Reposted from other thread: Grade Minor's performance today.

I’m going B-.

Wasn’t as long as I would liked, and there were plenty of baserunners, but he showed good stuff, got some strikeouts, and only allowed 1 run in 5.2 innings.

My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.

he allowed less than 2 runs and pitched out of his jams

A-
5Ks only 1 run allowed.
He did his job today, we didn’t support him with run(s).

I guess I'm grading him a bit harsher on giving up so many baserunners

Didn’t retire the Pirates in order in any inning that I can recall.

It’s the equivalent of getting a good grade on a test by guessing right on half the answers.

Q: If not us, who? If not now, when? A: The Batman. And "when you least expect it."

by Lennox on May 25, 2011 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

So

I’m not the only one that employs this strategy?

Multiple choice logic: There’s always one that’s clearly wrong, to throw you off. Generally there are two answers which are very similar, one of them is right, so you can guess on a test and expect to get at least a 50.

My buddy and I just decided that the braves would be set if we could get Matt Kemp, Jose Reyes, and Albert Pujols.

Well, I think he did better than a 50. So he wasn’t guessing on all of them.

It was hit to the right side, the 2B covers the bag. Gonzo cost us an out and possibly a double play.

by Lennox on May 25, 2011 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

No, they decide beforehand who’s covering when it’s hit back to the pitcher.

Uggla can’t turn a DP with his back to first base on that play, and Gonzalez was in perfect position for the DP.

by cthabeerman on May 25, 2011 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Except that Gonzo broke in on the ball when it was hit, since he might have had to field it. It wasn’t a ball hit straight back to the pitcher. If the SS is the one fielding the ball then the 2B has to be the one to cover the bag.

For the record

I am still entirely opposed to using Venters there over Kimbrel. Pirates are RH heavy at the top of the line-up, and we’re supposed to be utilizing a closer platoon. Instead, though, we’re trapped in this backward idea that closers are used only if they can pick up a save, rather than in a high leverage situations where the game is tied.

I disagree about the “jitters.” But he is wild. Which is why I would have had him pitch to Tabata with first base open-I don’t think he’s likely to walk two straight batters.

In that situation, with the infield in and a run = a loss, I’d like to go with a pitcher who has a high probability of striking out the first man he sees. Johnny Venters doesn’t have a great K-rate against righties, but Kimbrel is uber dominant against them. If he strikes out the first guy, there’s two outs, and the infield and outfield can return to normal depth.

Only in the strictest definition of the word

mega-
prefix, often meaning “large, great,” but in precise scientific language “one million” ( megaton, megawatt, etc.), from Gk. megas “great, large, mighty” (fem. megale ), from PIE *meg- “great” (cf. L. magnus, Goth. mikils, O.E. micel ; see mickle). Mega began to be used alone as an adj. 1982.

But if it really bothers you, substitute “multi” for “mega” in my original post. Works out the same either way.

Uggla’s struggles make it difficult for me to gawk at his body. I can’t thoroughly enjoy it when he’s not doing well.
