Braves Acquire Outfielder Jeff Fiorentino From Orioles

Frank Wren and the Braves have acquired outfielder Jeff Fiorentino from the Baltimore Orioles for, well, we aren't exactly sure yet. There aren't many details on the deal at this point, but one would think the Braves will either be sending cash or a player to be named later to Baltimore. We'll update the story more as more information comes along.

Fiorentino, 28, was selected in the third round of the 2004 draft by Baltimore. He briefly spent some time in Oakland before returning to the Orioles organization. The outfielder isn't particularly big at 6'1'' and 185lbs, but he's put up some pretty decent numbers in Triple-A and in limited playing time in the Major Leagues. In 2009, Fiorentino hit .312/.387/.510 with 12 home runs, 67 RBI, and 13 stolen bases. He spent the 2010 season playing in Japan.

This is all nice, but we have to ask: Can he bunt?

Who?

OT: Did anyone see (or even watch) the Sports Show with Norm MacDonald? Pretty funny commentary on the whole Roger McDowell incident (specifically the lawyer and that ridiculousness with the bat…)

Morton hit Heyward with an offspeed pitch. Early indication is that the baseball survived the impact.

2010's Ryan Langerhans

Seriously, this is an article that calls him that.

And they say it in the nicest way possible, i.e. kind of bad hitter who can play some terrific D and is undervalued because it’s so little fun to watch him bat.

So it seems, maybe a worthwhile move, but Wrenny can have no illusion that he can call this his bat.

I’m cool with deal like this accept when we do them and pretend our problems that they don’t even come close to addressing are magically fixed (i.e. Ankiel trade last year. I was fine with it expect that I knew that was it and we weren’t ever going to actually get a bat.)

He’d better get us a damn righty bat soon.

Fio! Got to see this guy play a ton here in Norfolk in 08 and 09. Very solid player who doesn’t really have any outstanding skills. He’s a team player, he plays good defense at all 3 outfield spots and knows how to bunt. I really think the Orioles messed him up when the called him up from High A in 05, less than a year after he got drafted. Kind of threw his career all out of whack. But he’s definitely a Braves kind of person, so I like the addition. After all, they’re only expecting him to add Minor League debt.

In completely unrelated news...

Barbaro Canizares has been hotter than La Flama Blanca for the Guerreros de Oaxaca in the Mexican League, putting up a slash line of .405 /.505 /.622 for an OPS of 1.127.

Libre Canizares!! We need a pinche hitter!!

Another interesting name on that team’s roster…Benji Gil. Raise your hand if you knew Benji Gil was still playing…

We keep trading for minor league OFs

but we never seem to acquire anyone that can actually help the big league club. Easier said than done, I know, but I’d like to have a solid 4th OF who can play center. I mean, other than McLouth.

We’ve now got 4 CFers on the AAA roster, unless I’m missing an injury or call up.

by TBuzz on May 4, 2011 2:20 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

About the only thing I could see it being a precursor to would be calling up Schafer or T-Bone, or possibly trading one of them (though I don’t see how either could have much value in a deal at this point).

Honestly, we just seem to be using our AAA roster for stockpiling AAAA type players in the hopes that we catch lightning in a bottle. Which, given the lack of hitting prospects we have in the high minors is probably a solid idea.

I’m losing count of how many OFers we had/have in Gwinnett. Mather, Ramirez, Gartrell, Constanza, Schafer, Young, and now Fiorentino. Age-wise, Schafer and Ramirez probably have the best upside.

Very different. Lefty hitter who excels on defense and slashing the ball. Gartrell is a big righty slugger who’s just Ok on defense and strikes out a lot and doesn’t walk much. Night and day as far as players.

I’m just fine with Nate McLouth as long as he’s hitting 8th and keeps getting on base at a .350 clip or so. It’s not like he’s our long-term fixture in center field.
