Atlanta Braves Eric Cordier Allows Just One Hit (And Five Walks) While William Beckwith Continues to Demolish Opposing Pitchers
Norfolk Tides 3, Gwinnett Braves 4 - 11 Innings
- Christ Carter, DH 2-2, 2 RBI, .286 avg
- Eric Cordier 6 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 8 K, 4.03 ERA
Another microcosm game this time from Eric Cordier. For a guy with great stuff and poor control this game is a great example of what Eric Cordier brings to the table. He racked up the strike outs and allowed just one hit. He actually walked the bases loaded in the fourth inning and allowed the lone run on a ground out. At this point I don't know if his control will ever pan out, but his pure stuff is going to be useful in the Atlanta bullpen.
Tennessee Smokies 3, Mississippi Braves 5 - 6 Innings
- Ernesto Mejia, 1B 1-2, 2B, 2 RBI, .313 Avg
- Mycal Jones, CF, 2-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI, .221 Avg
This game started really late and I have work early in the morning so I apologize ahead of time.
Winston-Salem Dash 4, Lynchburg Hillcats 1
- Andrelton Simmons, SS 2-5, K, SB(12), .304 Avg
- Adam Milligan, LF 3-4, 2B, HR(12), K, .291 Avg
- Christian Bethancourt, C 2-4, 2B, .241 Avg
- Zeke Spruill 7.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R(1 ER), 3 BB, 4 K, 3.06 ERA
The Hillcats had twice as many hits as the 'Dash' but couldn't collect on the baserunners. Poor fielding in the fifth inning allowed three unearned runs to score behind Zeke Spruill. Adam Milligan is still crushing baseballs and I think should get a run at AA before the season is out. That will be the test to see if his approach is going to work at higher levels.
Rome Braves 3, Kannapolis Intimidators 1
- Tony Mueller, CF 3-5, 2B, K, .244 Avg
- Evan Gattis, C 2-5, 2B, 2 RBI, .284 Avg
- Ryan Weber 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 2.66 ERA
- Chasen Shreve 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 3.83 ERA
The R-Braves got some excellent tandem starting from Ryan Weber and Chasen Shreve. Weber continues to get gorundballs at a ridiculous pace. He picked up seven tonight against just one flyball. He has a 1.81 groundball rate at Rome this season. He has actually had a very nice season at Rome even though he has bounced between starting and relieving all year. He is still just 20 years old so there could be some potential here, though with his small frame he will almost certainly be in the bullpen for the long haul.
Danville Braves 1, Burlington Royals 2 - 11 Innings
- Brandon Drury, DH 1-4, BB, .330 Avg
- William Beckwith, 1B 3-4, 2B, BB, .333 Avg
- Lucas La Point 6 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K, 1.86 ERA
A great pitching performance from Lucas La Point was spoiled by an equally great performance from a combination of pitchers from the Royals. William Beckwith continued his assault on the Appalachian League. His OPS is getting close to 1.100 now and he has walked in nearly 16% of his plate appearances. La Point has been pretty good though he has allowed 30 hits in 29 innings. He has just three walks and a 1.75 ground ball rate.
GCL Braves
Off Day
DSL Braves 4, DSL Tigers 2
- Daniel Castro, 2B 2-5, 2B, RBI, .203 Avg
- Robinson Arno, LF 1-3, 2B, 2 K, .225 Avg
- Carlos Sanchez, C 1-4, 2B, RBI, K, .205 Avg
- Luis Madrid, DH 2-3, RBI, .246 Avg
I am really just drawing a blank on what to write about the DSL guys tonight. Can I get a crowdsource on this one.

Mejia the new Canizares, or does he have more potential?
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

Canizares could hit for a high average, but didn’t have the power a first baseman needs. Mejia can’t quite hit for the high average, but he does have a ton of power. And he’s only 25. But still, I wouldn’t expect him to ever get much of a chance in the Majors.

Good outings from the pitching dept.
La point has looked excellent so far this year, so has W.Beck and Drury

Sounds very holy
And would they pleeaaasseeee move Milligan up. He needs to get a chance to prove himself against higher competition.

Adam Milligan
Adam Milligan & Andrelton Simmons are 2 guys i’d like to see in AA by the end of this year (although Milligan a lot sooner). Once Pastornicky gets bumped to AAA, I hope Simmons moves to AA. Then Salcedo to A+ and gets exclusive work at SS. I think Salcedo has more value at SS than he does at 3B.
What do you guys think?

agree on Andrelton & Pastornicky
I would imagine that both Andrelton S. & T.Pastornicky would get promoted soon, their stats and reputation would seem to warrant it. Not sure I agree with moving Salcedo up until next year since he needs to be better steeped in the fundamentals of the game.

Cordier obviously has talent
but nothing’s worse than a reliever who comes into the game walking people. He’s gotta cut down on those to get a shot.

drawing a blank on what to write about the DSL
I believe Carlos Sanchez is a relatively well-touted 17-yearold prospect with good po’. Happy to see him over the Mendoza line.
Final: Tennessee Smokies 4, Mississippi Braves 5
Taking over for Randall Delgado (4 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 6 K, 57 Strikes/ 97 Pitches), 24 year old lefty Richard Sullivan got the Win with 3 innings of relief (4 H, 2 R/1 ER). J.J. Hoover pitched a perfect 8th inning (w/ 0 K) for Hold #5 and Big Bad Billy Bullock struck out the side in the 9th (w/ 1 BB) for Save #7. He now has 53 K and 19 BB in 37 IP.
Mycal Jones drew a walk in his final BB, which pushed his OBP up to .349, despite a .221 Avg. His walk rate is right at 15% (35 BB / 235 PA).

Milligan? Milligan? What about Gosselin?
I see all the clamor for Adam M, but wheres the love for Phillip G? Quietly having maybe the best Hillcat year for a position player who is not from Curacao. Leads the team in ribbies, walks, and triples. 2nd in doubles, runs, hits, total bases, 3rd in OPS & OBP.
http://www.talkingchop.com/2010/11/19/1823659/braves-top-3-minor-league-second-base-prospects
….he projects to be a solid defender. Gosselin is bigger than your average second baseman and he’s an above average athlete. While he doesn’t have any one outstanding skill, he’s more than solid across the board and, perhaps most importantly, he’s a polished player who won’t take long to develop. He’ll start 2011 back in High A with Lynchburg and there’s a good chance he finishes the year in AA.
I don’t see how you can argue anyone is having a better offensive season than either milligan or terdoslavich. Gosselin has been very good recently but it had taken a while. I also didn’t write about him because he went o fer today.

The Goss-man is clutch
Terd & Milli each hitting barely over .200 with runners in scoring position. PG on the other hand hits .320. Sure T-slow & Mulligan lead in homers, and we all know chicks love the long ball – but I bet Goss is the only one who get to the show for any length of time.
BTW yondy, enjoy reading your minor league updates…
