gondee made a twitter joke about Lowe pitching today against the ‘Brew Crew’ following his DUI incident. Medlen stood up for his teammate and dissed gondee for the effort. gondee basically asked Meds which was worse: his joke or the DUI.

In short...

Kris: Everyone is Gonna be drunk off there (sic) asses!

Gondee: Joke about Lowe pitching.

Kris: Gondeee, you, sir, are a fucking douchebag.

Gondeee: Lowe drinking and driving is kinda douchey.

Kris: I must defend the team!

Gondeee: Apologies, but Lowe must expect some backlash from being a moron.

I paraphrased most of that, but you get the point.

agreed, Medlen’s comment makes me think Lowe really wasn’t drunk; that’s why I found it interesting. Other than that tweet there’s been no indication whatsoever of Lowe’s level of intoxication.

Well, you know

Except for the whole failing the sobriety test and refusing the breathalyzer and the cop smelling alcohol.

Sure, none of those are conclusive. But neither is Medlen saying he wasnt drunk. Personally, Id believe the cop over one of DLowe’s friends, but that’s just me.

Memo to Medlen

If you don’t want to be the brunt of somebody’s joke — Comedy Channel, Letterman, or even Talking Chop — don’t do something stupid or embarrassing that puts your face into the news… other than sports segments. In the past two weeks, you’ve seen this with both Lowe and Blackjack.

Remember: you’re a public athlete. Like it or not, people are watching. Sorry about that, but that’s the rub when you excel at your craft enough to be up there with the best in the world.

Kind of a poor choice of words for Meds to talk about being drunk and Lowe in the same tweet.

I agree

Society’s in a strange crossroads right now, with the blurred lines between “celebrity” and “common,” because with social media platforms like twitter, all are communicating with one another with no distinction except by those who acknowledge and recognize it.

What I think is kind of wrong is the backpedaling PR damage control that the Steelers had to do, because of the opinions of their running back. Instead of apologizing, I kind of wish they had just said something along the lines of “The Steelers would like to explain that we have nothing to do with what he thinks.”

But at the same time, if athletes on twitter weren’t put on such pedestals by the media and the people, the Steelers wouldn’t have had to.

It’s kind of fascinating in a sad way just how many times on SportsCenter or just the news in general, that something someone of a certain status said on Twitter is actually discussed.

This is an interesting conversation.

I have always been fascinated with stories about athletes’, celebrities’, etc. daily lives.

There are entire publications surrounding where celebs visit, what they eat, what they where, etc. Why do we as a society care?

Why should I buy a certain razor because my favorite athlete uses it, too?

Yet, advertising and the above magazines (and stupid sites like TMZ) make a killing feeding off of the mundane interests of society.

Fascinating stuff.

I’ve asked why we care for years. Channels like E! are so unnecessary yet people love them. It’s not acting, singing, or whatever these celebrities do well, it’s just talking about them!

I also follow no athletes on twitter, because they provide no use to me at all. The only one I follow is LoMo because he’s funny as shit.

As I said, it’s a strange crossroads of society trying to figure out the rules of supposed celebrities using the same channels of mass communication that the common public is using. I figure until the unwritten rules begin to level out, things like this will happen frequently.

They're American "Royalty"

That’s why. We’ve still got some tribal behavior.
Good or bad. Celebrities, athletes, and politicians are our version of royalty. We treat them like alpha males/females b/c our communities exist on the internet and TV and they just happen to be on all those networks all the time. Look at TalkingChop. Whether or not you think you glorify them, you still talk about them, and in this day-and-age, that’s close enough.

Just a thought…I happen to also really like psychology as well as the Atlanta Braves.

Morton hit Heyward with an offspeed pitch. Early indication is that the baseball survived the impact.

by award6 on May 4, 2011 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree...

But, as we see with Roger McDowell, actions by coaches and players affect the public’s perception, fairly or not, of the organization.

There were some on here who wanted McDowell fired for what happened in SF. While both the Mendenhall and Medlen Tweets can be distinguished from the McDowell incident due to each of them not being on the field, they are still making comments that cast a negative light on the Steelers and Braves, respectively.

Personally, I don’t give a flip, for I realize that there are many personalities and opinions in professional sports, but some do care.

And, Doghnut, I value your opinion. Where should I eat lunch?

That McDowell was (allegedly) attacking someone verbally, whereas Mendenhall was just stating an opinion.

I really don’t have a problem with what Mendenhall said. His opinion, as similar to tons of Americans, is that Bush knocked down the towers. I don’t buy any of the conspiracies or anything of the sort, but his opinion is his opinion. Even so, bin Laden did a lot of other terrible things outside of 9/11 and Mendenhall probably isn’t educated on those matters and should have kept quiet.

