Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 4/08
There were a couple running themes in tonight's games. The first being nearly inept hitting from 3-4 spots in the order for nearly every team. The second is good starting pitching being spoiled almost immediately by bad relief pitching.
Durham 5, Gwinnett 3 - 12 Innings
- J. Schafer 1-6 RBI
- W. Ramirez 3-5 3B
- J. Teheran 5.2 IP, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K
- S. Marek 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Julio Teheran put together a solid AAA debut, but it was spoiled when Scott Proctor came on in relief and gave up two runs. The Brave eventually tied the game to send it into extra innings but couldn't put together the offense to pull out the win. Diory Hernandez and Ed Lucas (the 3-4 hitters) combined to go 1-9 with a BB and 3 K.
Jackson 3, Mississippi 2 - 10 Innings
- T. Pastornicky 3-4 2B, SB
- J. Kreke 3-4 RBI, K
- B. Oberholtzer 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Brett Oberholtzer is a guy I missed the boat on last season. I didn't realize how good he really was until after everything was said and done. He pitched very well tonight only throwing 71 pitches in his 6 innings and only allowing baserunners in the 3rd. Every other inning was perfect. Also five of his six strike outs were swinging which indicates that his stuff was exceptional as well. Tyler Pastornicky raised his average to .714 through two games. That will get you noticed (at least by me). (Just so you know this game is still going on and if anything changed after I posted this I apologize but I'm not on my computer and I have to relinquish it now).
Lynchburg @ Potomac - PPD due to Rain
Hagerstown 2, Rome 0
- M. Lipka 1-4 2 K, E
- B. Kleinknecht 2-4 K
- E. Salcedo 3-4 K, SB
- C. Brewer 5.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 2 K, 2 WP
Caleb Brewer tossed nearly 6 no hit innings using the old 'effectively wild' mantra. Brewer has a live arm and prospect gurus have picked as a break out candidate in the past but he has succumbed to injuries the past couple of seasons. He is healthy and we could finally be privy to his breakout season. Unfortunately for Brewer his bullpen promptly surrendered the go ahead runs and the Braves offense couldn't muster anything. Edward Salcedo did show some signs of life at the plate while playing 3B yet again.

Great starting pitching at all levels tonight. In other news, Proctor is still a butcher.

So um, one question,
Is the Gwinnett lineup so bad that Diory is the best option to hit third? Because that seems wacky to me, even for AAA.
I think I missed the boat on Oberholtzer, too… He’s got my attention now, though. In other news, Julio Teheran is still awesome and Scott Proctor still sucks. Completely unsurprising.

He’s hit .319 in two straight seasons. Its not that crazy.

Seriously. Diory has been a very good hitter throughout his Minor League career. His inability to produce in very limited chances in the Majors doesn’t mean the guy isn’t a good hitter.

By virtue of my schedule, i was able to get out to 3 latter year Myrtle Beach games last year...
I went to Frederick and Oberholtzer got absolutely shelled…was not pitching to contact well and walking guys…i wrote him off as organizational filler…Frederick’s lineup was less than imposing. Billy Rowell anyone?
Then on my birthday (Aug 14) i went to see MB at Potomac….and Oberholtzer had 12 Ks thru 5 innings….and this was after another high octane K performance in his prior start…i believe that he had even one more 10+ K game to round out his season. He has definitely picked up steam as a prospect. I was kind of surprised when he got the ST invite even still.
I stood down on the field next to him and he doesn’t appear that imposing physically, but something changed him into more of a power arm from a nibbler over the 2nd half of last year. I hope he keeps it up.
I figured they were giving more ABs to the guys who could see MLB action this year
The only guy in the top 5 in the Lineup who prolly won’t get any burn with the big club was Costanza (no idea who he is…). The rest were Schafer (1), Diory (3), Lucas (4), and Mather (5). Just trying to ensure those guys get more ABs so when they’re sharp when they’re riding the pine with the big club.
Apparently the plan at Rome is to have Lipka at SS, Salcedo at 3B, and Elmer Reyes at 2B for the first couple weeks, then switch it up, probably putting Salcedo at SS, Reyes at 3B, and Lipka at 2B for a few weeks. They might shuffle like that all season.

Teheran and Oberholtzer had solid outings. Pastornicky is on fire and hopefully Salcedo is starting to wake up.

geez, starting pitching depth in this organization is ridiculous
Two possible #1’s: Teheran and Vizcaino
Two possible #2’s: Delgado and Carlos Perez
- or #3’s: Minor
Two#4’s: Oberholtzer, dimaster delgado
a #5: Hoover
and Medlen who'll come off the DL soon
we could field another starting pitching staff just from within our organization in a year or two
This is my favorite feature on TC...all the other excellent work aside.
But i was wondering if underneath each recap, if someone could hyperlink the MiLB box score for each game. I wind up having to go there after i read the recaps anyhow.
YES I AM THAT LAZY!!!! :)
M-Braves have some awesome names
Oberholtzer, Pastornicky, Harrilchak
Just fun to say out loud
Anyways…
Morton hit Heyward with an offspeed pitch. Early indication is that the baseball survived the impact.

