Braves Relief Prospect Stephen Marek To Have Tommy John Surgery
Per the AJC, we now know the result of Braves relief prospect Stephen Marek's appearance on the disabled list last week:
Marek will undergo "Tommy John" surgery on Wednesday in Birmingham performed by Dr. James Andrews, a surgery that typically requires a 12-month recovery. Kemp said Marek found out about his diagnosis late Thursday.
"I talked to him and he was really upbeat about it," Kemp said. "He knows it’s a process. He’ll make the most of it and get back healthy."
Marek has a lot of fans on this site and throughout Braves Country, and I wish him a successful recovery.
This is no doubt a bit of a blow to our relief depth in the minors, which has already taken a hit with the news that Peter Moylan may be lost for most of the season with back surgery.
Jairo Asencio, Juan Abreu, and (gulp) Scott Proctor now represent the immediate minor league depth for the Braves relief corps.

Well
At least we have an actual need to fill at the deadline now.
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

I now twitter as @junkstats and blog about made-up stats and general baseball stuff at JunkStats.
Paging Kris Medlen.
Your return in August would be much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Braves Country
Isn’t Medlen just technically “healthy” in August? Won’t he still need to build back up to actually pitch in games, or his August his game ready timeline?
Game ready by August.
Part of the inclusion in that 12 month window is strengthening to game shape. Some are in game shape even quicker. Instills false sense of hope
"C'mon Chip!"
This is really bad news.
Outside of Kimbrel, Moylan and Marek are probably our two most talented right-handed relievers. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Frank Wren starts looking for a bullpen arm or two here in the next few weeks.

But Sherrill and Linebrink were horrible signings I tell ya, horrible...
we’ve got so much bullpen depth without them clogging up the works.
Oh, wait, no we don’t.

I would cream my pants.

Wow, I had no idea Mike Adams had gotten good.
I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it:

Good doesn't even begin to describe it...
he’s been arguably the best in the business since arriving in San Diego. His numbers are amazing.

This sucks.
It really sucks for the team, but especially sucks for Marek. He’s 27 with stellar minor league numbers, but he may not even get to the majors after elbow surgery.
That Heyward guy is pretty good.

Unwarranted cynicism my friend!
The testimony of many TJ pitchers is that the 12 month recovery/conditioning time rejuvenates them. Some pitchers return with added velocity. Almost all reacquire their original durability.
"C'mon Chip!"
And 10-15% are never the same again.

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
So sending Tex to the Angels may be now completely wasted?
Kotchman, flipped for laRoche and then nothing.
Marek, wasted in the minors, got hurt, and then nothing?
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
This is certainly possible.
That sort of thing happens, though. We’ve been on the right side of enough deals to acknowledge that.

Certainly...
and if we had just let Tex walk, who knows if the draft picks even give us that much, including if we’d taken Trout.
I’m more pissed about the original deal. WE DIDN’T HAVE ENOUGH PITCHING ANYWAY SCHUERHOLZ!!!!!!!!!
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
pissed is the wrong word of course...
but I’m sure you’ll understand, -C.

I won't at all be disappointed when..
Medlen comes back ready in August, Moylan has his surgery and is back in three months, and Billy Wagner decides “you know what, I’ll pitch the last two months for a chance at a ring.” ;-) It could happen…

Horses might fly...
But I’ve never seen it.
Moylan possibly (I still don’t have enough info to have any clue exactly how long he’ll be gone), I think a lot of people are expecting Medlen back before he will be, and there’s maybe a 1-3% shot of Wagner coming back. I would lean towards none before slim.

obviously that one is wishful..
News about Moylan seems to be ever-changing. I’ve seen things from season over, to career over, to could be back in three months..
