Around SBN: Miami Wins Opener Over Boston, 93-79

Wasted Starts By Redmond, Hoover, Spruill, And Pacheco And Salcedo's OBP Streak Highlight Sunday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action

Andrelton Simmons had 3 hits and a stolen base Sunday afternoon.

Todd Redmond, JJ Hoover, Zeke Spruill, and Ronan Pacheco all  had great starts for their respective teams, but their offenses couldn't score enough runs to get any of the Braves affiliates a win. On the bright side, Edward Salcedo extended his on base streak to 18 runs.

Gwinnett Braves 3, Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees 6, 10 innings

  • Jordan Schafer CF 2-5, HR (1), 2 RBI, .261 AVG
  • Mauro Gomez 1B 0-3, 2 BB, .398 AVG
  • Ed Lucas SS 1-2, HR (1), RBI, 2 BB, .206 AVG
  • Todd Redmond 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 7 K, 3.49 ERA

Stephen Marek blew his first save of the season, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, while recording just 1 out in the 8th. Anthony Vavaro relieved him and got out of the inning after inheriting a bases loaded situation, but he was touched up in the 10, taking his third loss of the season. The bullpen woes wasted a great start by Todd Redmond, who struck out 7 while allowing just 1 run over 6 frames. Mauro Gomez had his 12 game hitting streak snapped, but he still reached base on 2 walks, so even his bad days are good. Jordan Schafer did most of the damage for the offense, driving in JC Boscan with his first homer of the season. Ed Lucas also hit his first homer of the season, and after opening some eyes in Spring Training, he's had a rough go so far this year, with a .206 average and a .653 OPS. He has wakled 18 times, leading to a .383 OBP, but he's also struck out 22 times, good for 35 percent of hit at bats.

Jacob Thompson takes on the SWB Yankees tomorrow.

Mississippi Braves 2, Huntsville Stars 3

  • Tyler Pastornicky SS 2-5, E (8), .286 AVG
  • Marcus Lemon LF 2-4, 2B, .261 AVG
  • JJ Hoover 6 IP, 3 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 K, 1.82 ERA
  • Yeliar Castro 2 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 1.29 ERA

With 2 outs in the 6th, Huntsville's Brandon Jones, yes, that Brandon Jones, doubled, which was followed by a Tyler Pastornicky error that led to 3 unearned runs attributed to JJ Hoover, who took the loss despite pitching well again. Hoover hasn't gotten a win yet this year, but has posted a 1.82 ERA and a 1.08 ERA. Pastornicky did extend his hitting streak to 5 games, going 8-21 in that span.

Tim Gustafson will face the Stars in the series finale Monday.

Lynchburg Hillcats 1, Kinston Indians 3

  • Todd Cunningham LF 1-2, 2B, 2 BB, .208 AVG
  • Andrelton Simmons 3-4, RBI, SB (3), .311 AVG
  • Zeke Spruill 7 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 5 K, 2.25 ERA

Zeke Spruill was rolling along, having given up just 1 run through 6.1 innings before he was touched up for a 2 run homer. Still, it was another solid start for the big righty, who's having a great comeback season. Andrelton Simmons rapped out 3 singles and stole a base, upping his average to .311. A move to the lower part of the order has benefited him, as he's hit .417 with a .917 OPS in his last 10 games. Todd Cunningham broke a 5 game hitless streak, doubling and walking twice.

Chris Masters takes the mound Monday as the team starts its road trip in Wilmington.

Rome Braves 0, Hagerstown Suns 4

  • Matt Lipka 2B 1-4, SB (10), .272 AVG
  • Edward Salcedo SS 0-2, 2 BB, .287 AVG
  • Ronan Pacheco 6 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 4 K, 4.26 ERA

Ronan Pacheco had his best start of the season, but his offense couldn't put any runs on the board to help him out. The big lefty allowed 5 baserunners over 6 innings, striking out 4. Matt Lipka has a nice 3 game hitting streak going, but he's still looking for that elusive first extra base hit. Still, he has 10 steals in 23 games wihle only being caught 3 times. Edward Salcedo didn't get a hit, but he did walk twice, making it 18 straight games that he's reached base by either a hit or a walk. He has a .380 OBP and has reached safely in 22 of the 23 games he's played in this season.

David Filak gets the start Monday at 10:30. In the Morning. Good luck, kid.

Jordan Schafer home run

Its a cold day in hell.

Also, if Simmons can turn himself into a consistent .300 hitter to go with that glove? I don’t care if he hits 2 homers a year – he will be a starter.

I’ve got Jack Johnson and Tom O’Leary waiting for ya, right here

Regardless of the specific average, if Simmons could put up that .741 OPS he’d have an insanely long career.

I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it:

Ed Lucas

I wonder if he feels he lost out to Brandon Hicks because Hicks showed more pop and now he’s pressing to show some power?

Hold on, that's what Simmons looks like?

I guess I was expecting him to be darker skinned based on Andruw and Jurrjens.

Simmons

Any chance he gets promoted to AA this year and TP goes to AAA since he will be AGon’s replacement next year?

Admired as a saint. Defined by my rank. Combined with my strength. My time and my length.

I think we'll see some rather aggressive promotions of SS

if the kids can show they earned it. With Gonzalez being an FA, I’d think that Wren would want to have a firmer understanding if he can depend on any of these kids as soon as next year.

That would seem to make sense around June/July...

maybe August. Especially if both can keep hitting respectably.
