Simmons Extends Hitting Streak To 10 While Homers By Gomez, Hicks, And Bowman Power A Redmond Victory To Highlight Wednesday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action
Andrelton Simmons extended his hitting streak to 10 games, the Gwinnett offense powered out 10 runs to help Todd Redmond's Ace effort, and multi-hit games by Myke Jones, Tyler Pastornicky, and Willie Cabrera weren't enough to overcome Paul Clemens' worst start of the year.
Gwinnett Braves 10, Toledo Mud Hens 5
- Jose Constanza CF 3-5, RBI, .335 AVG
- Julio Lugo SS 2-5, 2 2B, RBI, .176 AVG
- Mauro Gomez 1B 2-5, 2B, HR (12), 3 RBI, .316 AVG
- Brandon Hicks 3B 3-5, 2B, HR (8), 2 RBI, .255 AVG
- Shawn Bowman DH 2-4, HR (8), 2 RBI, .263 AVG
- Todd Redmond 6 IP, 1 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 7 K, W (4), 2.81 ERA
Mauro Gomez led the potent G-Braves offense, driving in 3 runs with his 12th homer of the season. Brandon Hicks also homered, his 8th of the year, as part of a 3 hit game. He's flashing much more pop in AAA this year, he only hit 7 homers last season in 261 at bats while slugging just .333. This year his slugging is up to .528 in 106 at bats. Shawn Bowman also hit his 8th homer of the year, and the 26 year old Canadian is having a decent AAA debut season, hitting .263 with a .760 OPS. He is striking out in 30% of his at bats, but that's the same rate he's struck out at over his 9 year career. Todd Redmond had a great start, striking out 7 while allowing just 1 run over 6 innings. The 26 year old is in his third seasn of AAA and he's putting up his best year at the level, with a 2.81 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP.
Top prospect Julio Teheran takes on the Mud Hens Thursday.
Mississippi Braves 5, Montgomery Biscuits 10
- Myke Jones CF 2-5, RBI, .263 AVG
- Tyler Pastornicky SS 3-5, E (16), .309 AVG
- Willie Cabrera LF 3-5, 2B, RBI, E (2), .263 AVG
- Cory Harrilchak RF 2-4, HR (3), RBI, .211 AVG
- Paul Clemens 3.2 IP, 10 R, 7 ER, 11 H, 1 BB, 5 K, 3.36 ERA
- Yeliar Castro 2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 3 K, 3.54 ERA
Paul Clemens got hammered in this one, allowing 10 runs, 7 earned, and he's hit a real rough patch, allowing 12 earned runs in 9 innings over his last 2 starts, allowing 21 hits in the process. On the bright side, in those 2 starts he has struck out 10 and walked only 2. Myke Jones rapped out a pair of hits and drove in a run. He's getting the job done as a leadoff hitter, with a .407 OBP. Tyler Pastornicky had a 3 hit night, though he did make his 16th error of the season. Most of them seem to be throwing errors, and without seeing the games in person it's hard to know if he's just making terrible throws of if it's more a case of making throws that he shouldn't, which is something most young shortstops do. Willie Cabrera is getting his groove back, with a 3 hit day to extend his hitting streak to 4 games. Cory Harrilchak has had a rough season, but hopefully he's turning things around, hitting .240 in June with a .696 OPS, wich is an improvement over his .211 average and .635 OPS on the season.
Arodys Vizcaino takes the mound Thursday night as the team heads home. It's Bobby Cox night at Trustman Park, so if you're in the area head out and watch the pre-game ceremony.
Lynchburg Hillcats 1, Salem Red Sox 6
- Todd Cunningham CF 2-4, .279 AVG
- Andrelton Simmons SS 1-4, 2B, RBI, .315 AVG
- Willie Kempf 4.1 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 3 B, 5 K, 6.75 ERA
- Eliecer Cardenas 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 K, 0.84 ERA
Andrelton Simmons drove in the only Hillcat run of the game with a double, his third double in his last 4 games, extending his hitting streak to 10 games. In that span he's hitting .333 with a .763 OPS. Todd Cunningham had 2 singles, extending his hitting streak to 5 games. He's gone 7-19 with a homer and 2 walks in that span. Walks prevented Wilie Kempf from being able to get out of the 5th inning, though he only gave up 3 runs, 2 earned. Eliecer Cardenas dominated for the last 2 innings of the game, striking out 4 while shutting out the Red Sox. He's had no luck in AA, with a 27.00 ERA and a 7.00 WHIP in 3 innings for Mississippi, but he's dominated High A, with a 0.84 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP, and 11.4 K/9 in 21.1 innings for Lynchburg.
Chris Masters will start the series finale Thursday.
Rome Braves - Off
Aaron Northcraft will pitch the series opener against the Greenville Drive Thursday.
DSL Braves - Score Unreported
It's possible this game was rained out like yesterday. It's possible it was played and the box score wasn't given to the right person. It's possible that the Dominican Summer League Braves are an elaborate hoax.

