OT: My Father's Braves Collection

This off-topic post is one I'm sure you'll love. My father collects Braves cards and Braves objects from a friend at the local flea market. The two are friends, so the dealer doesn't sell high, so my dad buys low but gets a lot. On the night we beat the Mets at Citi Field 6-3, he came home at nine o'clock with a cardboard box full of Braves things. I took pictures of them, and here they are:

The first is a picture of a Javier Lopez-signed baseball in a cylindrical container with a Certificate of Authenticity:

The next one is a picture of the actual ball with the blue signature of Javy Lopez:

The next 3 pictures are an assortment of unorthadox Braves cards. There is a "playing card" with John Smoltz as an ace in 2000. The other one commemmorates Warren Spahn as a Cy Young award winner in the year 2004:

The next one has a 2005 Marcus Giles card and a 2005 Russ Ortiz card:

These next two cards are of Chipper Jones. The one on the right is 2008, while the year of the one on the left is not known:

This next one is of a souvenir batting helmet from Home Depot. The bag is pictured:

This next pic is the back of the actual helmet, showing the Home Depot logo.

This next picture shows the 3 pages of David Justice cards.

This next one is a 1999 series action figure called "To the Majors".

John Smoltz wishes you a Happy Birthday.

The last two pics are an autographed team ball. I don't know what year it is, but I could make out Tom Glavine, Chipper Jones, and Mark Wohlers' signatures on it.

The final picture shows the many card binders and bags my dad has of Braves cards. He also collects Georgia Bulldogs' cards. In the box he brought home, he also had an autographed Mohammad Massaquoi card with his jersey. In my parents' closet there is a Chipper Jones minor-league bobblehead with a Macon Braves uniform on. The bobblehead could not be reached for photography. If you look hard at the picture, on the left of the bottom shelf you'll see a frosted beer mug. Another valuable thing: I got, for $15 from the same dealer that is a friend of my dad, an Albert Pujols with a piece of his jersey card in his high school days. It's in a case that you cannnot open, with a mint grade of 10. I also have a jersey card of Michael Vick, but I treasure that less.

The card my dad undoubtedly treasures the most is an error card. It is a 1990 card with the name Tom Glavine at the top, but a picture of a young John Smoltz.

Hope you liked this post. Go Braves!

Your dad is a lucky guy!

He must have married a Braves fan, evidenced by your existence. Let’s face it, chicks don’t dig collectors.

My day has come!

Neat

I’m not a collector but I have a couple card worth mentioning. A Bowman Chrome Signed albert Pujols Rookie Card. A Ken Griffy rookie card, with game worn jersey. And some sort of Carl Ystremski bubble gum card, which is really neat

Blurry pictures are blurry

this would be another example of a fanshot….

Bully for your dad, but I would wager to say a number of us on this board could likely match such a collection. We love our team, and having items that reflect that is one way to show that love.

Questions for those who collect signed baseball

How much of a difference does it make that the autograph is in the sweet spot rather than right underneath the logo. I enjoy getting autographs from players and I find that they often by default sign the ball not at the sweet spot.

I’m really just collecting the balls for my own sake but I was just wondering if I ever want to get maybe a little bit of cash for them, how much of a difference that is as well as what is better between a signed authentic major league ball that has been used (include some major league dirt) in pregame warmup vs. a brand new unused signed authentic ball.

Professional Collectors will prefer them unused and brand new except for this guy:

the sweet spot just looks better

collectors, such as myself, want to display them and it looks a lot better if they’re all signed in the sweet spot. Yeah, they will sign them in random places in person, you have to specifically ask for the sweet spot, especially if they’re not very well known, they think you’re just getting as many autographs as possible. Also, call them by their first name. And yes, use a real baseball, not a game used one.

By the way, my dad thinks the signed team ball is about 96 or 97. It has Glav, Denny Neagle, Chipper Jones, and Mark Wohlers.

I took a closer look at the ball, and those signatures are bleeding somewhat. I can identify Mark Lemke, Chipper, Tom Glavine, Mark Wohlers, John Smoltz, Bobby Cox.

Yep. I have the same ball. The MLB logo and positioning is how I knew.

No offense

but that team ball one looks like the ones you buy in the gift shop.

The ball is in a case fitted just for a baseball. The 2 halves come off.

yea i have some cases like that

the ball itself looks like printed signatures, because the only type of pen that would be that dark and thick like that would be a sharpie, and if it’s supposedly from 96 or 97, it would be bleeding like crazy by now.

I've got a huge folder of Braves cards from when I was a kid

But my favorite has always been and will always be this Chipper Jones rookie card

Back when baseball cards were worth something I would sit for hours and lookup all my card numbers in those ‘price guide" books, and Chipper’s rookie card was worth $25-$30 bucks at the time, which was a big deal to 12 year old me.

My Braves collection is a little different

I’ve got the shorts I crapped in when Brooksy hit the GS against Cincy last year bronzed & on display on my mantle.

one pair of crapped in shorts a collection does not make

With the way they’re playing this year, I’m sure to be making some additions to the collection. Also I failed to mention my twisted & contorted rally cap which it seems I’m constantly wearing & the ripped jersey (sackcloth & ashes thing) that gets torn everytime Uggla whiffs.

I've posted my stuff here many times over the years

So here’s a few ones i don’t think i’ve showed:

These are 3 different Chipper material and autograph cards

Same for Dale Murphy

Maddux autograph

I have several things that aren’t card related that i love, but 2 favorites are my tomahawk with 1991 World Series logo on it, and a bottle of Chipper’s Chardonnay

Coming soon: winningugly visits Atlanta, takes dump in royhobbs’ Braves hat.
