Salcedo Drives In Four, Bethancout Stays Hot, and Cordier Dominates To Highlight Tuesday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action

Edward Salcedo drove in 4 of Rome's 5 runs.

Edward Salcedo drove in 4 runs and Christian Bethancourt rapped out 2 doubles, while Erik Cordier tossed 7 shutout innings and Adam Milligan clubbed out his 9th homer of the year.

Gwinnett Braves 4, Toldedo Mud Hens 1

  • Jose Constanza CF 4-5, 3B, HR (1), 2 RBI, .328 AVG
  • Shawn Bowman 3B 2-4, .258 AVG
  • Erik Cordier 7 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 K, W (1), 1.62 ERA
  • Jairo Asencio 1.1 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 3 K, SV (7), 1.80 ERA

Erik Cordier's career has been defined more by the innings he hasn't pitched than the ones he has, but hopefully he's in the process of turning that trend around. The 25 year old had a fantastic start tonight, shutting out the Mud Hens over 7 innings while picking up 5 strikeouts. In 3 starts for Gwinnett he has a 1.62 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP. He's a member of Atlanta's 40 man roster, and he can push his fastbll into the mid 90s with easy, so he could find himself in the Majors at some point this year, either working as a spot starter or out of the bullpen. Jose Constanza ad a 4 hit day, including his first homer of the season. It was his first AAA homer, in over 600 plate appearances, and just his 6th career homer, in almost 3,000 career plate appearances. Still, the Braves aren't expecting an pop from him and his .366 OBP and 12 steals this year have been a boon to the G-Braves offense.

Todd Redmond takes the mound Wednesday.

Mississippi Braves 4, Montgomery Biscuits 7

  • Marcus Lemon 2B-RF 2-3, 2 3B, E (3), .234 AVG
  • Antoan Richardson LF 4-4, 2B, 3 RBI, .366 AVG
  • JJ Hoover 2 IP, 6 R, 4 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 1 K, 3.07 ERA
  • Rowdy Hardy 2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 1.93 ERA
  • Billy Bullock 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K, 6.45 ERA

JJ Hoover had his worst AA start of the year, lasting just 2 innings and giving up 6 runs, 4 earned. Aside from his poor showing in 2 AAA starts, Hoover had been consistent al year, so tonight was likely just an off night, which happens to everyone now and then. Billy Bullock tossed a perfect inning, a nice comeback after allowing 4 runs in 1.2 innings his last time out. He's had stretches of dominance punctuated by the occasional terrible performance. Still, he's striking out 13.3 batters per 9 innings. It's rare to hit a triple, so it's even more impressive that Marcus Lemon hit 2 tonight, his first of the year. With Willie Cabrera's demotion from AAA and Myke Jones' return from injury and suspension, Antoan Richardson has seen his playing time nearly disappear, but he's made the most of the opportunities he's gotten, hitting .336 with a .493 OBP and a .848 OPS in 107 at bats.

The M-Braves will look for the series win Wednesday with Paul Clemens making the start.

Lynchburg Hillcats 8, Salem Red Sox 5

  • Todd Cunningham CF 2-4, HR (3), RBI, BB, .275 AVG
  • Andrelton Simmons SS 2-5, 2B, 2 RBI, .316 AVG
  • Barrett Kleinknecht 2B 3-5, .292 AVG
  • Adam Milligan DH 3-5, HR (9), 2 RBI, .287 AVG
  • Gerry Rodriguez 1B 2-4, 2B, E (2), .296 AVG
  • Braeden Schlehuber C 2-3, 2B, E (3), .266 AVG
  • Zeke Spruill 5 IP, 4 ER, 10 H, 2 BB, 1 K, W (4), 4.14 ERA
  • Ryan Buchter 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K, SV (2), 1.23 ERA

The Hillcats pounded out 16 hits and plated 8 runs, backing Zeke Spruill, who wasn't overly effective, but was good enough to pick up his 4th win of the year. Ryan Buchter loaded the bases in the 9th, but he managed to strike out the side to pick up his 2nd save. Adam Milligan led the offense with 3 hits, including his 9th home run. He's loving June, with a .345 average and 1.061 OPS in 7 games. Todd Cunningham also homered, his 3rd of the year, extending his hitting streak to 4 games. Barrett Kleinknecht had 3 singles and showed his versatility by playing second base for the first time this year. This season he's also played 27 games at first, 24 at third, and 2 at shortstop. Andrelton Simmons had 2 hits, including a double, extending his hittng streak to 9 games.

