The Braves lost another series over Fathers' Day Weekend to the Rangers. They did avoid a sweep on Sunday behind a solid Jair Jurrjens effort, but had gone down 6-2, and 5-4 in the first two games of the set.
Randall Delgado spent a night with the big league club on Friday, and pitched pretty well. He allowed just one run until the fifth, when he was touched for three more. Somehow, not even the Braves' prolific offense could figure out Colby Lewis that night. This was disappointing.
Saturday's afternoon affair turned into a night game after a two hour rain delay. Derek Lowe gave up four runs leaving the game at 4-2 when the storm rolled through Atlanta. Brian McCann homered and Dan Uggla drove in Jordan Schafer after the rain delay ended to tie the game up at four apiece. Scott Proctor gave up the extra inning run that won the game for the Rangers.
The Braves got a 4-2 win behind the bats of the slumping Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman on Sunday. Both slumps have been really brief, but each young player made some good swings today and both even went the other way. Dan Uggla had a ripped base hit to left again and scored a run. He showed similar promise in back-to-back games in Houston so we should know not to declare his slump over. He also still seems to be stuck in a mindset that only allows him to take hard pull swings, though his timing is coming along.
The defense was horrific this weekend. Dan Uggla and Nate McLouth flashed the leather on Sunday, but the Braves committed an absurd seven errors in the three game series. There were also some plays that the Braves have been making all season that they just couldn't seem to come up with. This hasn't been typical and will hopefully be put to rest against the Blue Jays this week.
The former Braves for the series:
Neftali Feliz pitched two perfect innings of relief, striking out four of six batters.
Elvis Andrus went 5 for 15, scored 3 runs, and swiped a base.
Matt Harrison was impressive in the rain delayed game on Saturday. He went six and a third innings and gave up three earned runs, but what was really incredible was that he returned to the game after the two hour break. Pretty ballsy.
