A Big Game From Dan Uggla Helps Atlanta To a 10-1 Victory Over San Diego

Talk about a complete 180 from the game a night ago. One night after getting destroyed by San Diego 11-2, the Braves got the bats going and beat the Padres 10-1.

The Braves jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Jason Heyward doubled down the right field line with one out, and scored on a single from Chipper Jones that just got under the glove of a diving Jason Bartlett. Chipper's single gave Atlanta a 1-0 lead.

Atlanta scored again in the second inning, as Padres starter Dustin Moseley walked Dan Uggla with one out. Two batters later, Nate McLouth singled to center field but the ball went under Cameron Maybin's glove, allowing Uggla to come around and score from first to make it 2-0 Braves.

Jair Jurrjens gave up the lone San Diego run of the night in the third inning, as Alberto Gonzalez led off the inning by crushing a home run to left field to cut the lead in half at 2-1.

The rest after the jump..

Star-divide

Atlanta got that run back in the sixth inning, as Jason Heyward hit his second double of the night with one out. An intentional walk to Brian McCann put runners on first and second for Freddie Freeman. Freeman lined a single up the middle that scored Heyward to make it a 3-1 game.

Nothing came of it, but I have to mention Dan Uggla's great at bat in the sixth, as he worked a nine pitch walk from Mosleley. That ended Moseley's night, and he finished with a line of 5.2 innings pitched, five hits, three runs (two earned) while walking four and striking out three. Ernesto Frieri coaxed a pop-up to the catcher from Alex Gonzalez to escape the jam.

Jurrjens worked out of a two on, none out jam in the bottom of the sixth, his third of the game. He wasn't particularly sharp as he walked four, but he was effective and worked in and out of trouble in his six innings of work.

The Braves broke the game open in the seventh inning. Brian McCann beat the shift with a bunt to reach with one out. Freddie Freeman doubled off the left field wall to put runners on second and third for Dan Uggla. Uggla continued his great game at the plate with a single to left that score McCann to make it 4-1. Alex Gonzalez scored Freeman with a sacrifice bunt to the right side to up the lead to 5-1.

Nate McLouth then hit a ground-rule double to left that brought in Uggla to give Atlanta a 6-1 lead.

The Braves weren't done scoring quite yet, as they put up four runs in the ninth inning. Jordan Schafer finally got into the hit column with a triple to left center and scored on a double from Chipper. Brian McCann walked to put runners on first and second, and Dan Uggla crushed a high fastball to to centerfield for a three-run homer to complete his great game at the plate.

Uggla finished the game 2-3 with two walks, four RBI's and that home run. Jair Jurrjens earned his tenth win of the season. Eric O' Flaherty, Jonny Venters, and Scott Linebrink combined to pitch three scoreless innings to finish out the game.

Also

only the 5th Braves pitcher to win 10 games out of their first 14 starts in a season. Not bad, considering all the good pitchers that have come through the Braves organization:)

Great win

JJ pitched pretty good, but the offense looked awesome. Uggla looked really good. The HR was a blast and he also drew two walks. Let’s hope he can continue this. Very encouraging night from the offense viewpoint, especially Uggla, McLouth, and Heyward.

Very encouraging night from the offense viewpoint, especially Uggla, McLouth, and Heyward.

And Freeman.

Appropriate that Jair is on the same pace as Tom in ’02. Tonight he was positively Glavinesque. His coolness and focus on the mound is truly excellent, especially for a guy of his age and experience level.

I really enjoyed Uggla shutting up that drunk who was near the field mic (for @ 5 minutes.)

As Joe Simpson was noting on the broadcast, Uggs finally had his head and lead shoulder locked in place and was not continuing to pull off the ball on his swing. This mechanical change seemingly was the difference maker.

Heyward, Uggla, and McLouth all waking up at the same time? This could be fun. Now if only Schafer could get some hits to fall.

by drumzalicious on Jun 26, 2011 12:33 AM EDT reply actions

Love this win!

Chipper looked good, doing his RBI thing. Loved that Uggla produced some runs. Man! he has some serious strength to pull off a home run off of that ball! And Heyward with two doubles, as well as his performance last game. And McLouth! Hittiing the ball! I feel like I have entered an alternate universe, and I like it! Every starter except Gonzales got a hit.

by BravesFaninAZ on Jun 26, 2011 12:42 AM EDT reply actions

Chipper – it’s nice to see him going with what’s pitched and swinging for hits/RBIs instead of always trying to hit a HR.
He has the HR power, but as a veteran he’s showing that one doesn’t always have to have an ego at bat. Love the guy.

Good for Mr. Uggla to start coming around too.

