Teheran, Vizcaino, Masters, Northcraft, And Cabrera Dominate And Simmons Extends Streak To 11 To Highlight Thursday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action

Every Braves affiliate received a fantastic effort from their starting pitcher, with Julio Teheran, Arodys Vizcaino, Chris Masters, Aaron Northcraft, and Mauricio Cabrera all dominating, while Lynchburg's Andrelton Simmons doubled to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

Gwinnett Braves 2, Toledo Mud Hens 0

  • Jose Constanza LF 1-3, BB, SB (13), .335 AVG
  • Ed Lucas 2B 2-5, RBI, SB (3), .210 AVG
  • Brandon Hicks SS 0-1, 3 BB, .252 AVG

  • Jairo Asencio 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 K, SV (8), 1.71 ERA

Most consider Julio Teheran to be the top pitching prospect in all of baseball, and tonight was a perfect example of why he's so highly regarded. The 20 year old righty equaled his career high by throwing 8 innings and racked up a season high 11 strikeouts, and he was able to do it with just 102 pitches. The Toledo lineup, which included a rehabbing Magglio Orgonez, had an average age of 29, a full 9 years older than Teheran. In 10 starts for Gwinnett, he has a 1.98 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. Brandon Hicks had 3 walks today, and in his last 7 games he's collected 7 of his 16 walks on the season. Ed Lucas broke a 0-13 stretch with a 2 hit game, but it's still been a rough year for him. Through 176 at bats the infielder is hitting just .210 with a .587 OPS and striking out in 30% of his at bats.

The G-Braves will look for the sweep Friday with Mike Minor taking the mound.

Mississippi Braves 1, Chattanooga Lookouts 7

Arodys Vizcaino keeps improving with each AA start, and in this one he only gave up 1 run over 5 innings. He did allow 3 walks, but he also struck out 5. In 3 starts with Mississippi he has a 4.50 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, and 9.0 K/9. Kenshin Kawakami pitched for the first time since April 17th, taking the loss while allowing 1 run in 1.1 innings. With Vizcaino joining the team, and 4 All-Stars filling out the rest of the rotation, Kawakami is going to have to pitch out of the bullpen. In AA. Willie Cabrera had 2 of the team's 4 hits on the night, extending his hitting streak to 5 games.

Randall Delgado will pitch for the M-Braves Friday.

Lynchburg Hillcats 1, Salem Red Sox 3

Andrelton Simmons is starting to show some pop, hitting a double for the third straight game, while extending his hitting streak to 11 games. He also stole his 9th base of the season, though he has been caught stealing 8 times. Todd Cunningham extended his own hitting streak to 6 games, continuing his solid season. He's showing leadoff hitting skills with a .371 OBP and 11 steals. Joe Leoanrd had a pair of hits in this one, including a double, but overall it's been a tough year for him, as the 22 year old is hitting just .242 with a .683 OPS. On the bright side he's taking plenty of walks, with a .326 OBP, and striking out at an acceptable rate, 20%. Chris Masters had a fantastic start, allowing just 1 run over 7 innings while striking out 9. Last season he tired down the stretch, but this year he came into Spring Training in fantastic shape, so hopefully he be able to avoid that kind of fatigue.

The Hillcats travel to Frederick Friday, with Matt Crim getting the start.

  • Jose Rosario 2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 0.00 ERA

Mauricio Cabrera is the top prospect on the DSL team, and the 17 year old had the best start of his young career today, allowing just 1 unearned run over 5 innings. There's a good chance the Braves will try to bring him to the US when the GCL season starts on June 20th. 18 year old Panamanian shortstop Luis Caballero had a pair of hits and a pair of stolen bases. Through 20 at bats, he's hitting .300 with a .391 OBP.
