Braves Fall To Brewers 5-4
Mike Minor wasn't sharp in his season debut and allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks in just 4.1 innings. The Braves hitters were all over Marco Estrada in the first inning, but he settled in nicely as the game went on. With the Braves trailing 5-1 in the 6th inning, Jason Heyward hit a monster 3-run home run into the right field seats to bring Atlanta within one.
The Brewers bullpen came in and worked a scoreless final three innings. The Braves got their leadoff hitter on base in the 9th inning after Heyward drew a walk, but Alex Gonzalez struck out, Matt Young hit into a fielders choice, and Eric Hinske popped up to the right fielder to end the game.
The bullpen was stellar once again tonight. Cristhian Martinez, Eric O'Flaherty, and Peter Moylan combined to work 3.2 innings and despite allowing four hits and a walk, they managed to keep the Brew Crew scoreless during the last few innings of the game.
Pretty frustrating loss, but we still have a chance to win tomorrow and end our first road trip with a winning record.
MVP:
Jason Heyward - 1-for-3, BB, HR (2), RBI 3 (5)
LVP:
Mike Minor - 4.1IP, 7H, 5ER, 4BB, 2K
What's next:
The final game of the four-game series in Milwaukee will feature Tommy Hanson and Shaun Marcum on the mound. We can expect to see Chipper Jones get the day off. A win would not only split the series, but give us a 4-3 record on our first road trip of the year.
Comments of the Game:
Bronn had this reply to the Brewers announcers when they asked if Chipper is a legit Hall of Fame candidate...
And NCChopper posted this beautiful automobile after Heyward's 3-run bomb...

well
i think we can all safely assume those numbers will come up considerably…with or without any help from nate.
Defiantly shouldn’t have lost this game…I still don’t know the name of their pitcher tonight. Hopefully this one wakes Freddi up to realize Heyward needs to be batting with men on base! Switch Heyward and Uggla, BMAC has been frequently getting on base and Uggla then pops up to left or GIDP and then JHEY leads off the innings with no men on, except in the case he has runners on he absolutly monnshitted that ball.
Switching Heyward with Uggla would give Heyward more RBI spots and Uggla his shots to clean up with a HR or base knock every now and then
But this for sure wasn’t a game we should have lost…

Not as good as a win
But I am really pleased with the bullpen’s performance, and Fredi’s management of it, in all six of the games we’ve played thus far.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Bullpen, rotation and defense have been great so far this season
Those are the hardest things to get right.
Our offense is too good not to catch fire soon, and once they do we will have a complete package.

Uggla just been slumping right now
once he gets going look out
Indeed.
There are many positives to take out of the team’s play so far.
Don’t forget, we have yet to play at home, we’re depending on a lot of rookies, and Uggla is a notorious slow starter.
And oh yeah, we’re still 3-3. As Bobby was fond of saying, .500 on the road usually gets you in playoff position.

At least, for once, batting Heyward 6th paid off.
Moylan has looked pretty good so far.
Minor… dude, this is not how you try to secure a spot on the team, after Beachy dominated the same lineup.
"Give him the heater Ricky."
Not saying that you're making the argument yourself
But the “Heyward hitting 6th obviously isn’t a problem – he homered tonight!” is incredibly flawed.
If you bat Albert Pujols 9th he would still probably hit 30 homers, but it doesn’t make it any less dumb.

I'm not for Heyward being in the 6 spot.
I found it incredibly odd that Fredi decided to put Freeman in the #2 spot instead of moving Heyward there. It was more a sarcastic empty statement lol.
"Give him the heater Ricky."
I don’t understand why he didn’t just put Young in the #2 hole. He has hit near the top of the lineup his whole minor league career, and he takes a walk (his first AB). I think Freeman will eventually end up in the 6 hole.
Here’s how I predict the lineup later this year
Prado
Chipper
Heyward
Uggla
McCann
Freeman
Gonzalez
McLouth/Young
I really think Young is going to take McLouth’s starting job.
I’d love to see Chipper out of the three hole and Heyward there, but not gonna hold my breath on it.

