Braves Quote For The Day ... The Most Unhittable Closer In Baseball
Jayson Stark gives us his players and pitchers of the month for April. The Atlanta Braves very own Craig Kimbrel makes the list as Reliever of the Month. Here's what Stark has to say:
Maybe a month ago, there were still questions about the back end of the Braves' bullpen. But you can rest that case -- because it's now clear that manager Fredi Gonzalez gets to wave for the most unhittable closer in baseball. So how unhittable is Kimbrel? He has faced 35 hitters this year -- and exactly four have gotten a hit, 10 fewer than he's struck out.
But that's nothing new. This guy has piled up more than four times as many punchouts in his brief career (54) as he's allowed hits (13). And the only other closer in history who has even had a two-whiffs-per-hit career ratio is Carlos Marmol (515 K's, 242 H's). So this is ridiculous. "He's the closest thing to a right-handed Billy Wagner that we'll ever see," one scout said.
Just in case you needed any really happy Braves news today ... and why would you? Kimbrel's stats so far this year:

It’s amazing how good he is. It’s equally amazing that Venters is at least as good and probably better as well. Incredible.

Sherrill is usually allowing someone else’s ERs to score…

which means
he’s not doing his job. it’s nearly inevitable that a starter will get gassed and allow a runner or two on base before he’s pulled. that’s why he’s pulled, usually, unless it’s for a pinch-hitter in a tight spot or pitch count.

I tried to warn all of you. And yet, like Isaac Cline in Galveston, I was ignored by the foolhardy. Now who’s fleeing the storm surge?

I dunno that you were ignored
so much as the best action we can take as fans is to be optimistic.

I’m kidding anyway. I thought Sherrill was a bad idea, but I certainly don’t blame anyone for feeling differently about the subject.

I really don't think you're kidding
I think you personally hold it against each and every one of us who thought that Sherrill might do some good work as a Brave.

No, I hold the sweep against each and every one of you personally.
Sherrill’s just a mild amusement.

I just hope....
you’re completely healed by the time they come to Atlanta.

I’m not sure I’m even going this year. I’ve been to the Turner Field series in the last two years, and I’m just not keen on going again.

Venters > Kimbrel?
I just had that argument in my head and then took a step back and said “Who cares?” We have an awesome 8-9 combo!

Really? Is this a serious question?
Because if so, the answer is YES, we purposefully are not talking about DLowe on a post entitled:

Do you understand how these blog things work? If you want to talk about Derek Lowe, and your resulting pissiness, then go to one of the threads with that as the subject. Here, I’ll make it nice and easy by giving you the links:

Surely three whole threads should be enough space for you to express your opinion on that subject, and we can stay here and discuss our amazing young bullpen arms.

Maybe a month ago, there were still questions about the back end of the Braves’ bullpen.
I’m not sure why…the Venters/Kimbrel combo is the least questionable aspect of this team (and I think that was true before we dipped below .500 too).
Well, there was a question
but it was a “chocolate or vanilla” kind of question, as opposed to a “do we get to eat tonight” kind of question.

Didn’t we pass on him a few times before drafting him as well? Is he going to punish us at some point by allowing a 2 hits in an inning :)

The whole pitching staff
That’s pretty impressive considering how lights-out the starting rotation has been of late as well. They’re up to #3 in the Rotation Rankings, as Tommy Hanson threw 14 innings of one-run ball this past week. The rotation ERA was a paltry 1.81 for the week, and it’s down to 3.16 for the season. The control has been great as well, with 5.11 K/BB over the last seven games. Check out the rankings:
I just love watching him pitch...
and I adore his little leaning over, dangling arm thing:
