Braves Fall To Brewers 1-0
Derek Lowe pitched well tonight. Yovani Gallardo couldn't be touched.
The Braves fell to 3-2 on the season after getting shut down by the Brewers ace in Milwaukee. Gallardo pitched a complete game shutout and allowed just two hits and two walks. He needed 111 pitches to do so, and despite frequently falling behind in the count, he worked back and kept the Braves off balance all night.
Lowe pitched six strong innings and didn't deserve the loss. He allowed just one run on five hits and three walks, and struck out seven Brewers. The one run came in the 3rd inning after Yovani Gallardo hit a bloop single to right field. He moved over to third and Ryan Braun hit a single that just got under Chipper Jones' glove. That was all the Brewers ace would need.
It wasn't like Gallardo was mowing the Braves down with filthy strikeout pitches; he had just two strikeouts on the night, and they were both by Eric Hinske. The Braves were stung by the evil BABIP fairy and were just 2-for-24 on balls in play. That won't continue.
The Braves did put on a defensive show in the 8th inning after Jason Heyward misplayed a fly ball in right field. With runners on first and third and no outs, the Brewers were threatening to put the game out of reach. Prince Fielder hit a ground ball on the right side of the infield and Dan Uggla made an impressive play to go to his left, gather the ball cleanly, and make a strong throw home to nail the runner. With runners on first and second, Casey McGehee singled to left field, but Martin Prado made a perfect throw home to nail Ryan Braun by a step. And with two outs and two runners in scoring position, Scott Linebrink forced Carlos Gomez to pop up on the infield for the final out. It didn't end up changing the outcome of the game, but it was fun to see the Braves play so well in the field.
Just tip your cap to Yovani Gallardo and get 'em tomorrow night.

What's Next:
The Braves and Brewers will play the third game of a 4-game series tomorrow night in Milwaukee. Mike Minor will make his first start of the season and he'll be facing a tough customer in To Be Decided. Not much is known about him at all. First pitch is at 8:10 EST.

ehh I don't want to blame that on babip
I missed the first 3 innings but from what I saw we didn’t really hit many of those ‘balls in play’ very hard. We weren’t very patient it seemed and Gallardo has us off balance most of the night.
"I am here to be real and state the things you are all to scared to say because you don’t want to get your feelings hurt or you don’t want to hurt these bloggers feelings. I mean did you read this garbage preview? I mean seriously, it was a pile of crap." - Mastermike
That's the biggest problem I have with BABIP
It assumes all balls are hit the same. We took awful swings all night, and if we do the same tomorrow, we can expect something in the range of 3 or 4 hits max.
You have to look at BABIP in context
BABIP is thrown around, misunderstood, and used incorrectly far too often. While it assumes all balls in play are the same, you have to consider that over time some of those line drives and hard hit balls (see: Freeman, F. @ Was) are going to be snagged and turned into outs just as ugly bloopers can turn into hits, not unlike Gallardo’s single tonight that eventually cost us this game.
Besides that, consider what BABIP is being regressed to. xBABIP factors in GB, LD, and FB % and that’s the number that will tell the story of just how unlucky we were.
Also, we were extremely patient tonight and worked the count. We just couldn’t touch Gallardo. We saw almost 4 pitches/PA, and YG through over 40% of his pitches out of the zone. The guy was just dealing.
As much as I like BABIP as a stat, I agree that it doesn’t tell the whole story tonight. A lot of the contacts that we made were quite weak ground balls and fly balls.
On the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised that Lowe had another outing with a high K rate.

Tough Loss
Lowe has looked impressive in both starts this season looks like he picked up right where he left off in September. Gallardo is a tough pitcher and he threw a gem but our bats will wake up soon and when they do we will be a scary team.
In baseball, you're supposed to sit on your ass, spit tobacco, and nod at stupid things. Perfect life might I add.

Thank you for being one of the sane people.
I’m trying not to take sanity for granted any longer. There’s a shortage of it anytime the Braves lose or anytime a single player struggles.

