Shortstops Pastornicky And Simmons Lead The Way In Friday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action
Tyler Pastornicky had a pair of hits, while Andrelton Simmons and Todd Cunningham extended their hitting streaks and Edward Salcedo extended his on base streak, but all 4 of Atlanta's affiliates lost tonight.
Gwinnett Braves 5, Rochester Red Wings 7
- Jose Constanza CF 2-5, .327 AVG
- Jordan Schafer DH 1-5, 2B, RBI, .257 AVG
- Mauro Gomez 1B 1-4, HR (5), RBI, BB, .383 AVG
- Stefan Gartrell RF 1-4, HR (4), RBI, .224 AVG
- Wilkin Castillo C 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, .196 AVG
- Rodrigo Lopez 6 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 4 BB, 6 K, 2.11 ERA
After RBI doubles by Wilkin Castillo and Jordan Schafer put the Braves up by 1 in the top of the 9th, Jairo Asencio was in line for the win, but he gave up a walkoff 3 run homer to Steve Singleton and instead took the loss. Jose Constanza picked up a couple of singles and has a .361 on base percentage this season. Mauro Gomez clubbed out his fifth homer of th eseason and is slugging .660 so far.
Yohan Flande gets the spot start against the Red Wings tomorrow.
Mississippi Braves 1, Chattanooga Lookouts 3
- Tyler Pastornicky SS 2-3, BB, .306 AVG
- Jordan Kreke 2B 2-4, .257 AVG
- JJ Hoover 5 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 3 BB, 6 K, 2.34 ERA
- Billy Bullock 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 K, 6.94 ERA
This was probably JJ Hoover's worst start of the year and he still didn't really deserve to take the loss, but his offense could only muster 6 hits for him, 4 coming from Tyler Pastornicky and Jordan Kreke. In his last 10 games, Pastornicky has hit .366 with a .400 OPB and a .961 OPS. Billy Bullock needed just 11 pitches to strike out the side in the 9th. In his last 5 appearances he's thrown 5 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and 1 walk while striking out 7.
Tim Gustafson will toe the rubber Saturday night for the M-Braves.
Lynchburg Hillcats 5, Winston-salem Dash 6
- Todd Cunningham CF 3-4, BB, .277 AVG
- Andrelton Simmons SS 2-5, RBI, SB (5), .347 AVG
- Joe Terdoslavich 1B 1-3, HR (8), RBI, BB, .241 AVG
- Braeden Schlehuber 2-4, 2B, HR (1), 2 RBI, .286 AVG
- Zeke Spruill 6 IP, 6 ER, 9 H, 1 BB, 8 K, 3.44 ERA
Zeke Spruill struck out 8 and walked just 1 over 6 innings, but he also gave up 9 hits and 6 runs, the first start he's struggled in this season. Andrelton Simmons extended his hitting streak to 11 games and he's hit .476 with a 1.059 OPS in that span. Todd Cunningham had 3 hits, extending his own hitting streak to 5 games, going 11-19 with 3 walks in those games. After a rough start, Braeden Schlehuber has turned things around. For the season he has a .286 average and a .791 OPS in 56 at bats, and during his 4 game hitting streak he's gone 8-15 with 4 doubles and a homer. Joe Terdoslavich hit his league leading eight home run and 13 of his 21 hits this year have gone for extra bases.
Cory Rasmus will take on the Dash tomorrow.
Rome Braves 0, Savannah Sand Gnats 2
- Edward Salcedo SS 1-4, 2B, .284 AVG
- Christian Bethancourt C 2-3, .214 AVG
- Caleb Brewer 7 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 K, 2.95 ERA
Caleb Brewer had arguably his best start of the year, allowing just 2 walks and 4 hits over 7 innings, but he took the loss as his offense just couldn't put any runs on the board. Edward Salcedo his a double, making it 21 straight games that he's reached base by either a walk or a hit. There's only been on game all year that he's failed to reach base and his .371 OBP is outstanding.
Austrailan lefty Steve Kent gets the Saturday start for the R-Braves.

Simmons looks great right now, but will he have more extra-base hits in the future? I know he plays great defense, but a little more pop would be great so that he doesn’t have to sustain such a high batting average in order to be an above average hitter.
He also doesn’t have many walks. It’s not a problem right now while he’s hitting for the high average, a lot of guys don’t get walks during hitting streaks, but it’s kind of a general trend for him.
I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it:

And I wonder how that trend holds when he moves up a level...
against better pitchers? Does a flaw become exposed, or is he just that good at making contact?

a mere 21 K in the 334 AB of his professional baseball career to date suggests he’s pretty good at making contact.
I'd like to see him do that in AA though...
that’s what I’m saying. He’s somewhat old for the levels he’s been at, even A+ now, and those pitchers aren’t known for having multiple pitches or good breaking stuff. He isn’t likely to be AS GOOD at making contact as he moves up, so just how big of a problem is this lack of walks? I don’t think we’ll know until he moves up.

Kind of my point...
A/A+ ball pitchers may not be able to expose flaws, such as a French style desire to swing at everything no matter how far off the plate it is. It’s still a small sample, but if Simmons can still be hitting well over .300 through June, I’d be ready to see just how good he is at the plate against better pitchers.

Cunningham is finally coming around with the bat. While I’m not crazy about him, I don’t think he’s as big a waste of a pick as some others have claimed. Perhaps he doesn’t have big time upside, but could be a useful fourth outfielder.
I think he’s definitely one of those guys you have to see over a period of time to fully appreciate.

I take it the idea of him as a utility player with IF ability
has been scrapped?
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
He has yet to play the infield as a pro and I didn’t see him taking any balls there in ST. I feel like they’ve probably tabled that idea.

It's great that
Even when our starts are bad they’re actually good. 8/1 K/BB ratio? I’ll take that every day, especially for a prospect

From BA hot sheet chat:
Eddie (St Pete): Paul Clemens has been impressive so far in Mississippi (outside of his walk rate), but he has been overshadowed by the 3 other Braves pitching prospects there. Does he have the stuff to reach The Show and what’s your opinion on his future?
Jim Shonerd: Clemens does have a major league arm but has always been plagued inconsistency. If his changeup develops and, as you mention, if throws enough strikes, he could make for a mid-rotation starter. He could also make it as a reliever, a role he’s done before, if the changeup doesn’t come along.
Braves’ players’ favorite quote after every game: "You have to tip your cap to (insert opposing pitcher’s name) for pitching a great game. "
I was at the Hillcats and Dash game last night...
I do not keep up with the Braves farm system too well and I was wondering which players from the Hillcats look like they will be playing in Braves uniforms someday? I know Andrelton Simmons, Joseph Terdoslavich(Terd), and Cunningham looked good I also thought L.V. Ware did decnent.
Mauro Gomez
after 102 PA, he is now sporting a cool 1.091 OPS.
and although this is his 1st year in AAA, he also put up very solid power numbers in Bakersfield (A+) in ’09 and Pearl (AA) last year.
so, if Mather continues to give us nothing offensively, I think he and Gomez may be switching spots in another few weeks.
This
And I don’t care if he only plays 1B(and he’s not as bad as Canizares was) he has power off the bench and he’s RH if he tanks oh well no harm he can’t be worse than Mather!
If Conrad only PH why not send Gomez up as primarily as a PH? Then assuming Teheran goes back down after his start, move Diory up and have him be the primary back up SS/2B.
If Mather continues to show nothing at the plate, I’d consider Gartrell, Schafer or Ramirez even though 2/3 probably need a full year at Triple A

Simmons continues to rake, Salcedo is an OBP Machine, and I hope Betancourt is starting to wake up.
