Tomahawk Chops: Daily Atlanta Braves Clippings For Monday, June 13th

"What? No hug for me Brian? Okay, high five, whatever, Kimbrel always gets a hug..."

Your one-page daily morning overview of Atlanta Braves news:

Braves quotes after Sunday win over ‘Stros | Atlanta Braves
Fredi Gonzalez, on Tommy Hanson: "Fourteen strikeouts. Roger and I were trying to decide, he was borderline pitch count after six innings. [Hanson] said, ‘Oh, I’m good.’ He was good. He finished the seventh inning and it was probably the best inning he had. We were able to do what we wanted with the bullpen by him going seven innings. He was outstanding. O’Flaherty good again, and Jonny in the ninth inning. "Danny’s swinging the bat well. We’re starting to see some good signs. And Mac is doing what he does best."

Uggla: signs of emerging from epic slump | Atlanta Braves
"The way I can tell, the biggest difference, is the way I’m taking pitches now," Uggla said. "My timing has been better the last couple of days. When you’re on time, you’re going to give yourself a chance."

Looks like Braves now have co-closers | Atlanta Braves
Gonzalez said in spring training that he planned to use both pitchers to closer games, according to matchups and who was better rested. But he had scrapped the plan and gone with Kimbrel as the full-time closer until Thursday at Florida. Venters got the save opportunity that night, after Kimbrel had blown a two-run lead in the ninth inning on Wednesday.

Hinske, Schafer, Young stepping up | braves.com: News
"Schafer and Young are making a case for themselves," Gonzalez said. "All those guys who have gotten an opportunity to play have done well. It's a good problem to have, it really is.

Schafer a stolen-base threat for Braves | braves.com: News
"He gives us a different weapon to attack and score runs," said manager Fredi Gonzalez. "Yesterday, he stole a base and got himself in scoring position. Before that, we'd have to bang the walls out." "I think Schafer's ignited us really," said Eric Hinske. "He's getting on base, getting second base, and it makes it a little easier on the hitters trying to get the guy in."

Braves make up 526 games in 20 years, back to .500 | Atlanta Braves
The Braves franchise, known by various names and locales from Boston to Milwaukee to Atlanta, was a charter member of the National League in 1876, and kept its won–lost record above .500 from July 25 of its inaugural season until June 4, 1923, when the Boston Braves lost to the Brooklyn Dodgers to leave the all-time record at 3,084-3,084. A loss to the Phillies the next day dropped the Braves below .500, where they stayed for a remarkable 88 years. Until last night, when McCann homered in the 10th and the Braves won 6-3 to bring their franchise record to an even .500 at 9,982-9,982.

Atlanta Braves at Houston Astros - June 13, 2011 | MLB.com Preview
Brian McCann drove in his 500th run in his 811th career game Saturday, a mark that puts the catcher in some elite company. Since the Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966, only three players have recorded all of their first 500 career RBIs as a Brave in fewer games than McCann: Bob Horner (733); Chipper Jones (752) and David Justice (782). Also, among players who primarily played catcher since 1950, McCann reached the 500-RBI mark in the fourth-fewest games, trailing only Mike Piazza (661), Johnny Bench (771) and Victor Martinez (786).

Emory, Braves Partnership Seeks to Aid Veterans' PTSD Recovery | The Emory Wheel
Emory established a partnership with the Atlanta Braves on Memorial Day, creating a three-year initiative that provides resources to veterans recovering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the Southeast upon their returns from Iraq and Afghanistan.

A Moc Gets a Pleasant Surprise | TheLedger.com
"What Gus has is a funky arm slot and he's going to break some wooden bats, and that's what you're going to see when he gets to pro ball," Meyer said.

Gondee...

with draftees slowly signing, are we gonna have a little list of the names signed on the right side of the main page like last year?

I switched sides, mainly to throw folks off.
I’ve been keeping that as up to date as I know. None have been announced by the club, yet, but I’m searching every day for news from other outlets to see who has reportedly signed.

