Gwinnett's Offense Rolls Behind Matt Young While Rain Washes Out Two Atlanta Braves Minor League Games
Rain washed out two games today and a third team didn't play to begin with so I get an easy night. Gwinnett's offense was clicking on all cylinders and it still amazes me that this offense has performed so poorly this season. Rome held the opposition under ten runs in their contest but couldn't get more than three themselves.
Gwinnett Braves 9, Louisville Bats 4
- Matt Young CF - 2-3, 2B, 2 BB, PO, .310 Avg
- Ruben Gotay 2B - 2-5, 2 RBI, .222 Avg
- Chris Carter 1B - 2-3, RBI, BB, .278 Avg
- Wilkin Castillo C - 3-5, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 K, .267 Avg
- Brandon Hicks SS - 2-5, 2B, RBI, 2 K, .258 Avg
- Eric Cordier 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K, 3.65 ERA
- Juan Abreu 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 2.27 ERA
Gwinnett's offense knocked out 14 hits tonight and used a four run fifth inning to take the win from the Bats. Eric Cordier pitched a solid game with some nice relief help from Juan Abreu who pitched two perfect innings. Years ago when the Braves AAA team was in Richmond, long time farmhand Damon Hollins earned the nickname the "Mayor" because he spent parts of seven different seasons playing for the Braves. Matt Young is just in his third season for Gwinnett, but I get the feeling that he may reach Mayor status before all is said and done.
Todd Redmond will look to improve on his 3.21 ERA tomorrow.
Mississippi - Off Day
Kenshin Kawakami will make the start for the Braves tomorrow against the Stars.
Lynchburg Hillcats @ Winston-Salem Dash
This game was suspended in the first inning due to rain.
Savannah Sand Gnats 5, Rome Braves 3
- Edward Salcedo 3B - 1-4, SB(13), E(27), .275 Avg
- Evan Gattis DH - 1-4, HR(8), .336 Avg
- Kyle Rose CF - 2-2, SB(5), .232 Avg
- Willie Kempf 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K, 4.76 ERA
Edward Salcedo couldn't follow his big night up with another big night and that has been a theme with him. He started the year on a torrid pace but since then he hasn't really had any hot streaks. He will get his hits here and there and he has had a mini-slump here and there but for the most part he has been steadily mediocre since his hot streak. Hopefully last night's big game will spark something going forward.
Carlos Perez will try to stop the Braves four game losing streak.
Princeton Rays @ Danville Braves
This game was postponed due to rain and will be made up tomorrow as part of a double header.
GCL Braves 2, GCL Blue Jays 7
- Aris Alcantara 1B -1-1, 2 BB, .259 Avg
- Meng Tsai C - 2-4, 2B, 2 K, .500 Avg
- Frank Lafreniere 5 IP, 6 H, 5 R(3 ER), 2 BB, 5 K, 7.45 ERA
Offensively these two teams performed similarly for the game but the Blue Jays got two, two-run homers that put them up for good. As I said yesterday, Aris Alcantara has a pretty solid eye and he showed that off tonight taking two walks. Meng Tsai made his season debut today. He is a Taiwanese catcher the Braves signed in 2008. He spent over a year in Australia and then appeared in the GCL last season for all of four at bats. I don't know much about him outside of that but I cross my fingers for these Asian players because the Braves have had very little success in that market.
DSL Tigers @ DSL Braves
Not Reported.

could you possibly put a “*” or something next to the prospects that are newly drafted? I would definitely appreciate it!
I can’t speak for yodaime4, but I won’t be doing something like that when it’s my week to do the reports. These things already take an incredibly long time to put together. I’m sorry, but I just can’t put every piece of information on a player up there.
I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it:

while i don’t deny this takes a lot of time. I bet it surely does, but adding a star for newly drafted players cant take more then a minute or two. Its not like there will be a lot and they should be relatively grouped if you have to do any at all. Either way I don’t care, just pointing this out.
Well, if people want to start paying me for every extra minute or two I’d happily do it. Here’s an example, a year ago this would have been Matt Young’s line tonight:
M. Young 2-3, 2B, 2 BB
And here’s what it is now:
Matt Young CF – 2-3, 2B, 2 BB, PO, .310 Avg
So multiply the extra time it takes to mentally gather and type that extra information for each player and add it all up. Then add in putting the next day’s pitcher. Then add in the entire DSL team. Then add in that opening paragraph and the long drawn out title. Then add in making a twitter title.
That’s all the extra stuff that’s been added to this report over the last year. And factor in that yodaime4 and I are doing this sometime between 11pm and 3am. And then after doing that every day for a week we have to go through all the rosters and add up the stats for the week to figure out the Hot Sheet (something also added in the last year) because there isn’t a website that keeps the stats for just the last week. And then most of the time I like to add a picture I’ve taken just so people can get an idea of what some of these guys look like.
So yes, any one thing might only take a minute, but the whole process takes forever, and I hate to sound like a jerk, but I’m not adding anything to it unless gondeee orders me to.

Realize that we can’t even start writing these until 10 PM every night east coast time which is what I am on. It generally takes about an hour (assuming Mississippi is done by 11 most nights). I have to be at work (the job i get paid for) between 7 and 8 AM most days so I am looking at 1130 or midnight most nights when I can finish posting it. Yeah I’m not looking to add any more than I have to. When i write one of these I usually keep three tabs open so I can cycle between boxscores, writing the recap and any extra info (player bio and scouting reports, draft info etc.). Sometimes finding information on any of these players is kind of difficult. Like when I was looking for Meng Tsai last night all I could find for five minutes was stuff about a Chef who is apparently on tv.
I enjoy doing these immensely. Hell for those of you who have been around long enough you might remember that these things started because I was making a fanpost every night so people could see what was going on and Gondee moved them to main page. I did/do these because I don’t think there is another team specific site on the internet that covers the minors as comprehensively as talking chop does the Braves minor leagues and I am glad that CB and I can provide that to the Braves fans that come here. But hey I’ve got a life and wife (who is very understanding about me spending and hour or two a night writing to strangers on the internet) that I enjoy and I’m probably not going to start adding in stuff that is going to make an already tedious task a little more tedious.
I sprinkle diamonds on everything I eat because its the most baller sh*t you can do.
Yonda, cb...
just want to say your efforts are greatly appreciated. And while this may not make things better, your reports are what initially drew me in to the site, and I assume numerous others in addition to myself. It’s a thankless task, but here’s at least one sincere THANK YOU!

I’m not saying I don’t want to do them or don’t enjoy doing I just want people to know that its tedious work. I did this on my own before last season every day of the year (because minor leaguers play every night!) and it got tiresome. I am thankful for the support CB gives doing this on and off schedule. But thank you for the thank you sir!

I understand...
just wanted you to know the complainers are a small minority. Most of us make this the signature reason for coming here every morning, and (both of)your uncompensated efforts are greatly appreciated on this particular endeavor.
