Braves Offense, Jonny Venters Struggle In a 4-1 Loss To San Diego

After pounding out ten runs and twelve hits in Saturday's game, the Braves offense came crashing back to earth in the series finale as they mustered only one run and two hits.

Padres starter Cory Luebke was fantastic in his first start of the year. He only threw five innings and didn't factor into the decision, but he dominated Atlanta's lineup. Luebke struck out the side in the first inning on ten pitches, and struck out six total. He gave up only one hit and walked two in what was an impressive first start in 2011.

Tim Hudson wasn't nearly as sharp, but like Jair Jurrjens last night, managed to work his way out of trouble. Hudson allowed six hits and walked three, but struck out eight in six scoreless innings of work.

All of the scoring for both teams happened in the eighth inning. Atlanta struck first as Nate McLouth drew a one-out walk from Padres reliever Mike Adams. Eric Hinske then grounded to second base, but beat the throw to first on the attempted double play. Jordan Schafer followed with a double to right field that Will Venable bobbled as he attempted to make a throw. The double scored Hinske and gave Atlanta a short lived 1-0 lead.

The Braves called in Jonny Venters to pitch the bottom of the eighth, and he wasn't up to the task. Venters walked Chris Denorfia to start the inning. Cameron Maybin hit a chopper to the right of the mound, and Venters was too slow getting the ball to first base, allowing Maybin to reach and moving Denorfia to second.

Rob Johnson advanced the runners to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. The Braves loaded the bases on an intentional walk to Jesus Guzman for Will Venable, who popped a bunt up to Venters for the first out.

Venters reached out and deflected a groundball from Bartlett on the next play that would have gone right to Alex Gonzalez and end the inning. Instead, Bartlett reached on the play and Denorfia scored from third to tie the game at one. Back-to-back singles from Orlando Hudson and Chase Headley brought  in Maybin, Guzman, and Bartlett to give San Diego a 4-1 lead.

Heath Bell came in and closed the game out for his 20th save of the season. Mike Adams earned the win.

he is dragging our team down by the Offense...

apparently he doesn’t understand what the letters OBP stand for…or he doesn’t know how to teach plate discipline or correct a swing. So what the hell is he still here for…because he is “on time, and prepared everyday”.

I never though I would say this, but at this point I would love TP to come back and be our hitting coach.

The offense did good to score a run against one of the better relievers out there, and one run is often good enough with this bullpen. Venters just crapped the bed today.

Hard to ignore the first 7 innings though. Only 2 hits for the game isn’t going to cut it.

Let’s be honest. Nothing was too wrong with Venters in terms of pitching. He walked a guy, which he does occasionally. He failed to field a dribbler quickly, and then he tried to field a ball when Alex would’ve played it anyway. Meh.

We’ve been winning games like this when we bat like crap all season, so that we didn’t win this one didn’t bug me.

And I’ve given up on the Bobby Cox focus on winning series with this team because the Jekyll-and-Hyde offense smooths out over a 10-game stretch, not over a 3-game stretch.

by Ivan the Great on Jun 26, 2011 8:25 PM EDT reply actions

A Venters blowup was pretty much bound to happen eventually. It highlights the need to get another quality arm for the bullpen for the second half along with a bat that can actually hit LHP. I hope Wren has a plan. We’re going to need more than Ankiel & Farnsworth this year.

Venters, Kimbrel, O’Flathery, and Linebrink have been extremely overworked this year. Counting on career innings pitched from 4 guys is not smart. Proctor is not a quality arm and it would be very risky to put all the eggs in the basket counting on Moylan to be effective right when he comes off the dl. Bullpen is certainly a need. I’m not saying break the bank but people who thinks its fine haven’t looked closely at how much the bullpen has been worked this year.

Venters, Kimbrel, Linebrink, EOF – Horribly Overworked

Sherrill – Specialist that they obviously don’t feel comfortable using often

Martinez – Long inning relief that is rarely used when the game is tight unless he is the last option.

Gearin – Should be up over Proctor but hasn’t happened for some reason.

Moylan, Medlen, Marek – DL and can’t be counted on to come back to full effectiveness by the end of the season.

Teheran, Delgado – Not happening until Sept callups and who knows how they will be in relief.

Kawakami – LOL HAHA hope you were joking because a random fan would get used before him.

Again look at the list. We could use another quality arm in our extremely overworked bullpen.

Well not using as often or as long as the other 4 overworked guys, but yes you just helped proved the point that even Sherrill has been worked a lot. So we have 5 guys in the bullpen that have been worked heavily and you still think we shouldn’t get someone else to help out? Do you think using Proctor in more high leverage situation would be good BP management?

