Beachy Strikes Out 11, Braves Complete Sweep Of Jays
This Beachy kid...he seems to be pretty good at throwing a baseball.
Brandon Beachy struck out a career-high 11 hitters as the Braves completed a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays with a 5-1 win.
Beachy was making his first start after being sidelined with a strained oblique muscle and looked incredible. He struck out the side in the first inning after giving up a leadoff single to Yunel Escobar and struck out two in each of the next four innings. Beachy really only made one mistake in the game, and Jose Bautista hit it for a solo home run in the third inning, his 22nd of the season.
In support of Beachy, the Braves smacked a couple of home runs of their own. Dan Uggla blasted a two-run homer in the second inning off starter Jo-Jo Reyes and Brian McCann added one in the third. Brooks Conrad smacked a pinch-hit home run in the seventh inning, but only after replays confirmed it; the ball glanced off the top of the outfield wall and struck the wall behind it before bouncing back onto the field.
Bautista robbed Jordan Schafer of what would've been Atlanta's fourth home run of the game immediately after Conrad hit his in the seventh.
Beachy allowed only four hits in six innings and walked two. The bullpen again provided scoreless relief with Linebrink, Venters and Kimbrel throwing one inning each.

Did Scafer look overmatched at the plate today?
by TBuzz on Jun 22, 2011 4:28 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Reyes is a Lefty with a mid 90s fastball...
You don’t need samples or stats to see how well he is handling himself at the dish…
by TBuzz on Jun 22, 2011 4:38 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Tonight. I’m not saying he did badly tonight. In fact he looked really good. But first of all, Reyes isn’t that great regardless of “stuff” and that doesn’t outweigh the many times I’ve watched Schafer struggle to hit a mid 90s fastball foul to stay alive. If this is the finished product then I am even that much more confident that we need to make a move.
No
I was commenting on an earlier conversation we were having about how Schafer looked overmatched and struggled just to foul off belt high fastballs.
If he can turn on one from a Lefty…
by TBuzz on Jun 22, 2011 4:52 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
The overwhelming majority of the time he has looked overmatched. I’m not sure why you would assume that tonight’s performance outweighs all the others.
If the assumption is what we see is what we'll always get...
No. If you think he has the capacity to improve I feel his past performance is not the best indicator of future performance.
by TBuzz on Jun 22, 2011 5:10 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Under no circumstances would I agree that Schafer has looked “overmatched the overwhelming majority of the time”. He’s had a boatload of very good at bats.
"Bunting's my favorite." Fredi G
Perhaps the wording was a bit strong, the point I was trying to make is that tonight’s performance doesn’t outweigh the many times that I’ve thought that he seemed out of his depth. This is partly perception but surely I’m not alone. We should all hope our prospects show flashes of brilliance and that is exactly what Schafer has done, but to assume those flashes are the “real Jordan Schafer” seems a little optimistic to me.
To me the ‘real Schafer’ or his true talent level for the bulk of his career should be right about .260/.350/.430 with fluctuating HR numbers between 5-15 and 30-40 SB along with elite level CF defense. In the long run that is a very valuable player but maybe not a Sizemoresque superstar.

Sounds pretty awesome to me. That slash line would be worth a lot from a premium defensive CF. I’m just not sure that I’m seeing that guy yet.
And you probably won’t see that guy this year or even next year, but can he can do that in the future? Absolutely
First month in 2009
.273/.415/.439
Then the injury.
IF (and that’s a big if) he can get back to those numbers he had pre-injury, then he’s a roughly 4-5 WAR centerfielder. AKA a huge asset.
It may not come back until 2012 if at all, but he has shown the occasional glimpse of promise this year.

Post Injury
I saw him in Chattanooga playing AAA. He looked pretty over matched at the plate, roughly a year ago. I watched him several times last August, on CSS, playing AAA. He looked better, but not anything like MLB-ready. I watched him in ST and a couple more CSS AAA games this spring, he seemed to be continueing to improve, but was reaching base primarily on drag bunts and infield hits. Now, he’s hitting the ball a lot more sharply. He seems to be aiming for going the other way a lot. He seems to be getting much better control of the bat and much better contact. I have no clue about “pitches seen” data, but to Johnny Eyeball, he’s making pitchers work. That’s not “over-matched” in my book. That’s a guy on the right path to making it back to MLB.
"Bunting's my favorite." Fredi G
Jordan is 3rd on the team amongst starters in pitches seen per at-bat. Behind Heyward and Freeman.