In the “Comeback Kids” post earlier tonight. Can this lineup hit established starters or must it wait to feast on weak bullpens later in the game? Who knows… Oh well tough game… Listening to it in accounting class made it suck more

I think it's a very deep lineup....
…and I have no doubt they’ll deliver. I don’t think the ‘comeback’ will be needed as much this year, I’m just chalking it up to coincidence thus far considering we’re only 5 games in. Most of these guys are proven hitters, so if they can stay healthy enough I’d be shocked to see the offense struggle for a significant stretch.

I wonder..
If Nate is the one getting the day off tomorrow and Matt Young gets to shine. SSS on Nate, but with his past, it’s easier to jump on the bandwagon early this year. Just don’t think he’s good enough to bat 2 and play CF

Not going to tip my cap
Gallardo was good but not that good. Like you said, he frequently fell behind in the count, only struck out 2, and somehow was able to keep his pitch count down and pitch a complete game.
It was mostly the Braves fault. Flailing away at bad pitches in hitters’ counts and popping up or weakly tapping very hittable pitches.

Gallardo always gives the Braves fits
I can’t say I’m honestly surprised that he pitched well, I was just hoping not this well. The sliders he was using to deuce Hinske for his two Ks were dirtier than the bathroom floors at Underground Atlanta.
But despite the loss, I have to really boast the excitement and say I was genuinely pumped the way the Braves bullpen and defense neutralized the threat in the 8th inning, yielding nothing. Two plays at the plate, and good pitching made me scare the dogs with expletive joy.

An ERA below 1 in 5 career starts vs the Braves...
yet Joe Simpson had never heard of the guy before last night? I still don’t understand that statement.

From what I heard (granted I wasn’t really listening to the commentary) it sounded like he said that it was possible to be in baseball and not have heard of Gallardo, not that he himself hadn’t heard of him.
Though, again, I wasn’t really listening, so maybe he did say he had no idea who Gallardo was.

Living in PA and getting every Pirates game on my TV, I watched him quite a bit when he was in Pitt. I know the “eye test” isn’t admissible in court, but Nate just isn’t the same player anymore.
2010 and yes, 2011 Nate looks nothing like the version I watched for 3 years pre-Atlanta. He’s lost “it”. I don’t see him getting above .240/.330 anymore.
Sidenote: watching Pittsburgh Pirates baseball is a truly painful experience. Their fans are masochists, but they are extremely passionate. If they ever get a winning club they will sell out every game.

6 hits in his final 32 at bats to be precise. A .188 AVG.

See, why do you have to go and ignore the rest of what he did?
You took a SSS of one month, which indeed is a SSS, and you made it even smaller to support your point.
My SS, which is 2-3 times greater than yours, shows Nate posting a .273 .359 .527 .887 line for the month including 3 HR.
That slash line includes his final stretch of games that you pointed out…

He has hit well in Milwaulkee before, I wonder if Fredi will give him the pinch hit at bat tomorrow (and maybe the start on the day game Thursday).
MY tip of the cap will go instead to:
Our pitching & defense the last 2 games.
Our pitchers have allowed only 2 runs in 2 games.
And our defense has been solid.
Now, if we can only wake up the dang bats – we’ll save some stellar performances for our pitchers and some money on antacid for the fans.

Considering...
That both Boston and Tampa are 0-4 and the Giants have just 1 win, I’m not going to make too many judgments regarding the Braves yet.
That said, the offense has scored the following amount of runs: 2, 3, 11, 2, and 0. Reminds me of last season…I hope they start hitting soon…
Why do we struggle so mightily against starting pitchers? Boggles the mind.
I am bi-winning. I win not only here but also there.
I realize
that it’s very early in the season, but let’s try to break some of these bad habits.
Nate is still taking strikes and swinging at balls as he regresses out of his better-than-expected spring, and is looking like the double play machine that he was last year. Hopefully he turns it around, but anything other than the 8-hole (9-hole when Huddy is in the game) is really scaring me. Maybe let him wear a Pirates hat.
Hinske’s strikezone is still for shit. If it’s moving, he’s swinging. If he has a 3-0 count, he’s swinging through the next 3 pitches, in the dirt.
Let’s get on this stuff early. When both of these guys are in the line-up, that becomes a very big hole, on more days than not.