I do not think athletes anyone should use Twitter.

FTFY. Seriously, that site does so much more harm than good. Reporters have started breaking stories there, so you end up with something like “US kills Osama in raid” and are left to wonder whether they’re having fun at your expense or if there’s a real story. They leave you clamoring for details. Athletes and other public figures shoot their mouths off (see Carrey, Jim and Gottfried, Gilbert) with disastrous results. Some extra from Glee tweeted a spoiler from an upcoming episode and the producers basically said they’ll make sure she never gets another gig.

And if you set all that aside, there are the normal people that feel it necessary to tell you exactly when they’re showering, how hopping the club is, or that their store is out of their favorite cereal so they’re so upset. Where’s the utility? Those little 140 character pieces of nothing ruin careers and don’t produce anything positive that isn’t already found in real stories/articles, etc., so let’s just be done with it already.

I respectfully disagree. News outlets are a place for breaking news. It’s annoying as hell to basically have a headline tweeted and then wait around for details somewhere else later on. As far as “quick analysis” goes, it may be for interesting tidbits or one-liners, but just like with news stories the best analysis comes with details, which twitter just doesn’t have room for. It offers nothing in terms of networking that you couldn’t find on a place like facebook or linkedin, but it’s offering in that regard is more shallow than these other outlets. It doesn’t add anything of value, it just produces more of the same on a separate network.

There are exceptions to every rule, and I’m certainly not the kind of douche that would disparage any Twitter-based success you might have, but as a general rule it seems to do more harm than good.

It offers links to articles following the headlines. Every writer knows how to do this correctly. If they just tweet news and don’t have a link attached to it, they aren’t worth much because their site gets no hits.

Facebook invented twitter...

in alot of ways. It’s hard to deny that. We’ve always been able to put little snippets of our lives into FB. I feel it’s what spawned Twitter. Unless I’m horribly misguided and missed a string of time being over here in the black hole of technology (England)

Yeah, you're missing some of the history.

Twitter came out in around 2006. Facebook first got big in, what, 2003 or so? It had “the Wall,” which still exists, but it had no concept of publishing information in the way that Twitter does for several years – in fact, most of the recent redesigns of Facebook have been done with the intent of making it “more like Twitter.”

Facebook’s original intent was to be sort of a “living yearbook…” that gradually morphed into a well-defined sort of MySpace. It was only after Twitter became really popular that Facebook started adopting the “What’s on your mind?” approach that they follow now. They’re trying to imitate Twitter, they didn’t invent it.

If you’re insinuating that Facebook inspired Twitter, that is absolutely preposterous. The two didn’t even do remotely the same thing until well after Twitter became popular.

The status updates on FB were around before Twitter, and Twitter is essentially just status updates. Sure, Twitter has done it better, which has in turn made FB change how they do status updates, but it seems pretty clear that Twitter was heavily influenced by FB. When Twitter was first getting popular that’s how I’d describe it to people, “It’s like if you got on FB but all you could do was post and read statuses.”

I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it:

The status updates on FB

weren’t really status updates, so much as posting on your own wall. They didn’t have the whole “News Feed” functionality until September of ’06… whereas Twitter first became popular when it was used extensively at SXSW in the summer of ’06.

Twitter was actually inspired by texting, not by Facebook or any other social networking service. When it was first developed, it was viewed as a service, not a website – it was going to be a “behind-the-scenes” service for allowing you to broadcast text messages to people using a subscriber mode – that is, I know that you only see my updates if you want to see them, not just because I want to send them. The explosive use of the service – and the innovative ways in which it’s been used – have led to lots of changes not only in Twitter, but also directly in Facebook. Several of the views and features you see in Facebook now were directly inspired by Twitter, and not the other way around.

I understand how this can seem to have gone the other way – where Facebook inspired Twitter – because Facebook became widely popular well before Twitter did, and by then there’d already been a lot of “keeping up with the Johnsons” going on.

Wow.

Aside from the fact that this is exactly what people used to say about blogs (good thing we quit using those, eh?), it’s remarkably ignorant of how a service like Twitter is actually utilized. Yeah, there are a few people who use it to tell you when they’re using the restroom or how awesome that sandwich just was… but they don’t stick around long, because what they say doesn’t generate any real interest.

I'm kind of with Medlen on this one, at least on defending Lowe

I thought gondeee’s joke was funny, and he should stand by it. When Derek Lowe was caught allegedly racing down Peachtree after having too much to drink, he became fair game for DUI jokes. (See: every late night comedian joke about every public person getting caught doing something illegal.)