But it has seemed that lots of times fouling the ballw is the best he can hope for on certain pitches. We really shouldn’t weigh it as heavily if he sees a couple of good pitches an AB and is only able to fight them off.
That’s how a lmany players see a lot of pitches. Fight off the really tough pitches and hope for something you can handle.
All I know, like bighop said, his performance level is better than it was last year and better than it was in AAA. He is progressing, slowly.

lol really?
Have you looked at his numbers?
probably not
but forget it…This is a dead end topic with you. I’m tired of the same old bs
Absolutely. I firmly believe that Schafer could be the real deal, but I think we can all agree that he isn’t there yet, and there are few signs that he will get there soon. He has stepped in and helped an injury ravaged outfield, but to assume that he will become the fully actualized ball player that he is capable of so soon just seems unrealistic. I dont think that Schafer is the answer for 2011. I would really love to be wrong though.
I’ve posted repeatedly that an outfield of Heyward, Prado, a trade aquisition and McLouth 4th is a good idea with Schafer in AAA getting AB’s. I think we agree on that.
"Bunting's my favorite." Fredi G
Absolutely. I’m just making sure that I’m not pidgeon-holed into an anti-Schafer stance. Part of being a prospect is expected growth and I think that Schafer is still a prospect at this point.
I’ve been a vocal supporter of trading for a CF bat.
BUT
As it stands now, the team is 10 games over .500 with several key players under performing or injured. If the Braves luck and performance starts to swing in their direction, I think it might be wise to keep their assets for now and enjoy having an elite defensive CF to compliment the offense.

There’s only 3 positions where I’ve been ok with having an all defense-poor bat player. Catcher, short stop, and centerfield.
I actually think having elite defensive players at SS and CF while piling in the offense elsewhere is one of the better team building techniques, especially when you have the pitching that we do.

Verlanders Career
ERA- 4.43 in 181 1st Innings
Venters
ERA- 1.29 in 129 Innings(mostly 1 inning appearances)
Obviously the question is would Jonnny drop off? He is after all “Everyday”.
Not apples to apples...
Try comparing the 1st innings of Maddux and Glavine while you’re at it. It’s typically when a quality starter is most vulnerable.
I was simply saying that Verlander’s approach is geared toward 6+ IP per outing, which means he’s not throwing his fastball at 100%…maybe only 85%-90%…and that’s still 97-98 mph with movement even in the late innings. If he were to get into a reliever’s routine and pitch 1 IP at 100% he would run a 100-102 mph fastball along with his 3 other plus pitches. Imagine John Smoltz closing, except his fastball is 10% faster…

Marlins
You Can’t Predict Baseball pointed out the other day that on May 29, the Marlins were ten games above .500, at 29-19. Since then, they’ve gone 4-22. That’s a damn near impossible bad streak in baseball… Bill James always said that, at the beginning of any season, you know in advance that there are 40 games you are going to win no matter what, and 40 games you are going to lose no matter what. If the Marlins kept losing at their current rate, they’d finish 47-115.

Our record is 43-33
which is good enough for second best in the NL and fourth best in MLB. If we only maintained the same pace, we would be on track for a 92 win season. (For reference only, we wildcarded into the playoffs in 2010 with a 91-71 final record).
J-Hey willing, we will get healthier and we will be more offensively productive the rest of the way.
And I say there can be little doubt that our pitching staff is going to continue to be dominant.
Earlier this afternoon, I read a piece by Bowman from a few days back wherein Young Jordan was quoted as saying it could be “a very special season.”
I agree! And I’m just about to get really excited about this team! I’m thinking Championship Season again! Who’s with me?

Chipper who is a great winner is going to push the entire team to show up and compete day after day. Freddie is going to get more and more consistent and walk away with a ROY. Hinske and Brooksie are going to continue to win games coming off the bench. Ross is due for more heroics.

“I see no reason that can’t continue.” I see one… their bullpen. Take a look at three guys that they’ve been depending on: Bastardo, Stutes, and Kendrick. The difference between their ERAs and their FIPs are, respectively, -1.96, -1.77, and -1.98 respectively. Comparisons to xFIP look even worse (although I will admit to being a bit skeptical of xFIP). Bastardo’s BABIP against is .153. That’s just not sustainable. Now, Bastardo can regress some and still be a very good reliever, but Stutes and Kendrick don’t have that wiggle room. If I were a Phillies fan looking at these numbers, I’d be worried. And perhaps the most damnable stat of all: they’ve let Danys Baez pitch 31.2 innings this year, the most of any of their relievers. His ERA is 3.98 and that’s right where his FIP says it should be. It’s hard to be a division winning team when you have the likes of Baez pitching 60-70 innings a year.
"Some people give their bodies to science. I gave mine to baseball." -- Ron Hunt
I think it’s definitely possible. Their rotation is on par with what we had in the mid to late 90’s, and I’m pretty sure we had 3 100+ win seasons in there from ‘97-’99.

Maddog in his prime is arguably the greatest pitcher of all time, so even as great as Halladay is, I tend to agree with you there.
Cliff Lee since he’s gotten it together has been brilliant and is slightly better than what Glavine gave you in his best years, IMO. This is certainly debatable. Glavine was remarkable for his longevity and sustained excellence and will obviously end up with the better career.
Smoltzie (when healthy) was superior to Oswalt, no question.
Cole Hamels is better than Denny Neagle ever was and probably better than Millwood in his prime. Advantage Phillies.
It’s close, and you’re probably right that we had the superior rotation. Perhaps I should have said “almost on par”….

