Oberholtzer Dominates And Hicks, Terdoslavich, And Dalfonso Homer To Highlight Sunday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action

Brett Oberholtzer continued the trend of Mississippi pitching domination with 7 shutout innings today.

Gwinnett Braves 5, Toledo Mud Hens 6

Today was the first time Mike Minor had allowed more than 2 runs in a game, and it was also his shortest outing of the season. Still, he was in line for a win when he left the game, but reliever Anthony Varvaro allowed 2 runs in the 6th inning. After a 0-14 stretch earlier this week, Mauro Gomez has gotten back on track with 4 hits in his last 8 at bats. Brandon Hicks hit his third homer of the season and his third homer of the week.

Veteran Rodrigo Lopez will take on the Mud Hens in the series finale Monday morning at 10:35.

Mississippi Braves 3, Jacksonville Suns 0

The M-Braves scored 3 runs on only 5 hits, getting on on a double play groundout and another on a wild pitch. Brett Oberholtzer drove in the other run with an RBI single. He also pitched 7 shutout innings, picking up his third win while striking out 6 and walking just 1.

Paul Clemens takes on Jacksonville Monday night.

Lynchburg Hillcats 5, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 3

  • Phil Gosselin 2B 2-4, 2B, .220 AVG
  • Joe Terdoslavich 1B 1-3, HR (10), 2 RBI, BB, .252 AVG
  • Barrett Kleinknecht 3B 2-4, 2 RBI, .375 AVG
  • Dimasther Delgado 6 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 3 K, W (4), 4.17 ERA
  • Eliecer Cardenas 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K, SV (3), 0.61 ERA

Joe Terdoslavich clubbed out his team leading 10th home run and his team leading 18th and 19th RBI. Barrett Kleinknecht had a couple of singles and he's had a great first week with the Hillcats, hitting .375 with a .917 OPS in 6 games. Dimasther Delgado turned in his second straight quality start, picking up his fourth wn of the season. Eliecer Cardenas pitched his fifth consecutive scoreless appearance with the Hillcats. He's thrown 6.2 innings and picked up 2 saves in that span.

Zeke Spruill will take the mound Monday as the team heads to Kinston.

Rome Braves 3, Savannah Sand Gnats 8

  • Jakob Dalfonso LF 2-4, HR (2), 2 RBI, .283 AVG
  • David Filak 6 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 6.75 ERA

David Filak had another rough start, allowing 5 earned runs and 1 unearned run caused by his own throwing error. The one bright spot Filak can take out of this game is that he limited his walks, something that has plagued him this season. Jakob Dalfonso homered in his second straight game, extending his hitting streak to 4 games.

Caleb Brewer will pitch the series finale against the Sand Gnats Monday morning at 10:30.

Update (12:40 AM): In the wake of Jacob Thompson's retirement from AAA Gwinnett, JJ Hoover will be promoted from AA Mississippi to take his plae in the rotation. In turn, Matt Crim will be promoted from High A Lynchburg to take Hoover's spot in the AA rotation.

We should call him up, he could be the bat our bench needs.

Mauro Gomez...

How does one continue to rake knowing that your only call up in the next 5-10 years will be because Freddie Freeman is injured…

That Mississippi rotation is ridiculous this year. KK, when healthy, is the #5 starter on that rotation too.

I have this sneaking feeling that KK won’t pitch again this year.

Do you think it’s more than just a shoulder injury? Some shenanigans perhaps?

by BravesFan on May 15, 2011 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I just have this feeling we won’t hear from him again and he’ll quietly go into free agency. I do think some kind of shenanigans might be involved.

Yeah, I think something is going on there. A concerted effort from both side perhaps. You don’t hear about any updates on his injury or anything. It’s just all very strange.

Perhaps KK didn’t like Pearl. I actually liked the town when I visited, but I’m biased to small towns.

not the right spot for this but.....

i had work and had to DVR the game today and just finished watching it (!!!!!)

I live in PA and had to watch the Phillies feed which read Kimbrel’s fastball at a consistant 97-98mph, even reaching 99 twice. Not a huge difference, but I’m curious was that their gun or did you guys and gals see that as well on the home feed?

Note/ The game yesterday was blacked out at my house(Direct), my buddies(local cable) and multiple bars, so i resorted to my phone and didn’t see his mph.

CB I hope you see this...

I also want to credit and thank CB for the work he does on this…. I wait every night ( and sometimes morning) to see the updates cause I’m too lazy to go and check myself. I follow our farm system very closely and this is a big reason. I’m guessing you must read each play-by-play for your write ups but either way you definitely put alot of work into this and I think I speak for everyone when I say this is VERY APPRECIATED.

With that being said, posting the link to each games box score could be a nice upgrade to the minor league wrap ups.

It’s already way too much work. There are a lot of little procedural things we have to remember to make these writeups, I’m not looking to add any more.

Don’t know much about Jacob Thompson, knew he wasn’t a prospect…but what happened? Was it an injury thing…or was he going to get released?

by TBuzz on May 16, 2011 12:51 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

The guy was 6’6" with life on his heavy fastball and a good sinker. He was definitely a prospect, just not a top one. There are so many good pitchers in the system it doesn’t take much to not be a top prospect.

It wasn’t very likely he was going to get released. He might have gotten demoted, but it was obvious with how aggressive the Braves were with his promotions that they liked him and were willing to give him a chance to reach his potential. The likely story is that Jake just wasn’t having fun doing what he was doing, and didn’t see the fun returning. Baseball is a tough job, and it’s not for everyone.

I wouldn't consider myself a credible source

but I believe it was performance… I’m fairly sure (from what I’ve read) it wasn’t injury related. And I don’t recall our organization releasing too many players in this situation mid season. I believe the only reason he has made it to AAA is because of his age. His career numbers aren’t too good. 10.4 H/9, almost a HR/9 and over 3 BB/9. I think he just got down on himself and decided to hang it up.

This does allow for Randall Delgado, to step up to AAA. Who I believe is our 2nd best pitching prospect. I may not be as informed as other on here when it comes to our prospect, but I am lucky enough to vacation to Myrtle Beach for multiple weeks every summer and have seen him pitch often as I went to nearly every MB home game. I really like Delgado, as well as, JJ Hoover, who I think is a close third in our system and can be a GREAT back end starter soon.

JJ is actually the one moving up to take Thompson’s place.

Maybe they’re both going up, but the word directly from Hoover is that he’s on his way to AAA.

I also just want to thank you for these minor league writeups. I know they probably are very time consuming to do. For me, they are the best thing on the site. Keep up the great work !
