The minor leagues returned to normalcy today with excellent pitching from some excellent pitching prospects. Mike Minor flirted with perfection and Randall Delgado faced off against another ace and his team came away with the win. The Hillcats and Rome didn't have much to show today with some poor pitching in Rome and not much offense for Lynchburg.
Buffalo Bisons 5, Gwinnett Braves 7
- Stefan Gartrell LF - 1-2, HR(12), 2 BB, .289 Avg
- Brandon Hicks SS - 2-4, 2 HR(7), 5 RBI, .250 Avg
- Mike Minor 8 IP, 1 H, 0R, 1 BB, 9 K, 2.23 ERA
Mike Minor was just plain filthy in this one. He had a perfect game going into the seventh inning before he issued a leadoff walk and then gave up a weak single. He pitched one more perfect inning and then called it a night on 99 pitches. I'll take it. Stefan Gartrell has five hits in the last two days and all of them have gone for extra bases (3 HR & 2 2B). Also I just want to admit that I did not realize how good a season Brandon Hicks was having at the plate. Sure he isn't hitting for average but his OPS is sitting at .844 in AAA and he is walking in around 11% of his plate appearances.
Yohan Flande will try to eliminate his struggles starting as he faces off against the Bisons.
Mississippi Braves 3, Montgomery Biscuits 2
- Mycal Jones CF - 0-3, 2 BB, .266 Avg
- Tyler Pastornicky SS - 2-4, RBI, CS(4), PO, .308 Avg
- Donell Linares 3B - 2-3, BB, .297 Avg
- Randall Delgado 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 3.51 ERA
In battle of top pitching prospects, Randall Delgado and the Braves bested Tampa Bay Rays top prospect Matt Moore. The Braves got to Moore early scoring one in both the second and third innings but didn't score again until the ninth. Delgado was tossing a shutout until he gave up an eighth inning lead-off homer and turned things over to Benino Pruneda who pitched two innings of one run ball. Also, Myke Jones hasn't had a hit in three games but he has been on base six times during that period because of his walks.
Brett Oberholtzer faces off against another top pitching prospect from Tampa Bay in Chris Archer.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans 5, Lynchburg Hillcats 3
- Joey Terdoslavich DH - 3-4, 2B, .280 Avg
Joey Terdoslavich continues to prove his mettle as a hitter with yet another extra base hit in his three hit performance tonight. In his last 10 games he is hitting .375 with eight extra base hits. For the year his OPS is up to .874 and in May he collected twelve walks after taking just two in 70 April at-bats.
Recently signed Aaron Shafer will make his first start for the Hillcats tomorrow.
Rome Braves 4, Kannapolis Intimidators 16
- Christian Bethancourt C - 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, K, CS(3), .279 Avg
- David Rohm RF - 1-2, 2B, 2 BB, .254 Avg
I would expect it is probably not going to be a good night when you have two pitchers scheduled who have ERAs over 6.00 coming into the game. After tonight both David Filak and Steven Kent have ERAs well over 7.00. In positive news Christian Bethancourt is still hitting the ball very well (.372 over his last 10 with three of his four homers on the season). He still is terrible at taking walks though he has shown solid contact skills with just 25 K in 180 AB.
Caleb Brewer will look to improve on his 3.14 ERA against Kannapolis tomorrow.
