Braves Quote For The Day ... Morning Tearjerker
I'm getting all emotional up in this blog. Great article about Billy Wagner, with some great quotes, here is one of them:
"I’ve learned a lot about who I want to be," Wagner said. "I retired out of baseball to be a parent. That’s more important to me than baseball. I know people are saying I need a certain amount of saves to get into the Hall of Fame. If (422 saves) gets me into Cooperstown, that’s great. If I never get elected to the (MLB) Hall of Fame, that’s fine with me.
"If I can raise my kids to be good citizens, good people, that’s all I need,"
The Braves have had a couple of episodes lately where players and coaches have shown themselves to be poor role models. I only wish Braves fans had been given a few more years to appreciate what a good role model Billy Wagner is.

I think he will make a great coach one day.
He reminds me (as a person) of Chipper Jones, Craig Biggio, David Eckstein (don’t laugh) and all the other “good guys” in baseball… Even though he was supposed to be tough as nails as a closer, in the clubhouse, he was a great guy.
I really hope our players took the time to appreciate what they had in him. I also think when Chipper does finally end his playing days, we will be having to fill a huge void in the leadership department of our team. Yes McCann has been around a while and Heyward is our future leader but I just don’t know if we’ll ever be able to top having people like Smoltz, Maddux, Glavine, Wagner, Jones, Cox around… Every year we keep losing a little piece of our heritage. I hope the young guys can keep it going but only time will tell… what kind of changes will we see over the long haul w/ our new coach and the new blood coming up.
I miss Wags but God bless him for making the tough choice and hanging it up on his terms and being the family man he has always wanted to be. I couldn’t imagine what kind of choice that is like.
I don't think he'll be coaching in the Majors. Too much a of a time commitment....
God typed "iddqd" before creating Jason Heyward.
I think McCann will be the one leading the new wave of Braves. He has been around all of the older guys and I’m sure he will be able to help carry the torch on.

That clip from Tombstone before Enter Sandman played last year was epic. Best entrance ever.

When we signed him, I was on the fence. He was always evil to me (Phillies/Mets/RedSox), but man, how could you not like this guy when you read articles like this?
Great role model. Probably really helped Venters and Kimbrel last year.

I will always remember...
that Billy Wagner slammed the door on the Phillies to end the 2010 regular season and send los Bravos to the playoffs. He seems like a hell of a guy, but I don’t really care how good a guy he is as long as he busts his tail on the field and is not a complete a##hole. A##holes make poor teammates. I do want the players and coaches to represent the Atlanta Braves with class, but obviously you can’t always get what you want.
Go Braves…let’s take two today!
Thanks for posting this.
Living in Houston for a while, I came to admire and respect Billy while watching and attending games there (in my Braves gear). I was disappointed he was sent to the Mets, figuring that atmosphere and his personality wouldn’t mix well. I was thrilled when I heard he had become a part of the Braves. I’m happy he seems so content in his retirement.
Who wouldn’t want this said about them:
“He’s a better person than he is a baseball player,” Naff said. “He’s got a big heart.”
"Curve: The loveliest distance between two points." ~ Mae West
He’s truly a great guy at heart. He’s also very funny too and always messes with guys in the dugout which is pretty funny hearing about some of the stuff he’d do. I wis we’d have him back for another year but he’s passed his job off to Kimbrel and has shown him and helped him with some of his pitches as well. I truly admire Billy for the year he was with us in Atlanta

I do.
He was one Met I never really disliked, and that was one of the reasons. He just seemed like a straight-forward, accountable guy.
After he came to the Braves, I still admired that trait in him, and came to appreciate what a really great person and player he is.

That was a nice read. As someone who often wonders what it’s like to be a parent, I was especially interested in how Wagner approached the balance between home and career. I have tremendous respect for those who step away from a dream to be there for their children. It’s a laudable decision.

Nice article
Wow never knew he went to Ferrum College. I went to summer camp there when I was a kid.
I was never a big fan of his until he signed with the Braves, but I’m damn glad he did. I was at the last game of last year when Wags scared us in the 8th, then struck out the side in the 9th. That was my first time at Turner Field too, damn what great experience.
I guess he ironed out his delivery there, huh? Huh? GET IT?

Ferr-is a prefix for “made of/associated with iron”.
Ferrum college – ironing out, etc.

This is what you were looking for.
I’m actually trying to think of REE jokes now. “You can’t be cerium!” “I used to be staunchly anti-methium. Now I’m promethium.” “Tim Lincecum’s favorite element is erbium.”

Ahh...
this is reminding me of the epic thread with the puns on players’ names. That really does belong in the thread hall of fame.

Thanks for being a good samarium and letting me learn all this great stuff… Although now I feel like a terbium.
… … … I think I’m epically failing here.
