Gartrell Homers Twice, Delgado Is Great, And Salcedo Hits A Triple Double To Highlight Sunday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action
Stefan Gartrell hit a pair of homers, and his Gwinnett teammates Chris Carter and Mauro Gomez homered as well, Randall Delgado was great for Mississippi, and Edward Salcedo had a 3 double day for Rome.
Gwinnett Braves 6, Charlotte Knights 4
- Martin Prado 3B 0-5, .176 AVG
- Stefan Gartrell RF 2-2, 2 HR (17, 18), 2 BB, .272 AVG
- Chris Carter DH 1-4, HR (14), 2 RBI, .282 AVG
- Mauro Gomez 1B 2-4, HR (15), RBI, .287 AVG
- Ruben Gotay 2B 2-4, SB (2), .239 AVG
- Ed Lucas LF 2-4, .217 AVG
- Todd Redmond 5.1 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 3 K, W (6), 3.25 ERA
- Jaye Chapman 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K, SV (1), 2.53 ERA
Stefan Gartrell had a nice warmup for the AAA Home Run Derby by clubbing out his 17th and 18th homers of the season. Mauro Gomez is also taking part in the AAA Derby, and he also knocked himself a round tripper today. Chris Carter won't be in the derby, or even the All-Star game, but that didn't stop him from also hitting a homer. Todd Redmond didn't have the best start, allowing 3 runs over 5.1 innings, but he still picked up his 3rd win of the year. Jaye Chapman picked up his first AAA save with a scoreless 9th inning.
Gwinnett will be off for 3 days for the All-Star break before beginning the second half at home on Thursday against Norfolk.
Mississippi Braves 4, Mobile Bay Bears 6
- Tyler Pastornicky SS 2-5, .302 AVG
- Willie Cabrera LF 2-5, .281 AVG
- Ernesto Mejia 1B 2-4, 2B, .309 AVG
- Randall Delgado 7 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 8 K, 3.50 ERA
Randall Delgado was good in this one, limiting the Bay Bears to 1 run over 7 innings while striking out 8. Unfortunately, the bullpen blew it for him, as Jose Lugo and JJ Hoover combined to allow 5 runs in the 8th inning. Tyler Pastornicky extended his hitting streak to 7 games, his thirds straight 2 hit game. Willie Cabrera extended his own hitting streak to 4 games, and he's gone 6-15 in that span.
The M-Braves and the Bay Bears face off on Monday in the series finale.
Lynchburg Hillcats 0, Potomac Nationals 2
- Andrelton Simmons SS 2-4, .302 AVG
- Christian Bethancourt DH 2-4, .222 AVG
- Blaine Sims 6 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 5 K, 3.08 ERA
- Andrew Russell 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 6.54 ERA
- Andrew Wilson 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 3.00 ERA
Andrelton Simmons had his second straight 2 hit day, and is 5-13 over his last 3 games. Christian Bethancourt snapped an 0-16 skid with a 2 hit day. Blaine Sims was credited with the tough luck loss, allowing 2 runs, only 1 earned, over 6 innings. Andrew Wilson struck out 2 over a scoreless inning, and over his last 6 appearances he has a 1.50 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP.
Aaron Schafer will face the P-Nats tomorrow.
Rome Braves 5, Greenville Drive 8
- Edward Salcedo 3B 3-4, 3 2B, RBI, .270 AVG
- Chris Garcia 1B 2-3, RBI, BB, .343 AVG
- David Rohm RF 2-4, 3B, .264 AVG
- Aaron Northcraft 5 IP, 3 R, 1 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 2.79 ERA
Edward Salcedo had a great afternoon, rapping out 3 doubles, and Chris Garcia reached base 3 times with a pair of singles and a walk. David Rohm broke and 0-13 slump with a 2 hit day, including his 6th triple of the season. Aaron Northcraft picked up the tough luck loss, allowing 3 runs, but only 1 earned, over 5 innings. His catcher, Evan Gattis, was charged with an error on a dropped pop fly hit by Xander Bogaerts, and Bogaerts hit Northcrafts next pitch for a 2 run homer.
The team is off on Monday before heading to Kannapolis Tuesday where Caleb Brewer will take on the Intimidators.
Danville Braves 6, Bluefield Blue Jays 2
- Elmer Reyes SS 2-4, RBI, BB, .313 AVG
- Brandon Drury 2B 3-5, 2B, 2 RBI, .333 AVg
- Greg Ross 5 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 K, 2.93 ERA
- JR Graham 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 1.17 ERA
Brandon Drury had a 3 hit day, doubling and driving in a pair of runs, and he also played second base for the second time this year. After a poor showing with Rome this year, where he hit just .178 with a pathetic .474 OPS in 230 at bats, Elmer Reyes has gotten back on track withh Danville, hitting .313 with a .848 OPS through 48 at bats. Greg Ross had a solid start, allowing 2 runs over 5 innings while striking out 6, and the 18th round selection has had a nice pro debut, with a 2.93 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts in 15.1 innings. This year's 4th round pick, JR Graham, is also off to a good start, with a 1.17 ERA, though his 1.56 WHIP is a little bloated, but his 3 inning scorless appearance today certainly helped that.

