Braves Onslaught Buries Astros 11-4
If you're reading this recap because you missed the game, I'm sorry. If you're reading this to relive the offensive onslaught, I don't blame you. There are few games that get fans pumped up like this one. After losing Prado to the DL with a staph infection and struggling offensively for a majority of the season, this is just what the doctor ordered. The Braves took home their fourth straight win, beating Aneury Rodriguez and the Astros 11-4.
Firstly, do you remember Pujols's shot off of Brad Lidge in the 2005 NLCS that hit the train tracks in left? Yeah, well Freddie Freeman's third inning shot into the second level of the right field seats went about twice as far. It was the closest thing to an out-of-the-parker you could hit in a dome. Alex Gonzalez followed up with a blast of his own that didn't cause Carlos Lee to flinch. It was just one of those nights. In a word: "awesome." Eric Hinske added a blast of his own to the short porch in left in the seventh inning and then Chipper struck in the eighth with an opposite field shot of his own. This was Chipper's first left-handed tater since May 12th.
The Braves were even stealing bases tonight. Chipper stole one! Schafer took second twice to bring his season total to five. Aside from Schafer's steal in the first that scored a run, the other two on the night were rendered unnecessary by huge offensive innings. But we saw just how crucial an asset Schafer's speed could be against the Marlins, and it's good to see that speed on the bases.
Hudson struggled a bit with his command at times but pitched competitively and still came away with an impressive line of six innings, two runs, seven hits, and managed not to walk any batters. In retrospect, it seems like the Braves' bats, though comforting, were probably an enemy to Huddy's control. In both the third and the fifth, Hudson sat down for quite some time and likely got a bit cold. Still a studly outing from ol' Timmy.
Matt Young recorded his first career multi-hit game as well as his first career RBI. Scott Proctor and Scott Linebrink pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings, that hopefully built some confidence for the relievers. Christhian Martinez gave up a two-run shot to Matt Downs in the bottom of the ninth, but that was the last of the damage that the 'Stros could muster up. I dropped my scorer's pen and started pumping both fists in the third, so here's the box score if you want to see the full stats.

Every Brave in the lineup with a HIT
I say we do it again :-)
Chipper post game interview, saying his dad made a suggestion today that helped his swing.
If Chipper Sr. can see something to suggest…

I think we might have
the wrong “Larry” as our hitting coach.

Was Larry Sr. hanging around the BP today? Maybe more than Chipper was paying attention to what he was saying.

I hope he was, and I hope they listened.
Larry, Sr. has taught more HOF hitters than Larry Parrish. (I’m just guessing; I don’t think Parrish has taught any likely HOFers.)

Fredi post game interview:
“I think Chipper likes hitting in front of Mom and Dad”.. “If that’s the case, maybe we’ll get them on the team somehow”.
Don’t tease us Fredi.

Yep, but you gotta start with 1.

Just saying I think we need to win 3 to win the series…

This is only the 4th time in Braves history
that they’ve hit at least 4 HRs and stolen at least 3 bases in the same game. The previous 3:
9/24/2005 vs. FLA (4 HR, 3 SB)
4/1/1996 vs. SFG (5 HR, 3 SB)
5/20/1990 vs. PIT (4 HR, 3 SB)
I was surprised it was that few.

I was surprised
We had stolen 3 bases in a game before.
Just kidding.

How far was Freeman's blast?
Didn’t catch the game, but seen the replay on Gameday and it was a majestic shot…..Had to be 450+
He KILLED it. The sound alone… you just knew that one was wayyy gone.

they
gave it some bs measurement in the 430s. just watch the swing and you’ll know it was longer than that. it was as if that ball had slept with his wife, mistress, and mother in the same night. violent.

They said it landed ten rows back in the second deck, but that’s incorrect usage. The word “landed” implies that it descended at some point, which it never did. Rather, it intercepted the tenth row of the second deck. It was a missile defense home run.

Interesting that you mention the good offense hurting Timmy
Maybe this is why so many good pitching teams have bad offenses…
Maybe
This is why our offense struggles some?
They have a bad inning, and before they know it, they’re batting again. The opposing pitcher gets on a groove, and we can’t snap out of it until the 7th inning or later…Dang starters!
Hmmm.

We needed a game like this to give our BP a rest
…and of course it was awesome watching us hit four jacks.
(Freeman’s HR was so long it almost counted for 2 HRs…it was certainly the longest I have seen in a while)
Agree...
I am glad I didn’t one part of O’Flaventersbrel tonight.

I hate being the debbie downer…but no ball has ever been hit as far as the the ball Pujols hit off of lidge…whatevr the distance quoted for that shot, you need to add the circumstnace of the earth, bc I thoroughly believe it traveled once around the earth and land back in the LF stands…I firmly beleive all disasters that have occurred in Brad Lidge’s life after that moment (and possibly some that occurred before that moment, due to quatum physics and the wave lines of time) are directly related to that blast.
That said Freeman hit the crap out of that ball. It’s always wonderful when no one on defense evens move…they just turn around to see where it lands…and thats what happened in this case.

I would also argue...
the shot that Barry Bonds hit off Troy Percival in the 2002 WS might have been the farthest. In the words of Tim Salmon…“that’s the hardest hit I’ve ever seen”…

I was going to make this comment. I have it bookmarked still:

that ball went so effing far… i refuse to acknowledge a ball can be hit harder than that.
and to reply above… we only have anecdotel evidence of Killebrew and mantle’s bomb…which to me is less convincing than video evidence of Pujols destroying a baseball. I am sure those balls were crushed, but i am a man who likes proof.

Well I was partially right
I was hoping the Kids would do well tonight, but they all pretty much did. Go! Braves! I’m kinda wasted right now in case Justin wants to argue.

I was on the road last night, driving I-75 and I-59 back to my hometown. I did listen to much of the game on radio affiliates in Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. What a novel thing, listening to baseball on the radio. It seems like a much more intimate medium. Don and Jim cracked wise, created good verbal images and proved their worth as radio broadcasters. I didn’t feel like I missed anything for lack of a visual component.
Now I just need to convince a station here to carry Giants games and I’d be set.

Wow
What a game! I especially loved Uggla starting the third inning two out no one on rally. I love those kinds of rallies! I know he didn’t do anything else, but the game was close till then, so you gotta give him some credit. I also love that Gonzales is on a tear! Wow! things are looking up offensively when our worst starting batters are starting to hit the ball. Very exciting. Can’t say enough about Freeman. Great fielding, hits HRs and singles, has great at-bats… this is just great!
