Around SBN: So Let's Talk About Hulk Too, I Suppose

Youth Movement

Image and video hosting by TinyPic Craig Kimbrel, Kyle Drabek, and Micheal Pineda are showing that young pitchers can indeed dominate the game. Kimbrel, Atlanta's rookie closer and Billy Wagner's successor, shows an explosive fastball that typically reahes 97mph, and has ridiculous k/9 ratio. Son of former CY young winner Doug, Kyle Drabek is showing an impessive 4.50 era while pitching in the AL East. And the tripple digit, yes i mean 100+mph throwing Micheal Pineda has an absurd 39ks this year while owninmg his impressive 2.58 era. All of theese pitchers should be great fantasy contrubuters for years to come. (I am doing posts for my CBS fantasy baseball league and i would like to post here as well, what do you all think?

AHHHH! My eyes!!!

Also, the Braves don’t have any young talent. Furman Bisher said as much…

The young guys on the 2011 Braves are the very ones that were in the minors in 09 – so, I was just pointing out how dumb Bisher was to say what he said.

And yes, dude, those pictures are terrible! lol

by Josh Barnett on May 9, 2011 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not sure if I would have picked Drabek to support the argument. Hanson probably would have been a better choice, as would Price, Lincecum, etc. All of those guys are young too.

Dear Lord

Please learn how to put photos together, use this if you want.

Drabek is not the best example out there, also you check your spelling before you post people will be more likely to listen to your opinion if you use proper spelling and grammar. It is a good start though, keep working at it and you will get better.

thanks, and i can handle your comments, i used drabek because of his rookie status.

by Josh Barnett on May 9, 2011 11:49 PM EDT reply actions

Being a rookie is not the best choice, as you probably figured out.

Brooks Conrad was a rookie last year, but he was like 30 and had been in the minors for awhile.

This isn’t really a fanpost in that it doesn’t relay any new information or ideas and it barely relates to the Braves. I’ll leave it up as an example but something this barren that adds nothing to the general discussion of Braves baseball isn’t really what we’re looking for in a fanpost.

I hope you understand that I'm not exactly adament about it...

like the smackoff thing in another thread, it’s something I enjoy needling you about, but if you never post it, I don’t really care. And in fact, I’d almost rather you don’t because then I couldn’t give you crap for it, and according to the latest offer, I’d have to buy your book then too (which I’m still planning on doing someday, I swear). Also, I’ve got the satisfaction of knowing I called that one right, although it doesn’t mean much balanced all the calls I’ve made wrong. But at least I called that one right, Feliz and Andrus an All Star in 3 years? Too easy.

by Mr. Sanchez on May 10, 2011 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Guess it’s a good thing you got it in the first year, Feliz is gonna end up having TJ before the year is out and Andrus can only bank on one year where all the other AL SS are as bad with the bat as he is.

Don't be so quick...

now that they’ve been deemed All Stars, especially at a young age, they get the name recognition bump that goes with it for future All Star selections. Plus in Andrus’ case, he’s turning into a nifty little base stealer, with 11 already, and can raise his profile by being near the top of the leaderboard in that stat.

And the days of the slugging SS are over. We’ve got Hanley and Tulo right now, and while some have potential (Drew, Yunel, etc) they all seem to go through long droughts too. And there doesn’t seem to be a new crop of Hanley, Tulo, or ARod, Nomar, Tejada, etc on the way up either. Maybe guys like Salcedo, etc are on the way in the next 5 years, but personally, I think we’re going back to the days where SS were mostly glove men, and any with a decent bat are a luxury.

In what world does Andrus have a decent bat??

Not the real world, obviously, but perhaps there are others…

by cthabeerman on May 10, 2011 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Where did I say Andrus had a decent bat?....

I said “any with a decent bat are a luxury”, meaning guys like Andrus and Sea Bass are the rule, with Hanley or Tulo a rare exception at the position. Unlike a few years back when it seemed every SS could be top half of the order bats; Renteria, Tejada, ARod, Jeter, Nomar, Furcal, etc.

Also on Andrus specifically, he’ll never have much power, but he seems to be settling around .265-270 as a hitter (which I’d consider a decent average), and if he can get on at the .340+ clip he had last year, instead of the .320s as a rookie and so far this year, I think Andrus could BECOME a decent offensive player. .270/.350, with 30-40+ steals at a good % (meaning the 75-80+% metrics say is needed to be valuable), I’d consider that player to be a decent offensive player.