Great little dashboard of recent news. We. Rollin’. Now.

I hope the two closers thing works.

I think it’s a good idea but it all depends on how Kimbrel will handle it.

I actually thought that was the way they should have gone to begin with… use Venters and Kimbrel (and EOF) according to the matchup at the moment. However, Fredi decided to go with the rigid 7th-8th-9th inning assignments. That seemed to be actually working pretty well. However, everyone started focusing on Kimbrel’s blown saves, even though I think that was largely a function of the Braves not scoring a lot of runs resulting in an abnormal number of high-leverage situations. Plus the fact that both Venters and Kimbrel have been over-used; Venters handles it better in the short term but, as we saw last season, by August it will wear him down.

The ironic thing is that the committee approach could very well result in Kimbrel being placed into more high-leverage situations rather than fewer. However, it may be perceived as a demotion by Kimbrel, and that could be very bad for the club. A lot depends on how important Kimbrel, Venters, and the Braves coaching staff think the save stat and the traditional closer role are. If Fredi and the coaches emphasize the idea of using the best pitcher with the right matchup in the highest-leverage situation, and not putting too much emphasis on the save stat, then it should work out.

Based on game logs and WPA

Without question, Venters has been facing, and overcoming, far higher leverage situations than Kimbrel has, in his mostly handling of the 8th innings. Maybe if Kimbrel decides that he loves the WPA stat, he’ll be gung-ho about getting the opportunity to tackle more 8th innings. But despite agreeing with your idea, hoping for relievers and managers to not care about the stupid save stat is like wishing to win the lottery. I’d be willing to bet money that Fredi is going to stick with one of them in the 9th at some point later this year.

My only issue for wanting it to stay as is...

is control. If they come in with a guy on, I like Venters. Kimbrel his control would be a concern, so I like him coming in to an inning clean where even if he walks 2 or 3, he can K the next 3 and get out unscathed in the run column. If someone is on, those walks become a bigger issue.

Any idea who stays?

When Heyward, McLouth and Prado come back from the DL, who will stay with the big club? I figure Young and Hicks are pretty sure bets to go back to AAA. That seems to leave Mather or Schafer as odd man out. Schafer seems to be making it a tough decision. Mather would have to go thru waivers again. Would they keep both and send Conrad down? Tough decision coming before long.

Diory?

Fangraphs, on Craig Kimbrel: "His strikeout rates look like they’re coming from a video game"

by carpengui on Jun 13, 2011 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m guessing they won’t send Diory down because he’s the only other option at SS. However… based on this reasoning, what was the purpose of moving the AAA affiliation to Gwinnett? The idea is that they can get a player from the G-Braves over to the Ted on very short notice. True, if A-Gon were to be injured during a game, they’d be in a pinch having to use Conrad at SS, but it would only be for part of one game, and then the next morning you’ve got Diory back. Even if the Braves are on the road, in this day and age it’s not that big a deal to fly a player out overnight.

I think they are pretty happy with Diory right now.

by bighop on Jun 13, 2011 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not saying he’s a bad player. But the main reason he’s with the Braves is to be a backup SS. Given that AGon does not have a history of injuries, Diory is unlikely to be needed in that role. Prado and Conrad are both better options for backup at 2B and 3B, and Hinske can handle 1B in a pinch. At this point if it’s a choice between sending down Diory or Schafer, I’d rather keep Schafer. We can get to Diory quickly if he’s at Gwinnett, and while he’s there he will get more playing time then he will with the big club.

Somewhere in this

There’s a joke about the undead, and the hopeful resurrection of Uggla’s talent, and the fact that AMC’s Walking Dead is supposedly doing some filming in Atlanta right now, but I can’t formulate a good one.

Venters has surrendered just one more run in his past 35 appearances, posting an 0.23 ERA since April 4 while allowing 18 hits and 11 walks with 43 strikeouts in 38-2/3 innings.
