Pastornicky Cycles His Way To The Top Of The Atlanta Braves Minor Leauge Hot Sheet

William Beckwith put up a 1.531 OPS for Danville this week.

Tyler Pastornicky had a hit in every game this week, including hitting for the cycle, while William Beckwith and Brandon Drury were a dynamic force in the middle of Danville's lineup.

Who's Hot?

  1. Tyler Pastornicky SS, Mississippi Braves -15-34, 2 2B, 3B, HR, 3 RBI - Pastornicky collected a hit in every game he played in this week, and highlighted that by hitting for the cycle on Tuesday. For the week he hit .441 with a 1.088 OPS.
  2. William Beckwith 1B, Danville Braves- 8-17, 3B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 5 BB, SB - Beckwith actually had a better overall week than Pastornicky, with a ridiculous slash line of .470/.590/.94/1.531 and a 2 homer performance in a doubleheader, but you can't hit for the cycle and not be the top guy on the Hot Sheet.
  3. Brandon Drury 3B, Danville Braves -10-27, 4 2B, HR, 6 RBI - Drury is the youngest player on Danville's roster, but he's not playing like it, putting up a .370 average and 1.000 OPS this week. He capped off his week with a 3 hit, 2 RBI performance on Sunday.
  4. Ernesto Mejia 1B, Mississippi Braves - 12-26, 3 2B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 4 BB - The Braves brought Mejia back into the fold after a year in the Royals organization to provide a veteran presence in the midddle of their AA lineup, and he's certainly provided it, hitting .309 with a .907 OPS, 13 homers, and 54 RBI. He turned things up a notch this week, hitting .461 with a .808 slugging percentage and a 1.341 OPS.

Honorable Mention: Gwinnett Braves: Jairo Asencio, Cristhian Martinez, Chris Carter, Stefan Gartrell, Erik Cordier, Julio Teheran; Mississippi Braves: Donell Linares, Brett Oberholtzer, Cory Harrilchak; Lynchburg Hillcats: David Hale, Zeke Spruill, Phil Gosselin, Joe Tersoslavich; Rome Braves: Gus Schlosser, Caleb Brewer, Willie Kempf, Chris Garcia, Aaron Northcraft; Danville Braves: Lucas La Point, GCL Braves: Jean Carlos Gil, Frank Lafreniere

Who's Not?

  1. Joe Leonard 3B, Lynchburg Hillcats - 0-20, 4 K - It's been a disappointing year for Leonard, as he's hit just .244 with a .692 OPS and things hit a low point this week as he took an 0-fer in 5 games.
  2. Matt Lipka SS, Rome Braves - 2-22, 3B, 4 BB, 3 K, 2 SB - After being the Braves first pick in the 2010 draft, Lipka had a fine year for the GCL team, hitting .302 with a .357 OBP, .758 OPS and 20 steals, so there was plenty of excitement for him coming in to 2011. Unfortunately, it's been a long, frustrating year for the 19 year old, as he's hit just .230 with a .288 OBP and a .556 OPS. His numbers have gotten worse from month to month, as his averages have gone from .273 to .239 to .221 to .114, and his OPSs have gone from .620 to .588 to .517 to .396.
  3. David Filak RHP, Danville Braves - 0-1, 8.2 IP, 9 ER, 16 H, 2 BB, 8 K - Like Lipka, Filak showed potential in 2010, only to falter in 2011. After starting the year by putting up a 7.54 ERA and a 1.96 WHIP for Rome, things have actually gotten worse at Danville, where he's put up a 9.72 ERA and a 2.04 WHIP.
  4. Paul Clemens RHP, Mississippi Braves - 0-1, 4.1 IP, 9 R, 8 ER, 9 H, 2 BB, 5 K - Unlike the other players on the Not Hot? list, Clemens is actually having a nice season, with a 3.90 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP, but he got knocked around in his lone start of the week, allowing 9 runs, 8 earned, without making it through 5 innings. Unfortunately, that's the way his season has been trending, because after putting up a 2.07 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in April and May, he's posted a 7.14 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP since.

Dishonorable Mention: Gwinnett Braves: Mauro Gomez, Mike Minor, Diory Hernandez, Jose Constanza, Dustin Ricardson; Mississippi Braves: Kenshin Kawakami, Myke Jones; Lynchburg Hillcats: Chris Masters, Christian Bethancourt; Rome Braves: Evan Gattis, David Rohm; Danville Braves: Nick Ahmed

Time to promote Pastornicky?

See if we can get him hitting at AAA, and then maybe he’ll be ready to try out for the SS job in spring training next year. It would be great if we could accelerate his timeline enough so that we didn’t have to re-sign A-Gon next year.

Even with Pastornicky being promoted, I’d still rather sign A-Gon or another veteran SS for next season…Pastornicky is not Freeman, Heyward, etc., and should not just be handed a starting job out of AAA (unless you’re looking @ 2013). If he hacks it in ST, he’ll get some playing time and could contend for the job as the season progresses. If not, the team will still have someone serviceable to fill the slot.

Sea Bass is making bench money to start right now, anyway, so I don’t see why signing him or another SS to that salary is going to cause a financial crisis.

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?

I could see a situation similar to Schafer two years ago...

where his primary competition wasn’t really a proven MLB vet on the downside of a career ala Sea Bass, but more AAAA players who had tools but never had a chance and were given the chance to show they could or couldn’t make it (like Blanco, Josh Anderson, etc).

William Beckwith

Both Baseball Reference and the Danville Braves site have him at 6’2", 220 lbs, bats R / throws L. But since the photo shows him wearing a 1B mitt on his left hand, I’m thinking either he throws R or the photo is not him. Odd.

He bats left and throws right.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t fact check that, but I’m pretty sure it’s right.

Thomas LaStella

deserves honorable mention. His triple slash line for 10 July games is .333/.405/.528. He’s doing that at Rome not Danville.

What is the definition of a "prospect"?

Should someone like Mejia (or even Kawakami) be on a list like this? Mejia is more Minor League vet than a true “prospect”…

by theatlfan on Jul 11, 2011 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

Depends on if this is exclusively a prospect hot sheet

or one for the minors as a whole.

Exactly. It’s a Minor League Hot Sheet, not a Prospect Hot Sheet. I definitely try to pick actual prospects for the top spots, but sometimes a guy like Mejia has a week you can’t ignore. Chris Carter was very worthy of one of those top 4 spots.