I had my lower right wisdom tooth taken out not last Tuesday but the Tuesday before that. My gums are still a little bit swollen. Since my teeth are impacted they have to be surgically removed. It sucks. Good luck to you.

that sounds an awful lot like my situation

cept im only getting this one wisdom tooth, or so far just this one. and of course its on the side where i already had a tooth that took 2 surgeons and an orthodontist to figure out how to get detached from my upper jaw. so this should be fun.

Had a single wisdom tooth pulled about a month ago. All it took was a good wrenching on with what I would describe as a tiny crowbar. The sound of roots getting ripped out is something you don’t forget.

But, it doesn’t take long to recover from only one being taken out. I was eating regular foods again in 3 days.

Great nite for the Braves all around.

Glad to see Danny Boy, doing his thing. How can you not root for him to succeed, Braves fan or not. The Man works hard as hell, day in and day out, doesn’t moan or complain, runs everything out hard, and is a great teammate.

Also, good to see JJ get another “lucky” win, I’m sure it will be noted as. THe kid did not nearly have his best “stuff,” yet got in and out of jams, pitching to contact when needed, and showing his greatest attribute of all, his composure.

Everyone seemed to have a great game, what a nite.

Also, congrats J-Hey on the two doubles, hopefully a sign of more to come, for the young whippersnapper lol.

Good game and to you fellow TC’ers goodnite

JJ is a really good pitcher. Really good ones don’t necessarily not let men get on base, but they tend to get the critical outs.

Yeah

great to get JJ his 10th win despite that and on a night he didn’t have his best stuff, Dan did good 2-3 with 2 bb’s and 4rbi, jhey also hit 2 doubles he is coming around, Schafer got robbed of a couple hits again what else is new, and good to see McLouth doing well and for chip to be driving them in. Also good to see EOF get some work only his 2nd appearance in the last 10 games, Unfortunately Venters had warmed up so he pitched in a 6-1 game. Also Freeman with real hard hits to left-center was good to see, and almost hit one out.

Venters looked tired. Only 5 of his 11 pitches were strikes. Hated seeing him pitch in a 6-1 game.

There really was no reason at all for him to be pitching. We need him for the stretch run, not 6-1 games in June.

My slump is busted.

1-3 this year when watching the Braves, going for 2-3 tomorrow!

Petco was awesome tonight. 70, sunny and a breeze at first pitch and the crowd was 70% Braves fans by the time the 9th inning rolled around.

Looks like Wren was prophetic about us not needing to trade if our lineup would start playing to their capabilities. If Gonzales would start back up with the occasional hit, and the rest continue to contribute, we are set to make a serious run.

by BravesFaninAZ on Jun 26, 2011 2:05 AM EDT reply actions

I agree, no reason to go out and make a trade when we have everything we need already.

by MVPrado on Jun 26, 2011 2:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I still think we need a CF that can get on-base more, Schafer’s OBP dipped below .300

Right now he’s a great defensive replacement, that’s about it. He needs an OBP of .330 to be useful.

by Broccoman on Jun 26, 2011 2:21 AM EDT up reply actions

But when he lives up to that talent……

by MVPrado on Jun 26, 2011 2:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed Schafer is not the lead off man we need. Not saying I hate the kid but he really isn’t good for the leadoff spot although Fredo will keep putting him there.

by Ultada on Jun 26, 2011 2:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Give the kid some time. Rome wasnt build in a day.

by MVPrado on Jun 26, 2011 2:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not really down on Schafer yet. His approach at the plate isn’t too bad at all, considering his first go-round in the majors. Also, over the last few games he’s had about 4 or 5 hits robbed from him by just outstanding plays. With how hard he’s hitting the ball, and his improved approach, I think he’ll be just fine once luck catches up.

My thoughts as well.

Whether or not he should be hitting leadoff is one thing, but I think he’s definitely earned the chance to keep the CF job.

why did Fredi use Venters in the 8th with the Braves up big?

by Buddy Holly on Jun 26, 2011 6:06 AM EDT reply actions

Prob cause he had him warming up when the lead wasn’t so big. Warming a guy up and not using him is like using him for the most part.

A few more of those will put an end to those defensive shifts and open up some holes for him to swing away. Take what they give you.

Yeah, he has tried it a few times, this one was successful. A couple more bunt singles, and they’ll end that craptastic shift.

I doubt it. I was looking at his spray chart, and an infield overshift makes perfect sense against him. If anything, they can just bring the shortstop in and over a bit.

Hilariously, the overshift doesn’t work against McCann a fair bit of the time because he scalds balls past where anyone can get them.