I’m hoping Pastornicky gets a cup of coffee at the end of the season. Not a knock on Diory, but we really wouldn’t be losing much by sending him down in favor of getting Pastornicky a few ABs.
I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was. - Muhammad Ali
How do I feel? Like f**king sucess - Jordan Schafer
Hoping Hicks gets the same
He’s showing in AAA that the progress we saw in ST might actually be for real. He’s got a slick glove and some speed so if he can show an even average bat, then he should have some value.
What Diory have done in the last couple of weeks
the way he is getting pinch hits and that pinch homer in NY, he has shown very capable to be a good backup infielder for us. With us expecting to be in contention, Diory is by far who I want to have on my bench over Hicks (solid glove and base running but I haven’t seen enough hits from him) or an unknown such as Pastornicky (of course, in September with the extended roster, we might see him…but that would require putting him on the 40-men roster)

If a DSL game gets cancelled...
and no one is there to see it…was it ever really there?

Is Redmond really only 26?
Seems like we’ve had him forever… kind of a shame that he’s been as solid as he has for Gwinnett and he never even got a cup of coffee with us.
maybe one day he can be a starter elsewhere
or long relief here, but he has no shot in this stacked farm
I pray to Jason Heyward every night

The Biscuits are really buttering us up this season.
Has Northcraft pitched yet for Rome or is this his first appearance?
I'm ashamed of what I've done for a Klondike bar.
Pastronicky
He’s just making terrible throws. Its not the case of him making throws that he shouldn’t. Also Eduardo Mejica has not done a good job of digging them out.
I'm a king, no matter how the cards are dealt.
I’m no scout, but what I saw of him in the AFL, it didn’t look like he had the arm for SS. I said back then that he’d probably be better at 2B.
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

It’s Ernesto Mejia. I feel like you got him mixed up with Eduardo Mujica, the pitcher. But that’s good to know. I agree with king of games, I’m not sure he has the arm for short. But I do think he can play well enough to stick there.

Yeah. Ernesto i meant
Or as the Biscuit fan was calling him at the game monday, Me-Me
I'm a king, no matter how the cards are dealt.
I got to see him play some 2B there as well, and he actually looked above average there. But I agree, he’s fully capable of playing SS as long as you’re not looking for amazing Gonzalez-type plays.
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

Speaking of the AFL
Any idea which Braves players are likely to head out here this year?

It’s way too early to know. I could make some guesses, and might even get a few right, but it would be complete and total speculation at this point.

If healthy Milligan seems kind of obvious...
and the same goes for Vizcaino (meaning if healthy). I’d think Simmons would be a good choice to see if his bat is really what it’s looked like in Lynchburg. Was Oberholtzer out there last year?

The Favorite Son of Mundo-Nobo (Netherlands Antilles), Andrelton Simmons
has now at .315/ .353/ .380/ .734 after 235 PA. I would think the Braves would want to see what he can do at the AA level pretty soon.
I would assume some organizational reshifting...
once Danville and the GCL get started up. I’m hoping Andrelton hits enough in AA to keep his positional train rolling. Dude is skinny as a rail, you’ve got to figure a few years of a professional workout regimen will help him slug a few more XBHs.

He’s almost comically skinny right now.