I just hope the offense has their feet soaking wet by Friday night.
Minor seems a little mentally weak to me. I think Bobby and Management kind of noticed that once they brought him up last year and he was complaining about his arm being fatigued (or something along those lines).
The pitching has been great so far, besides Minor.
The offense will come around. It is way to deep and talented not to bust out and get consistent production soon. It is just a little frustrating as fans when you hear comments like “we are just trying to get our feet wet” and then you wonder what Spring Training is for.
I’m really enjoying Fredi G’s managerial decisions so far. I can’t say i’ve questioned a single move he has made so far. He has done a great job.
Not to be that guy, but Minor AND Hanson both stunk it up
And Sherrill hasn’t been too effective, not that anyone really expected him to be. I want to see Hanson show up with a dominant start, miss some bats and throw some K’s on the board. The constant 90-92 mph heat he’s throwing worries me.

Remember when we used to walk a ton and lead the league in OBP last year? Other than Heyward NO one is taking a walk. Uggla and McCann (obviously Heap is raking right now but I’m making a point) have combined for 0 and Sea Bass of all people is second on the team with 2. Free base runners help when you’re not hitting well.

I think his methodology with this is that he doesn’t believe pitchers respect him like they used to, and will try to get ahead early with fastballs. They could just be running into his zoning strategy.

I think it also bothered me that Chipper didn’t seem to take his usual glance into the outfield when he was rounding the base. He seemed to have no idea that Gomez threw an awesome strike to home (granted that could be Heaps fault for not conveying that he needed to slide).
"Give him the heater Ricky."
Brian told him to slide…if you watch the replay, Brian couldn’t have been more obvious about Chipper needing to slide if he were dancing naked and holding up a sign saying “SLIDE” in giant letters.

Chicks dig the long ball.
DOB: Did you ever hit balls as hard as Jason Heyward does?
Chipper: Is that possible?
Quite frankly...
I would rather Chipper be out than to potentially re-injure himself with an awkward slide into home—too many injuries occur at the plate due to the collisions with the catcher.
The non-slide occurred in the 1st inning. If the play had been later in the game, he probably would have risked it.
I am bi-winning. I win not only here but also there.
Its generally (not unanimously) a good approach to swing at the first pitch but perhaps we should have a few sessions where we emphasize patience…
Prado doesn’t. Plus it seems like the first pitch he takes is the same pitch every time he’s at bat.
"Give him the heater Ricky."
Prado can have whatever approach he wants as far as I’m considered. Martin Prado is a ballplayer who will do whatever he thinks is necessary to win so as far as I’m concerned he will always figure it out in the end.
I’m talking about the rest of the team and I’m especially talking about Gallardo last night.
As a team though, the Braves have never had a swing first mentality. Maybe I’m confusing what you’re advocating, but seeing more pitches is always a good thing.
Gallardo may not have been “strikeout filthy” last night but as he progressed through the game his 12-6 curve seemed to gain bite and helped him generate crap contact.

Ugh... #logicfail / Rant alert
Fredi on Heyward’s HR: “That’s why he’s hitting sixth, maybe, and not second.”
I was pretty happy when we hired you, Fredi, but you are not making it easy to give you the benefit of the doubt with comments like that.
It’s not just ridiculous logic, but a bit of a swipe at the fans for a guy hanging his hat on the decision to let a guy who is hitting .211 #SSS a year after hitting .190 #LSS and with a career OBP of .336 #FGSS (that’s f’in gigantic sample size) hit second.
Well how does this strike you boss:
Nate McLouth, in 5 games in the 2nd spot has 6 PA with runners on base and 3 plate appearances with RISP.
Our #6 hitter and consumate run producer, in 6 games has only 4 PA with runners on and just 1 with RISP, his HR tonight.
Not only that, but Nate McLouth has gotten on base 6 times in 21 PA before our 4 “run producers” while Heyward has gotten on base 11 times in 23 chances in order with a chance to be knocked in by an out-machine SS, a rookie (beloved though he is) 1b, and pitchers or pinch hitters.
It’s one thing to do something that like 90% of the world disagrees with, it’s an entirely different thing to be smug about the fact that it worked ONE DAMN TIME.
Meanwhile, Jason has been on base 11 times and scored just 3 runs, while Nate has scored 4 times after reaching base just 6 times. Is that because Nate is so much better at “putting pressure on the defense” than Jason, or is it because the guys hitting after Nate are hitting better than .238 and .105?

