Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 4/09
Durham 2, Gwinnett 1
- J. Schafer 1-2 2 BB, SB
- W. Cabrera 1-4 2B, K
- T. Redmond 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Todd Redmond gave up a leadoff homer to Desmond Jennings and then allowed a manufactured run in the third to give the Bulls all they needed to defeat the Braves. The offense was completely inept again while collecting just six hits and one extra base hit and striking out 12 collectively. Jordan Schafer (surprisingly) was the only player to not record a strike out in this one. Seeing him collect two walks gives me a little hope as well since he apparently forgot how over the last two seasons.
Jackson 5, Mississippi 6
- A. Richardson 1-1 2 BB, SB (2)
- T. Pastornciky 1-4 RBI, BB
- C. Harrilchak 2-5 RBI, K, SB
- E. Mejia 2-5 RBI, K, 2 SB
- G. Rodriguez 1-4 HR, BB, K,
- R Query 2-2 HR
- P. Clemens 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 7 K
The Braves went into the bottom of the 9th down by one run and got a double and a couple of singles to pull out the walk off win. Paul Clemens was solid outside of the fifth inning where his control got away from him and he gave up a double and a homer on top of a wild pitch. Ernesto Mejia is a guy who has always been able to just hit a baseball. unfortunately he strikes out a ton and doesn't walk at all. Don't be surprised if he goes out and gets 70 extra base hits. Gerardo Rodriguez is basically the same player with less contact ability and less walks.
Lynchburg 6, Potomac 5
- A. Simmons 0-4 BB, 2 K
- P. Gosselin 1-5 2B, 3 RBI, K
- J. Leonard 2-4 BB
- B. Schlehuber 0-1 3 BB, SB
- A. Vizacaino 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K
Arodys Vizcaino was a little shaky to start his 2011 season but settled down quickly. He allowed a leadoff single, two stolen bases and then a double and single to the first three hitters to give up his two runs. He then retired 15 of the next 16 batters he faced including four swinging strike outs. Phil Gosselin supplied the big offensive blow with a bases clearing double in the third inning. David Hale came in to pitch the last three innings but imploded in the ninth giveing up three runs before Jason Lowey came in to record the last two outs. Adam Milligan did not play in this one though Robby Hefflinger did contribute two hits.
Hagerstown 3, Rome 2
- E. Reyes 1-2 BB
- E. Salcedo 1-3 BB, K
- M. Rose 1-2
- S. Kent 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K
- C. Shreve 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K
Rome drops another game to Hagerstown but they haven't let Harper do any damage since his first two ABs in the series. Matt Lipka left the game after the first inning (I don't know why - if anyone was there please share in the comments). The offense couldn't get much going tonight with just five hits and only one extra base hit. Edward Salcedo continues to put balls in play and get on base. He also made no errors tonight, though playing DH probably helped there. Steve Kent is one of my favorite pitchers in the organization even though he has been around for a long time now. I admit to knowing very little about Chase Shreve until about 10 minutes ago. He is just 20 years old and had a very impressive pro debut with Danville (small sample size) last season. He is lefty who has added velocity over the last year after battling arm injuries. He should be worth keeping an eye on.

I've had the Jordan Schafer bandwagon parked in my garage collecting dust for 2 years
Here’s to hoping he catches fire and allows me rev it up again.
It would be great to see him come up in the late summer and be a productive backup and then be ready to take over in 2011.
Nathan Richard - Please come home. We all miss you.
Talking point...
is that Schafer’s wrist wasn’t 100% until last December. I figure that’s the last excuse left. If true, he’ll need some time to playing without pain.
Thats how I understand it as well
But if he’s 100% healthy it shouldn’t take a full season for him to remember how to hit. If he’s anywhere close to a .260/.360 mark by July or August then I’d say its worth letting him come up and play some CF and LF when starters need rest.

