartin. or us signing Navery, which I think could put this draft class from a solid B, to a low A

Man would Torii Hunter disagree with you…
We fill this hole with foam and your man will float right up. I don't think that will work. Me neither, but I have a truck full of foam and six kids to feed, come on man, I need this. What about lowering a rope. A rope made of foam?

The catcher in Lynchburg’s name is Shawn, not Logan. Not trying to nitpick, just thought you might have him confused with someone else.

Should we be excited about how good the Danville offense has been?
Or is it just way too early for all of these guys?
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

Yes and No
There are definitely some legit prospects @ Danville that are tearing the cover off the ball, but there are also some MiLB vets who supplement the lineup. Beckwith, Kubitza, Ahmed, Drury, and prolly Reyes are all “OK” in ARL considering their age and when they were brought into pro baseball. Sure, there are others in the lineup who could be classified as MiLB vet or simply behind the ARL prospect curve, but I think there is a good basis of batting prospects we should be getting excited about.
Still, all of these kids are at least 2-3 years away – if not closer to 4-5 – and a lot can happen between now and then.
Good to know, thanks. Seems like that team has scored 5 or more runs in all but 1 or 2 games so far so it did seem like there might be some decent offensive prospects in the bunch. Seems like they’ve also been giving up a lot of runs as well though.

Wouldn't worry too much about the Runs Scored
Sure, it’s always best to have a bunch of P prospects throughout the system, but this team has a double whammy working against them. In general, Ps are a little behind when they get into pro baseball – learning to work every 5th day, going against a better class of hitters 1-9, etc. Then kick in the tandem starter system on top of that, it isn’t unexpected that young Ps will struggle some. The 2nd whammy is that we are so strong in P prospects that we’d only naturally not actively recruit a bunch of strong P prospects for the lower minors over the last year and a half…
