Our offense concerns me. Thus, for the second week in a row, I’m down from a 9 to an 8.
Other than an offensive outburst against a slightly injured pitcher, we’ve done nothing for weeks. Mr. Uggla is beyond terrible right now. It’s sad, for it’s mostly mental at this point. I didn’t realize Atlanta was such an intimidating place to play.
Also, all of these extra-inning games is taxing our pen.

I'm at 8
The offense of course and injuries concern me. All these extra inning games will wear out the bullpen prematurely. Have to remember tho we’re still over .500 winning% and in other divisions we’d be in 2nd, or in the AL west, 1st place. We are in a tough division. Hayward will be back soon and I’m sure they will do something about Uggla. I don’t know if Uggla is fixable but, I am confident Hayward will be back to his old self. Schafer has been a nice surprise as well and Bmac is kicking it into high gear.

Holding at 7, for now
I must say that the offense is beginning to worry me. It’s 2 months into the year, so the whole “Meh, it’s early” saying is getting old.

I think when this team gets into their groove, with or without D. Uggla, They will go on a tear.
I am confident we’ll pass the Marlins and stay close to the Phillies. We win the wild card this year or the NLDS against the Phillies. That’s what I like to think about anyway.

Trade Rumors???
9…wonder if there’s any truth to the big trade rumors with the Mets?? With Dickey going down, I read where Mets will give up one or two big K’s for proven/future starting pitching….
we are not giving our starting pitching to a division rival

How has Beltran been?
I’d consider Beltran for Lowe, if he can still play CF.
http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/
I feel like Beltran would be a trainwreck in CF with his knees and so on, but this is a knee-jerk reaction and I haven’t looked at anything to support my point, so I’m possibly/likely wrong.

Sounds like he's done a good job in RF,...
and his bat has played well.

We’re at the point in the year when I start taking individual performance and team standings seriously. Injuries and sub-par hitting have taken a toll on the team. They’re still easily within reach of a playoff berth, but it will be tough to make it unless the injuries stop happening and Uggla starts hitting.
6
Until Uggla starting hitting anywhere near expectations, and until Jason Heyward gets healthy and starts producing this team is going to continue to struggle. You’re going to lose a lot of games if you can’t score more then 2 runs.

On an unrelated note, I had a dream last night that Medlen came back (in May). He gave up 5 runs in the first. I think we were playing the Red Sox, but I don’t remember, since it was an imaginary ballpark made up in my head. We were all so confused about why he was back so soon.

Medlen doesn’t give up runs! On a related note, I can’t wait until he gets back!!!!

Foreshadowing next year's ST maybe??
Weird…

Maybe there's more meaning to it...
it means we will be playing the Red Sox in the World Series this year, winning in 5 games…and Medlen will be back already, pitching in the final game to help us take home the pennant.

Rodrigo Lopez
is off the team – makes me an 8. He got lit up yesterday in a start for the Cubbies – 4.2 IP 10H 6ER
We could have gotten so much more!!

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?

Are you serious?
The Cubs could have had him for free on June 15th.

Our team is better than we think. With all the offensive short comings and injuries we still have a top 10 record in baseball.
This team has become excrutiating to watch.
The offensive talent is there, but they just keep wasting brilliant pitching performances. So frustrating.
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

Are there any studies out there...
that show how offense is related to defense? In other words, does a team’s offense depend on how well they are pitching…do higher scoring clubs “have to” because the pitching is lousy and vice versa?
Or would the studies say that offense and defense operate in separate vacuums?
by TBuzz on May 31, 2011 12:51 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Interesting idea
The Reds score higher but their pitching gives it up too often, same for the Royals, they have a good ops but their pitching isn’t holding up. I don’t really know how much 1 affects the other. There must be a study about it somewhere.
Senator, we have another old saying,"Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining." Fletcher
I’m guessing it would be difficult to actually pull this together because both offense and pitching are likely correlated with payroll, meaning that they would be correlated with each other to some extent. I guess you could control for payroll—probably not too difficult of a data-gathering task then. Payroll as a control, year fixed effects, possibly league fixed effects (why not).
My other knee-jerk interpretation is that, considering that payroll is a scarce resource, you generally have an allocation choice—either to pitching or to hitting. More of one may cause less of the other, which may allow for a statistical breakdown that would look like your same effect—if you allocate more to pitching, you get less hitting, and thus you appear to not “have to” score a lot of runs. If you allocate more to hitting, you have fewer good arms, which makes it look like the hitting knocks guys around because they “have to.”
Basically, I guess what I’m saying is that it would be very difficult to statistically ascertain that batting performance tends to change when the pitching performance changes, or vice versa.
You would somehow need to find a baseline, then change a factor (either an influx of good pitching/good hitting while the other stays constant), and then see whether there were significant changes in the other factor over a suitably large sample.

I've been thinking the same.
The best pitching clubs (Braves, Phils, Pads, Giants) are all pretty bad on offense. Seems like there is certainly a psychological factor.
If we can land [Stephen Drew], I will give FW a bj.

Uggla stop waving your bat.
It takes a fraction of a second to stabilize your bat before you start the swing. You don’t have that. Watch McCann. Quiet bat means he has more time to start swing effectively. You can still wiggle a little bit to get the bat feel but tone it down to a tiny wiggle. Also bending kness slightly will give you better balance. Again watch McCann.
Lastly relax and don’t think too much at the plate. Let your body do the work. You are a natural hitter.
I don’t think Dan reads this site…

after being an 8 all year, I've been a 7 the last two weeks.
Our offense is not playing to its full potiential, Dan Uggla can’t hit, we lost mvhsbball….we just can’t seem to catch a break.
It was a particularly small egg...thats why I asked.

8 (down from 9 which was down from 10 prior to ST)
Our offense looks horrible and Uggla looks worse. However, even with those weaknesses we are still well over .500 and in the top 10 in MLB. Our pitching is scary good, and our incredible pitching depth is the best in MLB. Thus I do not think we will fall any further…but we can improve tremendously if our offense ever starts to click (and Dan Uggla starts to hit).

I don’t see where we go in the trade market if our offense continues to struggle. SS? CF? But who?! IF (big if for me now) Uggla turns things around, then we’ll be ok. Also, what if Heyward stays hurt, then what?!?

Freeman, Larry, and Uggla all batting .254 and below, ugh. Kimbrel: still a bit inconsistent, but he’s a rookie in high pressure situation, and I sure as hell couldn’t do it. Nice to see Prado and AGon’s average rising, and Hinske is batting .300! The pitching has had a few bad starts lately, but better now than in September. This team needs more timely hitting, they have to find a way get these runners home. Too many LOB and not enough hits with RISP. All in all, it is very frustrating to watch, but I think that comes with being a Braves fan. At least were not the Cubs.

Concerned about the overuse of our bullpen this year. Venters on pace for 98+ innings

I like most people’s concerns but our upside is that things have a way to work out…we have to stop these extra inning games though!

First time voting and probably a bit biased because I just got home from the game. There was a stretch where 4 out of 5 Padres hitters had knocks and I was so insanely jealous. I would probably put it at a 6 if I was not so emotionally raw right now.