Because in order to be an all-star

you must hit 20 HR in the first half? you seem to be saying he will not be able to become an all star again until he does so and brings his BA over .300, which is total crap. He can, and most likely will, frequent the ASG riding just his glove and legs. Hell Yadier Molina doesn’t even have the legs and he started two straight All Star Games.

Molina started because the people in St. Louis are fanatical about voting.

so it has nothing to do

with the fact that hes one of the best defensive catchers of the decade? If you want to make the argument that he wont get voted in because Texas fans dont vote as much, then that’s something different.

That would be my argument yes, that Andrus won’t get the insane we vote too much because we love our players who really aren’t that good vote like Molina gets every year.

well then

why didnt you say that from the start? that has nothing to do with his personal abilities as a shortstop but relates to the way that the voting system is, and how small market teams get poorly represented at the all star game. Plus, the whole

we vote too much because we love our players who really aren’t that good vote
thing is not true, or else every all star game would be StLouis/Philly vs Boston/NewYork.

It’s totally true. All those guys have a ton of undeserving players end up 2nd or 3rd in the voting at the various positions every year. There are 30 teams, even the most fanatical fanbases can’t overcome that many other voters.

On the OP

An “impressive” 4.50 ERA? I want you playing in every one of my fantasy leagues if you think anything resembling a 4.50 is impressive.

2010 was the largest influence of young talent the game has seen in over a decade in one season. 2011 looks to bring some young studs up, but nowhere near the same talent level. Also, many of the best players arriving on the scene this year are OLDER than ones who debuted last season or even 2009. A better discussion on “youth movement” would be something to the effect of an age-related all star team. Here’s a list of those who are still pre-prime (< 27 years old) as of opening day 2011:

C – Buster Posey (was OUT!), SF; Carlos Santana, Cle; Alex Avila, Det; Wilson Ramos, Was
1B – Prince Fielder, Mil; Eric Hosmer, KC; Freddie Freeman, Atl; Justin Smoak, Sea; Ike Davis, NYM; Billy Butler, KC; Mitch Moreland, Tex
2B – Neil Walker, Pit; Gordon Beckham, ChW; Danny Espinosa, Was
3B – Evan Longoria, TB; Ryan Zimmerman, Was; Pablo Sandoval, SF; Chase Headley, SD; Pedro Alvarez, Pit; Danny Valencia, Min
SS – Troy Tulowitzki, Col; Starlin Castro, ChC; Asdrubal Cabrera, Cle; Elvis Andrus, Tex; Ian Desmond, Was; Erick Aybar, LAA
OF – Justin Upton, Ari; Matt Kemp, LAD; Jason Heyward, Atl; Colby Rasmus, StL; Mike Stanton, Fla; Adam Jones, Bal; Andrew McCutchen, Pit; Jose Tabata, Pit; Jay Bruce, Cin; Carlos Gonzalez, Col
SP – David Price, TB; Jeremy Hellickson, TB; Ricky Romero, Tor; Brandon Morrow, Tor; Zach Britton, Bal; Justin Masterson, Cle; Max Scherzer, Det; John Danks, ChW; Brett Anderson, Oak; Gio Gonzalez, Oak; Trevor Cahill, Oak; Felix Hernandez, Sea; Michael Pineda, Sea; Tommy Hanson, Atl; Brandon Beachy, Atl; Jair Jurrjens, Atl; Jordan Zimmerman, Was; Jaime Garcia, StL; Yovani Gallardo, Mil; Bud Norris, Hou; Jhoulys Chacin, Col; Matt Cain, SF; Clayton Kershaw, LAD; Chad Billingsley, LAD; Ian Kennedy, Ari; Dan Hudson, Ari; Mat Latos, SD
RP – Joba Chamberlain, NYY; Daniel Bard, Bos; Chris Perez, Cle; Aaron Crow, KC; Louis Coleman, KC; Jeremy Jeffress, KC; Tim Collins, KC; Chris Sale, ChW; Jordan Walden, LAA; Neftali Feliz, Tex; Antonio Bastardo, Phi; Craig Kimbrel, Atl; Johnny Venters, Atl; Eric O’Flaherty, Atl; Drew Storen, Was; Tyler Clippard, Was; Ernesto Frieri, SD

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