So, I guess when Prado comes back from the DL, we move Jordan back to AAA, but then, in order to get that extra BP arm, we send another position player back to AAA.

Otherwise, there is no room. It’s not a lack of arms that is causing the over-use. How can you not understand this?

Our bullpen has made 245 appearances, second only to the Marlins and pitched 251.1 innings, 3rd overall. Our starters have pitched 465 innings, good for 18th overall.

If there seems to be any reason that our BP is overworked (other than poor management of course) it is because our SP is not going deep into games.

Once the original rotation is back, I expect the staff to go deeper into games. Otherwise, your argument should not be for another quality BP arm to save the pen, but a quality starter.

The Over-Worked Bull Pen

Johnny Venters leads all MLB RPs with 48.1 IPs
Craig Kimbrel has 38.
Martinez has 35.2
EOF has 34.2
Linebrink has 31.1

Unless you want to go with a 8 or 9 man BP, there is no room to add more arms. Fredi is going to continue to use the same RPs, regardless of the game situation, and regardless of the amount of work that they have done and regardless of who else he has in the pen.

Adding another quality arm is not only necessary, it’s not even feasible. Who’s place would they take? Maybe Proctor, but we have guys in AAA right now that could take his spot, but the FO is not doing it. That should tell us that the FO wants Proctor in the pen.

Everyone else, I would argue, IS a quality arm, and short of paying top dollar in either money or prospects, it is not possible to bring in anyone better. Our guys are very, very, very good and very deep.

Do you know what happens when arms are overworked? They become less effective or get injured. You are projecting all these pitchers to maintain their quality at this pace while the opposite will almost certainly happen. You have to project what you will need not look at how well the bullpen is doing atm. If we stand pat our bullpen is very likely to break down and we’d be praying for moylan/medlen to save our bacon.

You just don’t get it, do you?

Nearly the ENTIRE BP is “over worked”. Bringing in another guy is not going to change how Fredi manages his bullpen.

We have some quality arms that are NOT being used. Bringing in another arm is not going to keep Fredi from using Venters.

He pitched Venters with a 5 run lead. A FIVE RUN LEAD! Do I even need to keep going with this?

If one got hurt

The other could go in at catcher. It would just necessitate the pitcher hitting, which would be no big deal, really.

If we had a DH in the National League (which I wish we did), we could give McCann plenty of days off from the grind of catching, like the Twins have historically done for Mauer.

Just no way I see Fredi actually doing this.

Nothing in his usage pattern of David Ross suggests that he would actually use him while Mac is in the game. Ross NEVER pinch hits, despite being basically our best RH bat. The " Oh, no, we might need a back-up catcher in the 16th inning" mentality is a real disservice to the team and to Ross, but it’s very firmly ingrained.

My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.

Old Man Jones will likely DH one game to give him some rest, and Tuesday against Pineda would probably be the best time to get Conrad into the game as Pineda throws hard and Brooksy is a good fastball hitter. I’d look for Hinske to likely DH one game as well.

I didn't get to watch the game because Dish network decided not to show it on HD despite the fact that they listed it

so when I DVRed it, it just showed 3 hours of HD “check back later screen”.

From the box score and from what I read, it seems the offense blew this game again because “once again” they could not score for 8 innings.

Jonny Venter’s arm is hanging by a thread and he is bound to be tired….but WTF is wrong with our offense again. I am sorry but at this point Parrish needs to go…his lack of experience is showing. We have a very talented line-up full of career professional hitters 1-7 and even Gonzalez isn’t that bad. There is no way that they would suck this bad for an entire 1/2 season on any other team. Isn’t our team OBP in the bottom 5 in MLB? Yeah, that is the hitting coaches fault…just like our pitching coach is due respect for continuously keeping our pitching staff one of the best in MLB.

Not hardly. Luckiest game of their lives. Venters is human. Etc.

David Ross has been sucking, of late. McCann’s presence is always missed, and he has already had a healthy dose of days off. Mac’s bat not being their kills us.

Our hitting (…..crickets…….) is suffering. Hell, at least last season we always had 2 guys on, or bases loaded, when we didn’t score the runs. Now, it’s just hard to watch, at times. Too on and off to work.

I still say we win the wild card when we get Prado back. I’m thinking we still have maybe a 2 game lead there.

We don't have bullpen or management issues

We have offensive issues. I’ve questioned some things Fredi has done this year, and like anyone, it’s frustrating to see our bullpen ever blow a game.