Thanks
Love the Minor League recaps, thank you for putting them together

I know we drafted his brother Colby a couple times but he didn’t sign.
Lipka
I was at the Rome game tonight. Lipka hit a slow-rolling grounder right of the first base line in his first at-bat and didn’t run even though it looked like it may roll back into fair territory. Well, it definitely ended up fair. I’m pretty sure he got benched for it. He didn’t come back onto the field for the top of the second.
Hopefully, if this is the case, he learned his lesson. From what I’ve heard about Lipka, he’s seemed like the type to always hustle.
Lady: What?!? How did HE get to Heaven?
GOD: Oh, he was in a different area code, so technically it wasn't cheating..

I would like to go on record, somewhere, as saying Craig Kimbrel is my new favorite player because there is no one who I enjoy watching more than him. Whenever I record a game and he appears in it I jump straight to his appearance just to see how ludicrous he makes people look.
After today's shitfest out of the 'pen...
I vote the Braves place a little more emphasis on developing guys for the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings. If the kid is able to be a starter you obviously let him try it first, but I wouldn’t be opposed to taking a few more guys like Kimbrel in the first couple rounds.
I’m almost to a point where I’d rather just go all home-grown with our bullpen and put the rest of our money towards the other 17 or 18 guys on the roster. Unless we have a chance to sign a sure thing like Billy Wagner (and let’s be honest…there’s about 10 bullpen pitchers in all of baseball who are a sure thing anymore) we might as well just forget all about making a move to sign a veteran for his “presence” or whatever the hell Fredi and Frank called it.

I think paying a lot of money for bullpen guys has always been a mistake.
I’d rather pay a bunch of bullpen guys the players min. and keep it moving. It’s just hard to believe guys are getting payed multi millions to pitch maybe 70 innings a year. Developing guys and using guys in your farm system for the bullpen is a great idea… I like it.

Couldn’t agree more. Plus we have some good arms already in the minors that could do a better job than Linebrink and Sherrill. I hope Wren doesn’t feel the need to trade for more bullpen “help” this year and just dig into his minor league system.
Instead of trading for Farnsworth last year, Wren could have brought up Marek. Plus, we would still have had Collins for this year. Hopefully Wren won’t make the same mistake twice.
Vizcaino, Marek, Bullock could all be filling those type of roles in the near future.

Just to reiterate was jmeri said about Lipka
He had an excuse me swing and it was a slow roller down the first base line. It did look like it was going to stay foul, but since he wasn’t running the Hagerstown players just let it roll just in case it did roll back into fair territory….well it did. They tossed it to first and Lipka was still standing in the batters box. He was definitely taken out because of it. I believe they even mentioned it over the local radio station in Rome that it was the reason he was taken out… I really liked the move by Rome’s manager. He has had a lot of success every where he has managed in the minors and lessons like this will do great things for a young guy like Lipka. I think he has learned his lesson. I could see him in the dugout and you could tell he was bothered by being taken out.
In other news… Bethancourt looks a lot better behind the plate so far. His arm is outstanding (threw a guy out on his knees the other night) and he is staying in front of balls (which he wasnt doing last year). Salcedo also looks really good. He looks more comfortable at the plate and I can now see the potential the Braves saw in him. It is still early, but I’ve liked what I’ve seen so far.
Good Rome Report
Thanks Scout. Good news on Beth and Sal. I read an article a few months ago about how Javy Lopez pulled B’court aside in spring and gave him a “I was just like you until” speech. I am usually dubious on that type of stuff, but let’s hope it turned the young man around. If so, then the ROI on Wren’s rookie development camp “Camp Frank” is greater than anticipated.
I read an article on Salcedo that opposing scouts were shocked by his rawness and another article that he has excellent makeup and worked all off season to improve.
Look forward to more Rome Reports.

is my real life friend, glad to see him doing work!

Arodys Vizcaino
seems like the MiL player of the day. My feeling is he will pretty quickly be moved up to Pearl.