Willie Kempf will take on Salem tomorrow.

Rome Braves 5, Kannapolis Intimidators 2

  • Christian Bethancourt C 2-3, 2 2B, RBI, BB, .286 AVG
  • Edward Salcedo 3B 3-4, 2B, 3B, 4 RBI, .274 AVG
  • Dan Jurik 4 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 2 K, 2.08 ERA
  • Matt Suschak 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K, W (2), 6.63 ERA
  • Tyler Hess 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K, SV (5), 3.66 ERA

Edward Salcedo drove in 3 runs on a 5th inning triple and another on a 8th inning double. The 19 year old has been relatively consistent at the plate all year, but he's hot of late, with a .308 average and a 1.013 OPS in his last 10 games. Christian Bethancourt has been even hotter. After a 2 double day, the 19 year old is hitting .405 with a 1.218 OPS in his last 10 games. After putting up a 3.45 ERA and a 1.53 ERA in 15.2 innings for Lynchburg, Dan Jurik was sent to Rome to take the rotation spot opened when the team sent David Filak back to Extended Spring Training in anticipation of Danville's season starting in a few weeks. Jurik had a solid return to the SAL, allowing 2 runs in 4 innings. Matt Suschak was great in relief of him, throwing 3 scoreless while striking out 4. Tyler Hess followed with 2 perfect innings for his 5th save of the year, all of them coming in his last 9 appearances.

Rome is off tomorrow before heading home to begin a series against the Greenville Drive Thursday.

DSL Braves - Postponed

The tropics tend to get hit with a lot of stormes, leading to a ton of rainouts in the DSL season. The Braves will take on the Angels tomorrow.

Is Matt Lipka injured?

Haven’t seen him in the past few boxscores for Rome…

by TBuzz on Jun 8, 2011 7:43 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Yeah, he didn’t play the whole series in Kannapolis. I was there the first two games and he wasn’t working out in BP either. He didn’t look hurt but he must have something nagging on him. Even if he was just getting some rest he’d at least work out pregame.

If Chipper retires after next season

Would Milligan be ready to step into LF? Or is he not good enough on defense?

If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

His defense is fine, especially for LF. It’d be nice if he was ready to move into the Majors in 2013. I’d like to see him get moved up to Mississippi later this summer and see how he does. He’s going to have to watch the strikeouts, but he’s definitely a guy who hammers the ball when he hits it.

I think right now he’s out best outfield prospect. I don’t know if that will make him our best option or not, but he’s the best of a somewhat suspect Minor League outfield group.

If we don't trade/sign someone...

unless Chipper is back keeping Prado in LF, I’d almost guarantee we sign someone. And unless Schafer can regain his hot touch, we may sign someone anyway since that would make CF a huge need.

Or we win a ring

although it should be said that “unless he gets hurt” is a foregone conclusion, so I’d make it hurt significantly, and agree. Barring the WS winning that could let him leave on a high note.

I’d say the WS makes it 50/50. If he feels like he can still contribute, he’d probably come back for another go.

I actually realized later that Myke Jones might actually be the team’s best OF prospect. Kind of a preference thing. I might go either way depending on the day.

Best in terms of upside...

the argument could be made I guess. In terms of readiness for the bigs, I’d think Jones is WAY ahead of Milligan there with Milligan’s lack of experience due to missing last year and the need to work on his approach (BB/K stuff).

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 8, 2011 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Very true about readiness, but for me that rarely comes into how I value a prospect in comparison to another.

Agreed...

just speaking in terms of king of games question re an OF spot for next year should we need them, or fail to sign/trade for someone to fill the voids out there.

http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 8, 2011 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

And no disrespect to Jones, cause I do like him

and have for a while (my Chone Figgins comp is old, and I’ve always been a fan of Leary, GA born utility man). But that he could arguably be our top OF prospect is not a good thing in my mind. I’d like at least someone in the pipes with a lot more upside. Maybe a raw kid like Hector Garcia gives us that lottery ticket type cause I’m not bully on Milligan with his BB/K issues.

http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 8, 2011 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s still pretty questionable. I mean, he’s actually older than Cody Johnson, and he’s still in high A, and facing kind of the same situation. Great power, walks a lot, but strikes out a ton. Cody Johnson we let loose after he just couldn’t get it done at AA. Milligan is doing really well at high A, but he’s 23 years old, a bit old for the level. He’s been hurt some, which explains why he’s still where he is, but the issue is that he’s going to need to demonstrate his ability to hit at AA before he’s legitimate.