Gwinnett
Went to the game last night and figured I’d throw out some thoughts:
Impressive:
- Teheran is and will be a stud. Honestly, I thought he was off last night and all he allowed was a manufactured run by Jennings (1B, SB, WP which should have been a PB, SF) in the 6th. His control was off early (2 BB in the 1st), but he settled down and dominated from there out with basically 1 pitch working. The FB was elite – he was sitting in the mid-90’s (touched 98 in the 1st) all night with some nice arm side run – even took a little off once and allowed it to run a little more. Curve and Change were off though. I think only one Change wasn’t bounced and the hitter (Chris Carter) looked foolish on that one. Didn’t throw the Curve much, but it looked good in between innings. I think the hitters saw it when he did throw it though – not sure why. Could have been tipping it or maybe it looks different out of his hand. I’ll put the off-speed pitches into the “1st start of the year” bucket, but the 5.2 IPs of 2 hit ball are squarely in the stud category.
- Ramirez impressed me as well. Crushed the 3B where he ended up scoring the tying run and made a great diving play in the OF to stop the bleeding of Proctor. If he could figure out how to get his OBP into the mid-.300’s, he’ll be a major leaguer.
- Lucas’ #s looked bad (0-4, 3K), but I think he’ll play. The 1 BIP was a line drive to the WT and at least 2 of the Ks seemed like he was being overly patience. Was more steady than spectacular @ SS, but that’ll do.
-Varvaro was hitting mid-90’s in his 1st inning of work and looked good (painted the outside corner 2-3x), then was barely breaking 90 in the 2nd. Shocked they brought him out for a 3rd inning of work.
Not impressed:
- Proctor: FB was too straight. Was throwing in the mid-90’s, but when the other hitters are used to seeing Teheran, you need more than velo.
- Marek: Good CB, average FB. The Curve was very good with both movement and depth, but I don’t think you can get by with only that to get out MLB hitters consistently.
- Mather: Long swing, can get fooled. Don’t see his skills translating without some overhauling.
- Schafer: ELITE D. Almost threw out Jennings @ the plate before Teheran was pulled from around 250-300’ out. Also, made a nice play going back to the wall. OTOH, every time he made contact @ the plate (except once when he skied a ball to mid CF), I thought he broke his bat – the sound isn’t there. Dunno, if it was the wrist or simply a confidence issue, but there is definitely something amiss. It’s a shame too, with his D, he could be an AS CF with an .800 OPS.
Other impressions:
- Hernandez made a good diving play @ 2B and turned a couple of DPs with guys bearing down on him.
- Willie Cabrera is a little guy. I wasn’t expecting a giant, but I was still surprised by how little he was. I figured he was a 2nd baseman until his name was called. Was thrown out @ the plate when he went on a FB to very shallow RF.
- There aren’t any bats with the G-Braves. Lucas and Ramirez were the only ones who impressed me, and I doubt that Ramirez will keep it up all year. Mather and Gomez are all or nothing type guys, while Constanza and Nelson don’t figure to offer much except “steady” play either. Considering the number of little guys we had throughout the lineup, we flied out waaay too often. I’m expecting a call to Mississippi (Pastornicky? Harrilchak? Mejia?!?) this month and wouldn’t be surprised if someone currently in Lynchburg gets a call mid-season. No one currently in Gwinnett will be blocking a bat right now.
Agree/Disagree
Ramirez impressed me also. Not only with the bat, but also in the field. In the 1st inning Schafer when Jordan demurred on a popup because Hernandez was coming back, Wilkin saved the day with a daring catch threading the small space between them at top speed. The most impressive defensive play of the game by someone not named Diory.
I agree with most other things you say except that I was impressed by Schafer’s first 4 at bats. He and W.Ramz seem to have the only pop. He appeared to pull two foul ball HR s. Also line drive outs plus a punched blooper that produced a ribbie.
And how did Lucas impress you? I left in the 8th so maybe he did something in the extra innings? Only 3 GB players impressed me – Julio, Wilkin, and Jordan (except for his 1st inning lack of assertiveness.)
May be already in plan but guys I’d like to see stats on daily for AAA- Ramirez, Lucas, Schafer.
And if Linebrink/Sherill struggle this year, when would Marek,Abreu or Jairo be called up?
