Braves' Martin Prado To Disabled List
This is quite a convoluted time line, best to just quote David O'Brien:
Braves standout Martin Prado landed on the 15-day disabled list Friday for a staph infection in his right calf.
The move came as a surprise to most, since the Braves had not mentioned it publicly after the infection was first discovered Tuesday when the team was in Florida.
The left fielder was cleared to play Tuesday night, then got hit in the left knee by a throw as he stole second base in the ninth inning.
Prado missed the past two games with what the Braves termed a contusion of the left knee, which was swollen when Prado awoke Wednesday. Prado said Thursday that he expected to return to the lineup Saturday or Sunday.
Neither the team nor Prado had said anything about the problem with his left calf, which apparently degenerated rapidly later Thursday. The Braves flew to Houston late Thursday after finishing a three-game series with the Marlins.
While Prado was in Atlanta being treated for the staph infection on Friday, the Braves were preparing for a four-game series against the Houston Astros that starts Friday.
This is a big blow to the Braves (duh!). Last year Atlanta was able to cover up some of these injuries with All-Star utility man Omar Infante. This year there doesn't seem to be anyone ready to step in and pick up the slack of two lineup regulars being on the disabled list (Prado and Jason Heyward). Add to that the lineup void that currently is Dan Uggla, and the Braves are playing with half an offense right now, not to mention Nate McLouth is also on the DL and not likely to return for at least another week.
This is the time when someone needs to step up <looks at second base>. The Braves struggles in the past week have been largely covered up by great pitching and playing a team that is struggling even worse than Atlanta (the Marlins). The Braves now head to Houston, and can hopefully take a few games from the Majors' worst team, though they'll have to do it with players who have spent more time on the Gwinnett Braves roster than the Atlanta Braves roster.
Brandon Hicks will be joining Atlanta from Gwinnett. He's shown pretty good power and patience at the plate lately, but I would imagine he'll be just another backup (on a team currently consisting of eight backups, and only four starters ... and the afore mention Dan Uggla).
After the Astros, the Braves play the Mets, Rangers, and Blue Jays on a nine game homestand. That could get pretty rough. Perhaps now is the time to make a trade for an outfielder, seeing as how the team's entire starting outfield is on the disabled list. Wow.

Is it just me or do the Braves consistently have one of the worst training staffs every year? This infection just seems like it could have been prevented.
I think it's just you.

Notice how the MARLINS staff discovered
Disagree strongly. The Marlins doctors, not the Braves discovered this. That’s a ridiculous indictment of the training staff. Also see this post: http://capitolavenueclub.com/?p=3062
Staph infections can't always be prevented. I had one years ago and it was simply because
I had a cut on my knee and went to visit someone in the hospital. Nothing I could have done about it.
Okay...
The infection is actually in his right calf.
Also, this:
The Braves struggles in the past week have been largely covered up by great pitching and playing a team that is struggling even worse than Atlanta (the Marlins).
seems to be the most negative way possible to look at the last few games. It seems to me that the great pitching you speak of is there just for this reason — to keep the other team from scoring less runs than your team. As far as the schedule, well, yeah, we are lucky to be playing a struggling team right now, but that sort of luck is part of the wonderful game we all love.
The way I look at it, the fact that we’ve gained ground on the Phils while “struggling” is a reason for hope and happiness and joy. Bring on the unicorns and the daisies!

All he's saying is...
The Braves’ winning ways are quite “soft,” since a major aspect of their game is completely lacking. A run of bad starts, and we could easily lose all that ground we just made up. Complete teams have different ways to win each night; we have exactly one (for right now): near-perfect pitching and defense.

dear lord we can't catch a break
we are getting destroyed by injuries

Destroyed?
Our team is only 2 games out from having the best record in baseball.
While I agree the injuries are bad and our offense is putrid (except for tonight), it’s not like Prado was sparking our team to 5+ runs a game. We weren’t scoring much with Prado. What’s the difference?

Who would you trade for in the outfield? Definitely don’t trade for a RF unless you Frank thinks Heyward can play center
I thought of someone that would take a whole lot but worth it, Carlos Gonzalez. 1% chance he gets traded but if you offered a deal around Teheran they’d be crazy not to look at it
by PhuckthePhillies on Jun 10, 2011 6:30 PM EDT reply actions
I wouldn't want him
If I was going to make a trade for someone, that would make a splash, I would definately call whoever is in charge of the Dodgers, and ask them what it would take to get Matt Kemp
"I still feel like I have something to offer, and the cynical fan can really kiss my ass. I really don’t care. There’s a bunch of true fans and the people who actually want to take the time to get to know me know who I am. The guy who sits in his mom’s basement and types on his mom’s computer, I couldn’t really care less about." - Chipper Jones
I love Kemp.
His new hustle would only be praised even more here, away from all the mess. JJ’s value is higher than ever if we wanted to take that road. Let’s get Kemp, the guy is an all-world talent who never played hard until this year and look at his numbers now.
I love phenoms. Some of my favorite include Frason Freeward, Bratt Rymes, and Isaaron Murrell.

As good of a prospect as Teheran is, CarGo is not a realistic return for a package build around Teheran. For one thing, a superstar position player is worth so much more than a pitcher. Additionally, CarGo has signed an extension so it’s not like the Rockies are selling him just so that they won’t lose him for nothing.

