Canizares released...
Really stinks for him. He can really rake. He deserves a bench spot somewhere. Good luck, Barbaro!

Really hope he gets some Major League time
Probably in the AL
Morton hit Heyward with an offspeed pitch. Early indication is that the baseball survived the impact.
Excuse my ignorance
But could someone explain why he had no trade value? If he did, why we didn’t trade him. I understand we had no use, but a first baseman that can destroy AAA pitching has to have SOME good trade value..
I love phenoms. Some of my favorite include Frason Freeward, Bratt Rymes, and Isaaron Murrell.
A) He’s 31
B) Little MLB experience
C) Not a good defender at 1B
D) Lack of positional versatility
E) Doubles power at best
F) All of the above
Essentially, the position that best suits him is DH. That limits him to 14 teams, and power is the premium commodity at that position. His doubles don’t stack up that well against home runs.
The players who have DH’ed thus far this season: Kinsler (will actually play 2B and Young should be DH most of the time), Abreu, Dunn, Posada, Ortiz, Ka’aihue, Hafner, Butler, Hunter, Cust, V. Martinez, Juan Rivera, the aforementioned Young, Matsui, Morneau, Encarnacion, V Guerrero, and Manny being Manny.
Carnizares doesn’t exactly pop out at you considering the players that will be filling the DH slot this season.

It’s rough to sit through these games and not have someone that can’t hit a Ball?
Logic. It’s a beautiful thing. Still, I don’t think Barbaro will have trouble finding a AAA job somewhere.
I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it:

Me neither...
and I wish him the best. As long as he can put up numbers at AAA, he’ll probably have a job in baseball. A National League team just isn’t a great fit for him at this point, especially one that’s decided that they’ve found their first baseman of the future.

Thank you
I knew I was missing something here… For some reason I thought he hit well beyond the low teens in HR for some reason. Too bad his defense is shoddy.

Jeez, if Freeman was to go out for the year,
it was somewhat of a comfort to know that we had this dude as a potential secret weapon. To at least make people go, “Wait……..who?”

I’m thinking the Braves want to get a hard definite take on what Mauro Gomez can bring as a RH power hitter at the AAA level. He’s put up some solid numbers the last 2 seasons (.843 OPS) and is a fully grown 230 lb. man. He will be 27 in September so this is his big shot.
That's my take as well...
Even if Barbaro were to break out with some home run power, the guy’s 31. It wouldn’t last. Mauro, on the other hand, could provide some sustainable amount of power for the organization for the next 4-5 years or so, if he has it.
He’s also played a little third, but I wouldn’t expect him to fill a couple defensive roles like Hinske does as a bench player. That’s the role I imagine he’d fit in on the MLB club if he got that promotion in a couple years.
Either way, I think this makes more sense moving forward, and it’s probably best for Barbaro to get his shot in an organization that could reasonably expect to find a spot for him at the MLB level.

Considering we need a RH bat off the bench and Conrad’s value is only as a PH, it would have been smart to see Canizares get an invite to Spring Training. I mean, he’s no more useless than Conrad. Don’t get me wrong, I think Conrad’s was the best player for the last spot on the roster, but he’s incredibly one-dimensional, just like Canizares, and Canizares is historically the better hitter. Oh, and they’re about the same age.
Just Beachy here. How 'bout you?
Except he's not...
As much as Brooks’ defense is derided, he can still fill-in at three spots. Canizares is pretty bad at the only one he plays.
Conrad can hit DINGERZ, Canizares cannot. Believe it or not, this is incredibly important from the PH perspective.
Brooks switch-hits, Canizares doesn’t.
There’s plenty of value in Conrad that Canizares doesn’t possess.

To clarify DINGERZ a bit...
Keep in mind the importance of power in a sac fly situation. A guy with doubles power probably isn’t going to be as effective in getting a sac fly, because the fielder will likely catch the ball at a shorter distance from home than a guy with more power.

An obvious different opinion...
After last year’s butchering, I’m quite interested to see how the Braves use Conrad. I wouldn’t doubt it if he were only used as a backup 1b. If he gets in games at 2b or 3b then I’m obviously wrong. This is my reasoning deeming Conrad as “no more useless” than Canizares. From my perspective, I guess the primary upside that I left out is his ability to run at a decent speed.