Yeah...
I am all for helping people out and making them feel good about themselves. One of the reasons Nate’s in the 2 hole is because Gonzalez wants instill confidence in him. Great. Is being a starting CF in the 6th spot (where we could move him) for a contending MLB team not enough?
Meanwhile, our team suffers because of it. How sad was it to see Heyward lead off the 9th with a walk, only to have junk behind him? Yeah…Ugh. I have no problem with Gonzalez’s logic if our 7th and 8th hitters were solid bats, but, right now, they do not offer adequate protection. Until something changes, I expect to see Heyward stranded a lot this season.
I am bi-winning. I win not only here but also there.
So, if Heyward bats 2nd – last night, there is no 3 run home run, but he probably scores in the 1st inning giving us a net loss of 2 runs on the night.
Then, we come to the 9th inning, and instead of getting a runner on to lead off, we have Alex Gonzalez striking out, followed up by Matt Young and Freddie Freeman – no chance to win with that as our 9th inning lineup.

Boo! Tomorrow AM. I want all things now!
This one instance is an example of why it doesn't matter much.
Geez. Let’s go back to complaining about McLouth all the time – at least whether or not he starts for us has the potential to seriously affect most of our games this year.

Heyward
Is a good player. He would produce in the 9th spot in the lineup. My concern is not with him, it’s with who surrounds him. I would much rather have him behind Prado and ahead of Chipper, McCann, etc. than behind Uggla (who is arguably our best power hitter) and ahead of our worst batters…Why even pitch to Heyward in some instances?
Over the course of the season, I feel that our best OBP player should have more, not less, at bats, and would add more of a benefit at the top of the order.
It’s my opinion. That’s all. As for yesterday’s game, it worked out (if losing a game = working out), but it’s really difficult to predict what would have happened had Heyward been in the 2 spot…We’ll never know.
I am bi-winning. I win not only here but also there.
THIS
I don’t even give a rip about who it is batting #2, it could be any of Prado, Heyward, Uggla, Chipper, Mac.
I would choose Heyward because I do appreciate that he’s faster than Chipper and Mac, and I don’t think Uggla is that fast either. I do appreciate speed at the top of the lineup.
That and generally, I would bat your best OBP guy ahead of your best hitters.
Honestly, I’m not even really bothered by today’s lineup (other than the fact that I wish we had a better OBP option than Nate outside of our top 5 hitters, but we don’t really at this point).
I still think it’s dumb to have Heyward be the last of your good hitters in the lineup since he’s the best at getting on base.
But in general, when your roster has 5 clearly, legitimately good hitters, and a HUGE drop off after those top 5, I want those top 5 in top five spots getting all the at bats they can.
I guess it’s fair to say my annoyedness comes in two parts:
1. The fact that after those top 5 hitters our choices kind of suck (until Freddie gets comfortable, which I think he will).
2. Our best OBP guy should be given the chance to get on base as much as he can.
So what’s frustrating is when it’s a combination of those two things, that our best OBP guy isn’t getting the chance to get on base as much, and when he is getting on base there is no one there to knock him in.
Tie ballgame (at least) if this would have been an accurate call.
(courtesy of SuperNewb who posted it in the OT last night)

We was robbed I tell ya! ;-)
Of course, the SP didn’t help, and our impatience at the plate added to our lack of putting this one away.
But we showed signs of life, so I’m hopeful for today’s game.

Taking a couple of minutes to get a key call right would slow down the game too much…Plus, if Fielder was out and the game progressed as it did, there could have been extra innings. Thus, the rules did us a favor, for we got to turn off our TV earlier.

