Braves Quote For The Day ... The Most Unhittable Closer In Baseball

Jayson Stark gives us his players and pitchers of the month for April. The Atlanta Braves very own Craig Kimbrel makes the list as Reliever of the Month. Here's what Stark has to say:

Maybe a month ago, there were still questions about the back end of the Braves' bullpen. But you can rest that case -- because it's now clear that manager Fredi Gonzalez gets to wave for the most unhittable closer in baseball. So how unhittable is Kimbrel? He has faced 35 hitters this year -- and exactly four have gotten a hit, 10 fewer than he's struck out.

But that's nothing new. This guy has piled up more than four times as many punchouts in his brief career (54) as he's allowed hits (13). And the only other closer in history who has even had a two-whiffs-per-hit career ratio is Carlos Marmol (515 K's, 242 H's). So this is ridiculous. "He's the closest thing to a right-handed Billy Wagner that we'll ever see," one scout said.

Just in case you needed any really happy Braves news today ... and why would you? Kimbrel's stats so far this year:

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2011 - Craig Kimbrel 0-0 10 0 0 0 6 1 10.1 4 2 1 0 3 14 0.87 .68

It’s amazing how good he is. It’s equally amazing that Venters is at least as good and probably better as well. Incredible.

To be fair...

Sherrill is usually allowing someone else’s ERs to score…

by TBuzz on Apr 29, 2011 3:47 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

which means

he’s not doing his job. it’s nearly inevitable that a starter will get gassed and allow a runner or two on base before he’s pulled. that’s why he’s pulled, usually, unless it’s for a pinch-hitter in a tight spot or pitch count.

Wait - Kelly Johnson hits lefties better than righties? That just HAS to be backwards. - Bobby Cox as he looks at KJ's splits for his career

Really? Is this a serious question?

Because if so, the answer is YES, we purposefully are not talking about DLowe on a post entitled:

Braves Quote For The Day … The Most Unhittable Closer In Baseball

Do you understand how these blog things work? If you want to talk about Derek Lowe, and your resulting pissiness, then go to one of the threads with that as the subject. Here, I’ll make it nice and easy by giving you the links:

http://www.talkingchop.com/2011/4/29/2141914/atlanta-braves-pitcher-derek-lowe-arrested-for-dui

http://www.talkingchop.com/2011/4/29/2142964/atlanta-braves-place-mcdowell-on-administrative-leave-name-dave

Surely three whole threads should be enough space for you to express your opinion on that subject, and we can stay here and discuss our amazing young bullpen arms.

I’m not sure why…the Venters/Kimbrel combo is the least questionable aspect of this team (and I think that was true before we dipped below .500 too).

The whole pitching staff

That’s pretty impressive considering how lights-out the starting rotation has been of late as well. They’re up to #3 in the Rotation Rankings, as Tommy Hanson threw 14 innings of one-run ball this past week. The rotation ERA was a paltry 1.81 for the week, and it’s down to 3.16 for the season. The control has been great as well, with 5.11 K/BB over the last seven games. Check out the rankings:

I remember there was a lot of discussion about what song he’d use. Then he said he had picked one, but during the home opener the people in charge of that stuff at Turner Field forgot to play it when he came into the game.

Since then I haven’t heard anything about it.