But Fredi, the bullpen, and the entire pitching staff are being put in terrible situations night after night by our inept offense. That’s the entire problem… the players who actually are doing their job on this team have ZERO margin for error. Fredi makes one bad decision or Venters has one bad inning at the very end of the game, and everyone seems to forget about the 20 horrible things our offense did leading up to that. My question in this game wasn’t “Why did Venters have a bad inning?”… It was “Why the hell can a group of professional hitters only manage 2 hits??”

Managers are going to have bad nights, as will relievers… even soon-to-be all stars like Venters. But as long as our batters continue to play like amateurs and rely on our pitchers to carry this team (which they’ve done an amazing job so far), they will ultimately be responsible for losses like this one.

By knows means do I disagree that Venters is overworked, and I hated seeing him pitch Saturday, but it’s pretty silly to blame that on his performance in this game. It’s not like the guy got shelled, he induced his usual grounders for the most part. A reliever giving up runs does not mean that he gave up the runs due to overwork, the guy’s numbers have been unfathomable up to this point.

Every pitcher is going to have a bad day once in a while. I’ll say the same thing I said after Kimbrel’s last meltdown: Go over video to make sure there’s no mechanical problem, give him a bit of rest, and he’ll be fine. As many others have pointed out, the fact that Venters was used unnecessarily in the Saturday game probably played into this.

Depends on how much he is used from right now til the All Star game.

I wouldn’t say he has been overused, considering his (usual) quick work, and/or, stuff. Everybody has a bad night. Even Johnny. It happens. He’ll get 3 quick outs the next time he comes out (hopefully not tomorrow) and tonight will be quickly forgotten. As will the Padres season.

It seems to mean something to him. And to be honest it would be pretty rare and would continue the tradition of deserving
Braves players getting unconventional spots (Omar Infante.) I really don’t think that an inning in the All-Star gave is going to change the trajectory of his season, especially with 5-6 days of rest surrounding it.

by GumpBrave on Jun 27, 2011 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure it surprised no one here that the Braves struggled against a random lefty

that’s really what lost us the game. I’m confident that Venters will be great next time out although there are definitely been signs lately that his control is slipping a bit (due to being tired?). Now it’s on to Seattle to face some actually pretty good pitchers. In this kind of crazy season, this is probably when our bats would break out.

I think Venters just had a normal “off” day. Yeah we could point at the work loaf but there is no way we could have expected him to stay so dominant the whole season.

Also it was perfectly logical for him to be used last night. When he was warming up the team was up 5-1 and Fredi wanted to make sure we won that game. With him already warmed up Fredi just went ahead and put him in the game instead of making someone else do a quick warm up and jump out there.

I see no fault of Fredi’s in this situation. If anything it shows how much we’ve needed another top notch arm in the pen. Someone that can help ease the work load now. Yea Moylan and Medlen should be back soon but that’s at least 6-8 weeks away. By that time his arm might have fallen off.

I hope Wren was talking to the Padres GM while we were there about Mike Adams :-)

I just thought of this

If it is Parrish’s fault that guys aren’t hitting and should be fired, it must be McDowell’s fault that JV gave up those runs yesterday and McDowell should be fired.
/sarcasm

Really though, as I have said before, Parrish cant force a guy to listen and he isn’t up there hitting for them. You win some you lose some, and at the end of the season, you hope to have a .550-.600 winning percentage. At this point, I think the best we can hope for is to remain close in the standings til the all-star break. Then the guys get some much needed rest, Fredi reads the “managing pitchers for dummies” book, and we hit the second half on a roll all the way to the W.S.

by HeyMikey on Jun 27, 2011 9:18 AM EDT reply actions

HeyMikey

our pitching staff may have the occasional hiccup but it is one of the best in MLB in terms of performance. In fact our pitching staff is currently far out-producing expectations.

Our offense on the other hand is far under-perfoming in nearly every category. It is not an occasional hiccup, it is underperforming on a near nightly basis.

The difference is that McDowell teaches a very good philosophy and helps pitchers adjust when they start to fall. Thus normally our pitchers pitch up to potential. The occiasional hiccup is when the pitcher catches a bad break, bad ump, or bad luck (in terms of fielding errors).

Larry Parrish has a horrible hitting philosophy and apparently can’t get through to the hitters in terms of making the right adjustments. That is why our OPB is one of the worst in MLB and our hitters are taking longer to break out of slumps (see Uggla, Dan). It is telling that nearly every braves hitter who listens to Parrish is performing below career levels. No Parrish can’t bat for them but he can teach them better plate discipline and help them with hitting mechanics…but thus far he has been unable to do so.

Thats the difference….
