Tomahawk Chops: Daily Atlanta Braves Clippings For Monday, June 6th

Your one-page daily morning overview of Atlanta Braves news:

Postgame quotes following Sunday night’s loss to the Mets | Atlanta Braves
Brian McCann on offensive stretch: "It’ll come around. We’ve just got to stay the course. It’s such a long season. You go through times where you know you’re hot and you go through times when you’re cold, and you’ve got to squeak out wins when things aren’t going your way. And I think we’ve done that. We’re not playing our best baseball right now, but we’re getting a win here and there and we’re staying close. We’re still right there. We’re (3 ½ games) back in the division, and right there in the wild card, so I don’t think we need to panic about anything. Teams go through highs and teams go through lows. You’ve just got to kind of ride them both out."

Schafer returns to lineup; Heyward, McLouth, Minor updates | Atlanta Braves
"It’s sore but nothing that’s going to bother me with anything," said Schafer, who still had a little bit of swelling and a black eye. "I can see fine and everything else is good."

Gonzalez looking forward to Miami trip | braves.com: News
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez enjoyed his first Major League managerial experience while surrounded by friends and family members in his native Miami. But he could have done without some of the second-guessing he experienced, like when his aunt called to ask why he was using Jorge Julio so frequently.

Trio of Braves rehabbing in Florida | braves.com: News
While their Braves teammates are in the midst of a 10-game road trip, Jason Heyward, Nate McLouth and Kris Medlen are at the club's Spring Training complex attempting to rehab their respective injuries to move closer to returning to action.

Medlen suffers minor setback in elbow recovery  | ajc.com
Braves pitcher Kris Medlen suffered the first setback of his recovery from elbow reconstruction surgery last week -- and a big scare -- but realized soon after he was going through the typical process of having scar tissue break up.

Braves to catchers: Stay off your knees | The News & Advance
When Joe Breeden, the Atlanta Braves’ roving minor-league catching instructor, first talks to the organization’s young catchers, he makes sure to drill home one key point: Don’t go to your knees.

Scout.com: 2011 Braves Draft Preview
Now, as the Braves look toward the June amateur draft this week, they will be able to have a better mixture of pitchers and position players. And it’s even possible, with the strength of the draft being pitchers, they can go back to focusing on the part of the game that has been the staple of its success for more than 25 years.

Medlen

For goodness sake, don’t rush Medlen back. We’re the best pitching staff in MLB, the last thing we need to do is risk another 12 months of rehabbing bevause we tried to get him back a month early.

Bill Shanks using Chief Noc-a-homa...

Nice!

I doubt we take a position player within the first 3 rounds. What I would like to see…

1) Big-potential HS arms that we can develop over a few years and fill the void of our current top prospects. LH pitchers would be nice as well.

2) Catchers…outside of Bethancourt as a prospect, we have a hodge-podge of mediocrity at the AA and AAA levels. God forbid if McCann gets hurt and Ross is long gone that we have to play a Jesus Sucre or sign/trade for someone.

3) Athletes…guys who can play a number of positions and show at least a few tools.

HUDDY quote from last night:

On this stretch:
"We’re not playing great baseball right now. We’re much better than what we’re showing out there right now, and I think it’s going to work itself out. We’ve just got to keep going out there, keep plugging along and try to do the little things to help us win and help us avoid some of the stooge moves out there, both on the mound and in the field."
Can’t argue.
But we need to add one area: Managerial decision-making. Of course HE won’t say that, but we can.