Do you see Mycal Jones as a true OF prospect, or is he more of a superutility?

My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.

And just cause I was curious...

our former 1st round pick is with the Yankees AA club in Trenton. He’s still showing good pop, but has a slash line of .229/.272/.453 in 48 games and over 200 plate appearances.

http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 8, 2011 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Myke could be the long term answer in center field. I think he could easily break in as a utility guy cause he absolutely has the ability to play around the field, but he has the speed and instincts to play center and he’s got enough potential with the bat to make him an impact player out there.

Yeah, I’m not saying Milligan is a can’t miss guy or anything, and he’s definitely too old for the league, but his injuries account for that, which is why I’d like to see him move up and do something at AA. I like Adam’s approach and I like his size, I really want to see him do well.

FIGGINS! FIGGINS! FIGGINS! FIGGINS!

and if he wasn’t hurt last year, I’d bet Milligan would have already been in AA and probably gotten a taste last year after CoJo was cut loose.

And just to add to my comp...

Figgins got his first consistent taste in CF when Erstad went down in 03. And then bounced around 04 before settling in at 3B when their injury prone slugger (more similarities?) Troy Glaus went down.

with the progression of most of our milb players

its just another great testimate to what a quality staff we have all up and down this organization. Damn I love being a Braves Fan! With all this being said, whoever we draft in either the early rounds or the latter I’m sure our coaches will be able to get the most out of their talent, and prepare them for life, guide them in their transitions to adulthood, and prepare them for their own respective roads to the big leagues!

Want to say, is any one else a huge Antoan Richardson fan?

Kid deserves a AAA call, as he’s done nothing but produce and produce big time since being signed last year as a minor league free agent. he’s one of my favorite names to see in these recaps, and I hope we give him the look he’s earning on the field. His obp was well above .390 last year in AA and a short stint with Gwinnett last year. It’s an unreal .493 this year (every other time he’s up, he’s on, and with his speed that’s certainly dangerous for the opposition). Screw Matt Young. FREE ANTOAN RICHARDSON!

http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 8, 2011 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

Antoan is an incredibly likeable guy. He’s a little sparkplug. It would be nice to see him get a chance at AAA, but really he’s doing just what the team needs him to do, be around when they need a guy to fill in.

His obp is insane though, damn near 50%?!?!

imo, he’s done more to warrant a spot with Gwinnett than say Fiorentino, and those two could easily switch places, again imo.

http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/

by Mr. Sanchez on Jun 8, 2011 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

The difference is, Fio has played at AAA a lot before, and in the Majors, and he’s a better outfielder with the ability to play RF. He’s just a more reasonable guy to have in AAA as a backup, cause he could be a viable backup in the Majors if you needed him.

Not disagreeing with what you say...

but his numbers have been less than stellar, while Richardson’s been top notch and was so last year. Reward the guy who’s been with you longer, and been more productive for you, by giving him a taste while Schafer’s up with the big boys. If he struggles, he can go back to AA. But we may have just found a little lightning in a bottle in a guy who’s seeing the ball well right now and has speed to burn. Fiorentino is just underwhelming, with a .189/.250/.351 line for AAA and a worse than Richardson, .238/.347/.405 line in Pearl.

Ok, but really that’s not going to happen. In AA you’ve got prospects in Jones and Harrilchak, and a guy who’s been a proven player for you in AA for a few years in Cabrera. He can get at bats at DH (or with one of those guys playing DH), but the Southern League is mostly NL teams, so there aren’t a lot of opportunities there. In AAA you’ve got a guy on the 40 man, Gartrell, a former top 100 prospect who still has upside, Ramirez, and a guy whose AAA contract says he plays every day, Constanza. He could get DH at bats there, but they always seem to have it filled with the extra infielders. Add in that he’s older than most of the guys he’s going against, and it’s easy to see why Richardson isn’t getting many at bats.

IMO post season he should shoot up our prospect board.. plus plus D with finally a good bat?