At the same time, Medlen is totally right to stick up for his boy D. Lowe. Innocent until proven guilty. He wouldn’t be the first person to be pulled over speeding and with the smell of alcohol, yet not be under the influence. It’s not illegal to have a couple beers and then drive. It’s illegal to have a couple of beers and then drive under the influence.

That said, I don’t think there’s any question that Medlen shouldn’t be lashing out at fans as “fucking douchebags.” But that’s a different issue. i suppose one could argue that gondeee, as the voice for a largely read Braves blog and with a press pass, has a different responsibility than the rest of us when it comes to making jokes.

Which, in my opinion, is better than if it was just a fan.

They’re both professionals in related industries…both should have acted more professionally. Even if it’s just a joke, and came from the “fan” side of the business, it’s just not a wise move, imo.

Having worked in as a sports writer, I imagine gondee will have an extremely hard time getting anything of value from Lowe in the future. And Lowe probably doesn’t speak with Gondee, so maybe that doesn’t matter too much by itself. But it’s a burned bridge, and that certainly won’t be helpful to gondee when he speaks with other players who have heard of this tweet.

Consider all the other players that gondee already does contact with (esp. minor leaguers, etc.), on a friendly or professional basis…will they now be more guarded in what they say because they think that one day gondee will either criticize or make jokes of them?? Maybe they’ll look at him differently, maybe they won’t.

From the athlete’s perspective, all they want is to be treated fairly. Regardless of whether Lowe was in the wrong (which has yet to be proven either way, legally), treat the issue as a professional matter and extend them the same courtesy you would a player that hasn’t put himself in hot water. And if you make fun of their friends and teammates, they’re probably not going to be happy with that, or you…people have long memories, so a punchline just isn’t worth the risk.

With all this said, I’ll reiterate that Medlen was in the wrong as well. But that’s what happens when someone takes a shot at your teammate…athletes will stick up for each other, even if it’s a bit irrational to do so. As for his other tweets, well, they probably weren’t too well thought-out, but that’s another issue entirely.

People make mistakes, which is how this whole mess began anyway. This is just the pile-on that occurs after such an incident. Ugly, not too bright, but sometimes inevitable…

Thought this was spot on. If gondee, as a blogger, wants the site and his blogging career to be taken seriously by the players then this conduct should not occur. It comes across as TMZ style antagonizing and not anywhere close to respectable or meaningful coverage of a team or its players (even if they make mistakes).

Why not

He does, goes to the Phillies who need bullpen help, and then covertly converts 55 innings of solid long relief, but under the radar, he’s accumulating a 1.6 HR/9 rate suspiciously against NL East rivals, with each poorly timed homer costing the Phillies games, and then when he’s waived in August, the Braves pick him back up in September, and he delivers solid relief en route to a division title. After he bashes Ryan Howard with a tire iron in the leg.

Head scratcher...

So it was all I could do not to reply to Medlen and say something about wanting the number for Gloria Allred. Of course I would never invite something like this, but the original joke (whether you think it was a joke or not) is right in line with many other things I’ve tweeted. For instance:

“I wonder if Derek Lowe is enjoying “bark in the park” day with some hair of the dog."
“D-Loweded story updated with official Braves statement”
""A Latino guy, an Asian guy, a black guy, and 3 white guys all walk into a bar"… complete this joke twitter…"

Clearly my mistake here was to reply to him with his @KrisMedlen in the tweet, which makes it appear as if I’m directing the response towards him, when I was actually just tweeting something I found to be hilarious (though clearly not everyone does), which piggybacked off something he said.

Just to clarify here, I do not have a press pass for the Braves. I’ve been trying like hell to cover them in person for the past two years, but MLB’s policy on bloggers covering teams is a big fat NO. I’m trying to convince the Braves otherwise, and I’m certain this incident will help in that regard …. . Even though my assertion is that the third-largest online site (behind AJC and Braves.com) for Braves news should be represented in some way at some games.

Anyway, I’m a Meds fan, and I apologized to him in a DM. I also told him that I know it’s been a rough time for you guys and the fans, and joking helps me get through it. Quite often my jokes are in very poor taste, yet still I persevere.

Your joke was well-played because of Kris’s ridiculous “gettin’ drunk” tweet with the Brewers. Not a wise thing to say ess than a week after his teammate and our “ace” got a DUI.

P.S. Sorry I passed along bad info about you having a press pass. I read that somewhere and assumed it was true. Like you said, it seems insane to deny access to a publication with so many Braves readers. Their policy will change eventually though, I’m sure.

The funny thing is that people on this site will dis the Braves constantly, talking about everything they feel they do poorly, even going as far as making fun of their hairstyles (Escobar’s frosted tips), but nobody thinks much of it because they think of it as just writing on a blog. The difference in this situation was that gondeee’s remark was made directly to a player, even if it was about a different player, so everyone looks at that and says, man, you screwed up, but they don’t think about all the times they’ve talked players down on the site here.