Worried about Minor
He was mentally and physically drained last season and uttered the words, “I’m tired!” Bobby saw the blood in the water and sharks circling, and he didn’t run him back out there to protect his psyche and the clubs $2 million investment.
Fast forward to Spring Training…Minor is the favorite to be the 5th guy. He threw great early and guys in the clubhouse endorsed him, with Chipper saying, “We need a lefty in the rotation and Minor will dogood things for us.” But, as Beachy threw better and better, locked in mentally and admitting to feeling no room for error, Minor started to struggle with the pressure of competition. Yet Minor threw fairly well, Beachy was just better.
Now we come to his 1st start of the season…a chance to capitalize on his opportunity and prove he’s the answer now, and to challenge for more innings and force the front office’s hand to make room for him…and he walks the bases loaded and inevitably loses the momentum his offense created in the 1st inning after being 2-hit the night before. Chipper even said, “So much for momentum!”
The disturbing thing about Minor last night were his comments after the game. He said “I had the yips, was babying things trying to throw a strike, and was scared as I kept throwing balls!”
Holy Mary and Joseph! Minor needs to work on the mental side of things. In 8 big league starts, he’s uttered the words…drained, tired, scared…while referring to his outings.
There’s no doubt he’s got talent and ability, but he needs to get confident and stay in AAA! I’d rather see Lopez making spot starts at this point.
I like to listen to what players have to say, and in regards to Beachy, they say great things and I believe, in a way, they are talking to Minor, trying to get him clued in to what it takes in a MLBclubhouse.
Huddy on Beachy…“I love his aggressiveness and composure, he competes.”
Chipper on Beachy…“He’s unflappable, astrike machine, aggressive, fun to play behind!”
F. Gonzalez on Beachy…“He’s a competitor, works hard, and doesn’t get rattled.”
And if Beachy loses, he has a profound hatred of losing and makes comments about his frustrations and continuing to compete and improve. Same as the other vets who’ve been through the ringer. Beachy would never say, “I’m tired,” or “I was scared.” Neither would Lowe, Hanson, Hudson, JJ, etc.
I love Minor’s ceiling, but he’ll never paint it if he’s afraid of heights!
With Beachy doing well and Teheran and Delgado closing in, I’d hate to see Minor become the trade bait.

or does anyone else miss Bobby’s intensity when arguing for his players? Fredi has come out a few times, but he’s too calm. I want to see more fight in him.
We all know that Bobby would’ve been ejected immediately after that play at the plate last night.
Chicks dig the long ball.
DOB: Did you ever hit balls as hard as Jason Heyward does?
Chipper: Is that possible?
2 things.....
1. That was sad last night cause for a couple seconds I got hyped up waiting for Bobby to come waddling out only to see Fredi an realize Bobby is gone for good!:( To be sure I’m not the only one that had the flashback!
2. It occured to me this morning that I feel really bad for the marlins troll! Imagine what it’s like for him over on the board by himself! He was just looking for company

Anybody know how many times Fredi has been ejected?

As bad as the offense has been, I just keep telling myself if just 2 of the three slumping guys will get going (Uggla, Freeman, and McLouth), we’re gravy. I’ve got faith that two of those guys will turn it on, and for the other…well, I’m rooting for Matt Young to play well so he’s not a factor.
Also, could we please see the 2010 post-All Star break Tommy tonight? That 90-mph throwing nibbled from Washington wasn’t nearly as enjoyable to watch.

Thanks ump
It doesn’t matter that you couldn’t even see the tag…..
Just call him safe. Sure.
Hopefully we got that out of the way, at least for a while….

nope
umps are just as likely to blow calls going forward as they were yesterday.

Which is why it bothers me so much more
that we sent Chipper. You can’t do anything about umps, but can avoid silly baserunning decisions.

I figured that their CF’ers throw (that always looks really intense…..Tex-like) would be off. I would have sent him, too.
The throw was on teh money.

Why risk it?
It’s the first inning. You’ve been hitting the pitcher hard ever since he came up to the plate. Why bother sending the runner when it could be close? Hang onto him and let the inning get potentially bigger, instead of sending the second out home.

lol, i know it's a moot point....
but Uggla would have popped out, either way.

It's not a moot point
Uggla’s flyout would’ve been a sac fly.