I would still rank Lee behind Glavine. Tom was truly brilliant in his best years (’91, most of ’92, before the rib injury, ’98 and 2000) and definitely has Lee on career.

My favorite ball-player ever. I have an old jersey that I owned when I was 9, and it fits my girlfriend perfectly. You already know that I try to get her to wear it at every opportunity. However, the line is apparently when we are both in Braves apparel. So my dilemma is, should my adorable gf wear my 13 year old jersey or should I wear my McCann Jersey. Breasts tend to win the day.
Sorry, but you're wrong (partially)
Glavine in his prime was better than Lee in his prime, and Lee needs to put together many more seasons to even be mentioned in the same sentence with Glavine. Cole Hamels is good, but ‘on par’ with Avery and Millwood. Better than Neagle? Yes, but Neagle was only with us for a short period.
What Phillies fans fail to recognize is that the Braves rotations will go down as the best in history because of their longevity. We had the best starting rotation for at least 10 years, and they were better than anyone else by a long shot. No one was even close. This year, one could make an argument that our staff matches up with theirs and is pretty equal. That Phillies staff needs about nine more years before they can be compared with our staffs.
It’s funny how sports fans have such short memories. Everyone (especially the media and ESPN) is always wanting to label someone the best ever, while ignoring the past.

Settle down with “short memories” nonsense there. The fact that I can recall our mid-to-late 90’s teams should be proof enough that I’m not suffering from short memory. BTW, how many innings did Avery throw for us in the mid-to-late 90’s?

Really enjoyed watching Beachy today. I had wondered if he would be the same guy from earlier in the season. I’m still not sure about that. He might have been better.

Why I continue to listen to fantasy “experts” I have no idea. Great game by Beachy. Great win by the braves.
We'll trade you for Cheryl Tunt. Tome again? Still nothing?
Hindsight…but his injury was batting related. So much for “experts”.

I definitely went ahead and started him. His rehab start and the nature of his injury made no indication that he would struggle. And we seemed to have a great game plan to handle the Jays hitters, so it was a no-brainer for me.

This team is so frustrating.
They play so well early in the week, and just bomb on the weekends. We should be 5 up on the Phillies by now. I really hope they get it all together soon and get some consistency.
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

Ha...
I’m not worried about the Phils.
The Braves are one of the few teams that matches up nicely with them.
As long as we keep winning, we’ll make the playoffs; I don’t care if we win the NL East. (I do care, but y’all know what I’m saying.)

Yep!
Considering how “bad” we’ve been, I’m stoked we’re 2 games up in the WC!

I know it’s not the same thing, but it had to be done:
“One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going
to take my nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old
burned-out warehouse. “Oh no,” I said, “Disneyland burned down.”
He cried and cried, but I think that deep down he thought it was a
pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but
decided to go home instead."
Yep.
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

Braves have the better overall team, just piss-poor performance from many of them.
So I could agree the Braves should be ahead of them, perhaps not 5 games though.

I really wish Fredi would take it easy on Venters. The guy is brilliant, and I’d love to continue to watch him pitch after this season.

And make sure he has plenty of female suitors at his hotel room everynight
he shan’t be using his arm/hand for anything other than pitching.

Agreed
I love having Braves named to the team. I wish there was not actually a game.

He's on pace to pitch over 100 innings
I looked up how often a relief guy has thrown 100 IP in a season without any starts and it’s only happened five times since 2000.
And most of those were throw away guys or guys who were failed starters being converted to the pen.
About the only comparison was Guillermo Mota who was a very good set up guy who pitched 105 innings in 2003 and then 97 innings in 2004 and then completely crashed. We might want to start handling Venters with a little more care considering what an asset he’s developed into.
Lets all take a second to appreciate how godly Brian McCann has been lately
His last 5 games
7-16, 4 HR, 6 RBI, 1 SB
In June he’s hit .297/.415/.667 with 6 HR for a 1.082 OPS
He’s now on season’s pace for 30 doubles, 28 HR, and 92 RBI with a line of .302/.380.523
Brian McCann is the face of this franchise.

Whoever has him under the radar needs to stop. I think most give him credit though. On almost every list of potential All-Stars in the national media he is listed, and usually with very nice comments as well. I think a lot of people view Kershaw and him in a similar light.

I really hope
that Uggla can start stringing some good games together. We coulc really use his bat to come alive. This game was a good start!
Good to see some power behind Schafer’s bat. Gives him more flexibility in what he can do, and makes the outfielders respect him more with regard to how they have to play him. A good hitter can see that, and place the ball in front of them if they play him back, and vice versa.
Are any on the post
going to give Linebrink some love? He has been pretty damn consistent of late, about getting through innings fairly cleanly.
Watching Yunel.....
….gesticulating like a teenager and pouting when our runner (Lugo?) was called safe on a bang-bang play, made me glad all over he was dealt to the Jays.
That was bush. In the long run, I think we got the good end of that deal. Even in the short run, we didn’t do too badly.