I usually don’t pay much attention to the minor league happenings here on TC but I like the fact we are updated on our farm system. I don’t know if cbwilk does them all (I seem to remember yodaime [excuse the spelling] mentioning that he/she did/does the minor league recaps too) but good work!
I also have a question. If Gartrell plays RF, if and when he gets the call up to The Bigs, will he move to LF or CF? I mean, he has (potentially) one of the greatest OF’ers to play the game blocking his promotion to RF. Or is Gartrell a trade chip?

Is he going to be playing with the M-Braves tomorrow? It might get us a chance to possibly see the left side of our 2013 infield playing together…
Sounds like he’s going to take two days off before playing Wednesday and Thursday before returning to Atlanta for Friday’s series.

Alright, I'm on the wagon
Start the Pastronicky for SS in 2012 campaign!
Spend our money on a LF bat (I’m still assuming chip retires), figure out if Schafer is our longterm solution in CF, upgrade the pen, and deal some pitching to get some position prospects in the system.

Two knee surgeries in less than a year
And he’s not getting any younger and just going to have more problems.
So I'm expecting a Pastornicky promotion anyday now
Also, side note: Yunel batting .292/.368/.441 with 9 HR’s at the break.
Would’ve been nice if he could’ve gotten his attitude together last year…

It seems so. He’s been pitching out of the pen for a few weeks now.

yea im not to happy about that
its like they know they dont have room for him in a future rotation so they are trying to find somewhere to maximize his value. I feel the best thing to do would to have been to let him finish dominating the minors as a starter and trade him if he isn’t in the teams future plans.

As Braves fans we’ve overvalued hi . As a trade chip he would have worked as one of those fill out the end of a 5 player deal type guys.

Gartrell
FREE GARTRELL! Did Brooks ever have this much power in a season?
by PhuckthePhillies on Jul 11, 2011 12:31 AM EDT reply actions
I agree
Gartrell atleast deserves a shot, lugo is our super utility, and we all know what Hicks has to offer. Lets give the man atleast a couple of atbats to see what he can do.
Also, I’m officially starting the Free Chapman campaign, so Free Chapman haha
Oh and one other side note, Release Proctor! Watching him pitch is worse than having a rectal exam or that thing where the shove the tube up…well you know…

Yeah, Brooks did actually. In AAA in 2006 he had a .534 slugging percentage, which is right in line with Gartrell’s .533 slugging percentage this year. Of course, Brooks was doing it in the PCL, where it’s much easier to hit.

Don't mind
I don’t mind them converting Hoover to a reliever. We’ve got a stock pile of starters and we’ve seen how much value there is in quality in the pen. I’d rather them utilize him rather than have him in a holding pattern in the minors. As far as trade value is concerned I think it only helps his stock because it shows he can do more than just start.