A package like Teheran,Minor,Bethancourt,Simmons would not be losing him for nothing.
Prado in LF, Cargo in CF, Heyward in RF. Braves then have best outfield in bigs.

It's out of the question...
CarGo is not going anywhere anytime soon. He’s not even on the table, and won’t be, for many years.
Find someone else, because CO isn’t picking up the phone on any deal involving him.
-C
It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
I honestly wouldn’t want him after looking at his splits from last year and that contract extension.

Then you must have some difficulty reading splits…
2010 sOPS+ (OPS+ relative to the league-average split)
Home: 204
Away: 117
So he’s 17% better than the league on the road and 104% better at home (obviously, Coors Field plays into this).
Yes, he does much worse away from Coors, but his much worse is still 17% better than most players do away from their home ballpark…and their away ballpark includes Coors Field while his does not.
-C
It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
i guess he is thinking
is 17% better worth that amount of money + what you trade for him
People are like at least I'm not that guy on stage. That guy on stage is like at least I'm not that guy in the looney bin. The guy in the looney bin are like at least I'm an orange
Is 104% better??
Sure, the 104% increase will go down in Turner, but the 17% increase will increase as well…look at Matt Holliday. Huge splits at Coors, and he’s still raking after the fact.
-C
It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
All this said...
He’s not going anywhere until that contract is up, more than likely. If he outperforms it, they keep him…if not, he’s untradeable.
Why CarGo got mentioned as a potential trade target is beyond me in the first place.
-C
It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
Yeah but we will be paying for the performance that he puts up while at Coors. Once again Do Not Want.

And through all the injuries and blown saves/leads from the bullpen and the Braves are still only 2 games back from Philly? Wow, I had no idea.
-Uggla NEEDS TO STEP UP!
-Heyward needs to get healthy and be the Heyward of last year
-McCann can’t get hurt
-Hold the fort till everyone gets healthy
by PhuckthePhillies on Jun 10, 2011 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions
it just goes to show...
how good this braves team is….best power hitter out (aka sucking)
second best hitter (McCann being first) out
Best overall player (including diversity) freshly on the DL
currently our best option in center (which needs to be addressed) is out
This team can be dangerous healthy and with Kemp patrolling center!
Wow. A staph infection. Somebody screwed up big time. And depending on what kind of staph it is, this could be serious. A friend of mine contracted staph after a knee replacement surgery, and it took him six months to recover.
As for a decent outfielder who might be available for not too much: Take a look at the Rangers’ Mitch Moreland and tell me what you think. He seems to be a spare part there, and the Rangers badly need relief pitching. Moreland can play all three outfield positions plus 1B.
"Some people give their bodies to science. I gave mine to baseball." -- Ron Hunt
Without speculating too much about his condition… probably just cellulitis. staph aureus(and presumably he has a community acquired MRSA infection) is something I see in the ER all the time. Probably resulted from the the same accident that caused the contusion to his left knee. Outpatient treatment if MRSA is suspected is 10 days of antibiotics. I’m sure the trainers/medical staff are all over it. He will be back to his old self in no time, just gotta let it heal.
No sense makes sense...C.M.

Somebody needs to tell Uggla to quit screwing around and start hitting the baseball. Period. Enough is enough. The guy he booted out of his position is gone for a while. Earn your keep.

My advice to him would be, “Don’t swing at anything. No matter how good it looks. Make them throw strikes. Maybe you can get a few walks.”
Better than NOTHING. As crazy as that sounds, he might actually get on-base. He has screwed himself in plenty of 3-1 counts, popping out, just trying to be Dan Uggla.

He’s horribly off balance. Your plan, it would cut out double plays!

lol
The only place Uggla hits the ball is straight up. And right at people. It’s uncanny.

Yea its getting increasingly difficult to imagine the light at the end of the tunnel for Uggla. We really need him to start impacting this lineup positively. But he is trending downward and beyond a hard hit ball the other night right to the LF he has been really impotent lately at the plate.
I’m thinking Bull Durham, when they started throwing bats in the locker room. Shock the bastard.

you really think it's that easy? That all someone has to do is tell him to start hitting and it
will just happen. The guy isn’t screwing around. He’s in a slump and is working hard to get out of it. This idea that it’s because he’s screwing around or a lack of effort on his part is just ridiculous.
Never thought
we’d be begging for McClouth to come back so much, but he’s much needed right now (along with Heyward obviously).
OF
Like to see both McLouth and Heyward tho ready and healthy.
I would like to see Gantrell play a week in LF, Stranger
things have been successful in the past and not much to lose.

This = awful
I dont really understand the callup of Hicks, don’t we already have Diory on the roster? How does that help us replace Martin at all? Very surprised that they didn’t bring Wilkin Ramirez back.
Wilkin or Gartrell should have been given a shot

This stinks...
But…Heyward should be back soon, Dan’s going to snap out of it eventually, Chipper and McCann are still playing, Freeman’s a beast, Schafer’s playing well, and Gonzo has been hitting well of late.
Hinske’s not trash, either.
While I’ll miss Prado, this isn’t a season ending injury. As I said above, it’s not like he was carrying the team offensively…Right now, it’s Freeman.