It makes everyone here look bad, and in the event that any blogger here wanted to be taken seriously enough to maybe get a player interview on the site or anything of the sort in the future, that chance has been seriously dented. gondee should be vilified for this, and he deserved the smack down he got from Medlen. Medlen could have ignored him and/ or not posted about the “being drunk” all together, but gondee tried to make a funny and got burned by it.

I’m pretty sure Gondee is a bit more than a TC staple, and I’m also fairly certain that he has made a name for himself.

The man just spear-headed the #1 Braves 2011 season magazine, runs the largest Braves blog in the interwebs, interviews players all of the time, is interviewed by other team’s media about the Braves, etc.

All of that may be and is probably true. That’s why I don’t understand why gondee would alienate himself from future communication with the team by making bad jokes/comments publicly and with his blogger handle. If blogs are trying to compete with the beats to gain team and player access, it is my opinion that this manner is absolutely the wrong way to go about it. Unless of course, you abide by the TMZ method of journalism that any attention is good attention. In that case, things are looking up for gondee. I don’t know, just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Thanks for responding to what I said.

You seem more angry than necessary about this.

If I seem angry, it’s because you do not understand my ire of blabbermouthing, especially when in a position of professional blogger, reporter, journalist, etc. Everyone is welcomed an opinion and gondee’s is more educated than many of ours, and he shouldn’t (in MY opinion) fall prey to the temptation of making himself out to be just another snarky fan. The joke being funny is only a matter of subjective opinion. You and others thought it was HIgh-larious while I assume others thought it was ridiculously uncalled for.

I think your ire is a bit misguided...

Not to really throw myself in here but everyone says things they don’t always mean. It doesn’t make them a villian and it doesn’t make them right. You’re asking for the head of our lead blogger and quite honestly, someone who puts alot of time and effort into making this blog respectable and meaningful. One comment on twitter will not end his career and your hard line stance on this, while it is your opinion, it misguided.

I will go ahead and respond to your response to Justin as well.

In todays day and age, people have the ability to do things and say things in ways they never had before. We are emotional creatures and everyone can say things they don’t mean and in our digital age, even though Gondeee felt bad about it, and apologized, it doesn’t make it right but he can’t unsay it… hopefully he learns from it but it doesn’t mean he will be blacklisted by the braves for making an ill timed joke. He apologized, he’s a professional and life will go on.

I dont know if anyone has mentioned it

But the joke was kinda funny. I mean, I would’ve laughed if one of my friends had made it. Probably not appropriate for Twitter, but still funny.

I lol’d.

By the way, did anyone catch ESPN reading the tweet from some athlete last night? The tweet said “LOL” and when the sports anchor read that, he said “Lots of laughs.”

It reminded me of Phil Dunfy telling us all what “WTF” meant – Why The Face?

Weird

I actually remember having a debate with a friend in middle school about ‘lol’. Internet speak was just beginning — it was back when AIM was the preferred communication choice. We actually had a debate about whether it meant lots of laughs or laugh out loud. At the time, it seemed it could be either, but laugh out loud won in the long run.

I love saying why the face, btw.

I may be upset about it, b/c I care about TC and that bloggers and fans alike don’t get a bad rap b/c of ill timed and unneccesary comments. But as a professional, it is one’s responsbility to think before acting. That said, I never called for his head. I called for better use of professionalism and representation of TC and himself if he doesn’t want to come across as a muckraking blogger, or just another fan with a keyboard as a weapon.

You are right, I might overreact on things like this, but I do uphold the namesake of the blog and other things Braves to a higher standard than just another a-hole fan.

I love your fire and your opinions are always well recieved

I was just taken aback a little by your approach on condemning our wonderful leader. I concur he made a dumb mistake and I think you made a well founded point. We Braves fans have had enough bad news and bad situations where we don’t need our own instigating those issues farther. as we all know, Gondeee is not a muck-racker and if you trek through a few of the blogs, I think you’ll find (as i’m sure you already know) he’s quite respected amongst the peer blogs.

Glad your a fierce Braves fan. We need that kinda loyalty. :-)

I know gondee is legit, but probably not as much as a lot of you do. I dont’ stray a ton from TC but I have seen some of his work. Therefore, I just would hate to see him put a dent in his future by creating a persona based solely off of a tweet war with a player, which will not for fellow TCers but very well could with anyone not associated with blogs or a reason to badmouth them altogether. Go Braves.

It does make the (now infmaous) TGP post look a little odd, I'll admit.

The most ridiculous post I have ever seen here. Totally unecessary, especially when you consider what the TGP mods do around these parts.
