My Lineup Theories of Rosterbating for the Year of 2011

There are several things I see when we rosterbate that need to be cleared up, or that I want to clear up in my own opinion. If we're all on the same page, then we can truly 'bate as one. These are details that I declare Bravintific theories upon the bloggers of TalkingChop. Please note that in this post, the following are my observations and how they apply to my opinion, or rather, my rosterbated lineup.

1. Chipper Jones will always bat 3rd in the lineup, except for 4th a couple of times a year. This is the way it has always been done, and this is the way it will always be. Bobby Cox has always done it like that, and from what we've seen from Fredi Gonzalez, it will always be like that. In my rosterbaition sessions, Chipper will bat third.

2. When Jason Heyward comes back, he will not, I repeat, not bat third or cleanup. Jason Heyward may bat second, fifth, or sixth. He and Martin Prado have solidified their places as worthy of second in the lineup. When Heyward comes back, in my rosterbation sessions, he will be second, fifth, or sixth. If he bats second, Martin Prado will move.

3. From here until Nate McLouth comes back (this point is questionable to me, I'm not sure) Jordan Schafer will hit leadoff. He has much more speed than McLouth, his defense is better than McLouth, and his on-base percentage is better than McLouth. When it comes to the leadoff spot, OB% is more important then batting average. The only possible advantage McLouth has over Schafer is experience, but it really doesn't matter right now. In my rosterbation sessions, for now, Schafer shall bat leadoff.

4. Dan Uggla. Laudy-Tom-Daw. Dan Uggla, for the remainder of his horrid and terrible slump, shall bat in the spots of fifth, sixth, and sometimes seventh. This indicates, and I declare, that Dan Uggla will never bat eighth. In my opinion, he should be sitting on the bench until he gets his mind right. But, because Fredi Gonzalez knows him so well, he'll be fifth, sixth, or seventh.

5. Brian McCann will always bat cleanup. That's the way it was all last year, and that's the way it's been so far this year. I'm declaring that the cleanup spot be reserved only for Brian McCann, because that's the way it will always be for the rest of his career. His performance lately has proven how much he's excelled as the cleanup hitter.

6. The pitcher will bat 9th. We are not managed by Tony La Russa, nor will we ever be.

7. Martin Prado will always be first (not right now) or second. He has proven he's a true second place hitter. But, when Heyward and McLouth come back, I think placing Prado will be the hardest decision to make when rosterbating. Does Heyward take back his second-spot or does he move to fifth or sixth? In my own opinion, Prado should stay at second and move Heyward down. After all, before Heyward was injured, he was in a slump, right? But that was because of the injury. We'll see if Heyward's injury has fully left him and he can regain his power and bat. Like I said, it's all a jumble for Prado right now.

8. Freddie Freeman and Alex Gonzalez shall bat in the combinations of the places fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth. Their places will change for days like when Chipper has a day off or when Brooks Conrad or Joe Mather will be in the lineup.

9. If Frank Wren acquires a slugging outfielder, say for fun, Josh Willingham, he will bat fourth or fifth. I wouldn't be surprised if he hits fifth and McCann still hits cleanup.

10. Lastly, Kevin Towers. That is all.

Following my own theories, this is my lineup for the day that Heyward comes back:

1. L Jordan Schafer CF

2. R Martin Prado LF

3. S Chipper Jones 3B

4. L Brian McCann C

5. L Jason Heyward RF

6. R Dan Uggla 2B

7. L Freddie Freeman 1B

8. R Alex Gonzalez SS

9. Pitcher

Some discussion I'd like to bring up is the return of Nate McLouth. His performance this year is still bad. Should Nate McLouth be brought back to the Atlanta Braves and Jordan Schafer be sent down? Should we send McLouth to Gwinnett? Should we use McLouth in any kind of package as an addition? Should we just release McLouth completely? In my own opinion, I think we should release McLouth just to be done with him.

Have fun!

Release McLouth based on 30 AB by Schafer

Sounds like a great idea, especially considering we have absolutely no back up plan in the case that Schafer gets hurt.

Actually

It’s the best idea I’ve heard in a year and a half!

It’s only my own opinion like I said. It’s actually amazing that Schafer has already shown he’s better than McLouth.

Well, I wouldn’t go that far just yet. Right now I much prefer Schafer too but it’s still way to small sample to make that statement.

It's not easy to argue with, actually.

But then, not very insightful, either.

My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.

That might leave a logjam in right field. And I feel like the opposing offense would figure out pretty quickly that left field is empty.

Yeah

We don’t need another Heyward/McLouth collision.

I don't think McCann will always bat cleanup

Over the next 5 years and after Uggla relearns how to hit I think he will he cleanup a lot. This rosterbation assumes that Uggla will never hit well again. So assuming that we believe that ugglas 6 year career is more realistic than his first 200 ABs as a Brave, the lineup will probably look more like prado, Heyward, chipper, Uggla, McCann, Freeman, Gonzo, shafer/mclouth. I could see gonzo and Freeman swapping based on matchup.

So let me get this right...

This is our fourth lineup fanpost/shot in the last week… But because it has the word rosterbation in it, we’re going to look at it replacing a thread full of lineup rosterbation already in it…. I’m ok with that, I really am…

And ChopMaster, as one of your biggest critics, I must say, you put together well articulate if not properly backed up thoughts in your post… You’re getting better… BUT… do we really need another lineup-rosterbating thread? /sigh

I do not agree that McCann is our cleanup hitter for the forseeable future. I see him more as a number 5 hitter when Heyward figures himself out… As long as Schafer is producing, I concur that is and always will be our leadoff guy… Prado for as long as he is in a Braves uni is our number 2 guy. No ifs ands or buts… Chip is Chip. If he’s not careful, he’s going to be on the DL for a few months… :( but he’s still Chip and is 3. W/ the way things currently are, I agree McCann is best at 4 but it’s not permanent by any means.

Here’s something we should be rosterbating… w/ our young RF not able to stay healthy for any period of time in any season, what are we doing wrong with him and is he a lost cause? A younger version of our fantastic 3B who can’t stay health for a season anymore… Granted, we’d never rid ourselves of Chipper but at what point do you look at the strength and conditioning of the young Jason Heyward and make adjustments to keep him healthy? What if we have to go two months were our lineup is w/o Chipper AND Heyward? Would fans be plunging to their pre-mature deaths? Would there be 30 fanshot/posts wondering what the future of Atlanta baseball is?

Anyways, again, nice post… I’m just getting tired of all the lineup threads… I may have to stop visiting them because I keep reading the same thing from the same people each time… Love you all though. :-) /waves and ducks the inevitable onslaught

Well I agree with you but, I loves to see Mccann in the 3 spot with Heyward hitting cleanup in the future. With all the doubles Mccann hits, More RBI chances for Heyward.

Trade McLouth for whatever, be willing to eat his salary, as you’re going to be eating it anyways.

if Schaefer gets hurt/something happens, you’ve got Mather, you’ve got Wilkin Ramirez- those are better options then McLouth- at least defensively.

Also, if you bring McLouth up, Schaefer’s the only OF out of options (other then Heyward, and if Heyward was sent down to keep McLouth up, we’d have to take action)

I feel bad about Chipper- it’s obvious he still has skills, but it’s also obvious that he’s too hobbled to be a consistent field player anymore. It feels like Glaus from last year- we should be pulling him, or keeping him for late in games.

Put Freeman in the 6 spot and you've got that lineup right

Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Matt Young was called up recently?
I think Uggla needs to sit for a few more days (like 3 or 4, nothing more) and we could start Young at 2B in that time.

Not only did Uggla not hit tonight, but he wasn’t very good in the field either. I don’t know what it is, maybe the pressure to perform in a new place, but this slump’s in his head bad.

Uggla...

What is up with his hitting? For that matter, the bats of all the Braves? Is it the hitting coach? Did they drink the wrong Kool-Aid?
Now, about Uggla…how can a hitter stoop so low in his hitting? Is there a problem with his eyes? Or what? I dont know…if I was the coach (thank God I am not), I would either send him down until he straightens it out or make him bat 9th. Yes, switch with a pitcher.

maybe “rosterbation: lineup theories for 2011” would sound better

“Rosterbation” should have never entered the conversation, really. All you’re talking about is what you feel is the best/most likely lineup moving forward. You’re not talking about anything that actually impacts the roster, just batting order.
