Tuesday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action Marred By Losses By Every Team

JJ Hoover's great start wasn't enough to secure a Mississippi win.

Lynchburg was the Atlanta Braves affiliate spared a loss toinght, and even then only because their game was suspended due to rain. JJ Hoover had a great start for Mississippi and Rome's offense was explosive, though it wasn't quite enough to push them over the top in extra innings.

Gwinnett Braves 5, Columbus Clippers 7

  • Jose Constanza LF 2-4, RBI, .355 AVG
  • Mauro Gomez DH 1-4, 2B, .400 AVG
  • Wilkiin Ramirez RF 1-4, 2 RBI, .271 AVG
  • Shawn Bowman 3B 2-4, .286 AVG
  • Todd Redmond 3.2 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 8 H, 2 BB, 2 K, 4.03 ERA
  • Jose Lugo 2.1 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 4 BB, 4 K, 0.00 ERA
  • Anthony Varvaro 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K, 4.50 ERA

Gwinnett's franchise record 7 game winning streak was snapped as Todd Redmond took his third loss of the season, though it was really the first game he has pitched poorly in. Small ball did him in for 3 runs in the first and he allowed a 3 run homer to Indians prospect Jason Kipnis in the third. Jose Lugo didn't dominate, but he managed to toss 2.1 scoreless and keep 2 runners he inherited from Redmond from scoring. Jose Constanza continued his hot hitting with a pair of singles, which is a trend for him, as just 2 of his 27 hits this season have gone for extra bases. Still, his .402 on base percentage is fantastic.

Tomorrow Jacob Thompson will take on the Clippers.

Mississippi Braves 1, Montgomery Biscuits 3

  • JJ Hoover 7 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 1 BB, 6 K, 2.28 ERA
  • Billy Bullock 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 9.35 ERA

JJ Hoover took the loss despite a more than quality start. In 44.1 innings at AA between last year and this year, the big righty has put up a 3.05 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, and 2.8 K/BB. Billy Bullock was hit hard in 2 of his 9 appearances, but other than that he's proven to be a fine acquisition for the Braves, striking out 11 over 8.2 innings.

Tim Gustafson takes the mound for Mississippi's ridiculously early 11 am game tomorrow.

Lynchburg Hillcats - Suspended after 3 innings

Lynchburg's game against the Wilmington Blue Rocks was suspended after 3 innings when a downpour rendered the field unplayable. Zeke Spruill started for the Hillcats and had struck out 5 through 3 scoreless innings. The game will be resumed tomorrow at 5 as the first game of a double header.

Chris Masters is scheduled to start Thursday, likely taking that assignment during the second game of the double header.

Rome Braves 8, Asheville Tourists 9, 11 innings

  • Matt Lipka 2B 3-6, SB (8), .250 AVG
  • Kyle Rose CF 2-6, 2B, .303 AVG
  • Edward Salcedo SS 2-5, .315 AVG
  • Christian Bethancourt C 2-4, 3B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, .212 AVG
  • Jakob Dalfonso DH 2-3, RBI, BB, .300 AVG
  • Elmer Reyes 3B 2-5, 2B, RBI, .216 AVG
  • Barrett Kleinknecht 1B 2-5, 2B, 3 RBI, .274 AVG
  • Ronan Pacheco 5.1 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 6 K, 4.66 ERA

The score was knotted at 6 after 9 innings, but Danilo Alvarez allowed the Tourists to score 3 runs in the top of the 11th. Rome made it a game by scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 11th on a Christian Bethancourt double, Robby Hefflinger couldn't bring him home, striking out to end the game. Bethancourt reached base 4 times in the game, extending his hitting streak to 5 games, going 7-19 over that span. Matt Lipka had a great day, rapping out 3 singles and stealing a base, though he has yet to collect an extra base hit this season. In his last 2 games, Edward Salcedo has gone 5-9, while Jakob Dalfonso is 5-7 in that span. Ronan Pacheco was roughed up a bit for the second start in a row, though he did manage to strike out 6 in 5.1 innings.

David Filak takes the mound for the afternoon start tomorrow.

Nice to see Bethancourt get some BBs.

and if Hoover is turning studly, that makes the pitching depth even crazier. The contenders for the 2012 rotation is already insanely sick—Lowe, Hudson, Hanson, Jurrjens, Minor, Beachy, Delgado, Teheran, Medlen, Hoover. 10 possibilities for 5 spots?

Delgado and Hoover are still awfully young though, and Meds is no lock to come back as effective. Still…pretty damn sweet.

Um

Hoover isn’t really that young

He’s not old either, he’ll be 24 in mid-August.

“young” referred more to how far they were from making the big club…certainly not from the beginning of 2012

Not true...

2012 would allow for a full season in AA. And the Braves have brought up several players straight from AA and skipping AAA. Hoover isn’t likely, far from it, to be a member of the rotation come opening day 2012, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be for a team with lesser options in their rotation or that he wouldn’t be a candidate for a bullpen spot (where some think he ultimately ends up).

You keep bringing up that the Braves have brought guys up from AA, but it’s not like it’s something they’ve done a ton. McCann is the only guy recently who’s had a ton of success after skipping AA. Francoeur came up from AA, but definitely should have seen some AAA time. They brought Saltalamacchia up and ended up trading him. Before that off the top of my head they brought up Furcal from A ball after a great ST and brought up DeRosa and Lombard from AA for a cup of coffee way back in the day before sending both to AAA for a few seasons. Yes, they have brought guys up from AA before, but it’s the extreme exception, not the norm.

I wrote a novel, it's about baseball, you should buy it:

And you are misreading my point...

all I said was that however unlikely it may be, if Hoover were in another organization, he’d be more likely to be a part of their 2012 rotation plans, and that after a full season in AA, if he came to spring training in 2012 and lit it up, it’s not unfathomable to think he could force his way into the opening day pitching staff. It’s not likely, but it’s not unpossible, as TBuzz indicated.

Always thought Hoover was an underrated prospect

He has the look of an old school workhorse type who can take the ball every 5th day and give you 200 IPs with an ERA a little over 3. I like him and would love to see him in Atlanta, but I also think he’s our most tradeable guy right now…

Hoover has always been a solid prospect

I guess Schafer is struggling. Ugh.

.250 / .333 / .271 / 12.1% BB / 16.7% K / .021 ISO / .286 BABIP / .283 wOBA

K rate looks better, he’s still got speed on his side, time will tell if can hit the ball hard

Schafer

I was at the game last night and Schafer hit the ball well. His hit was a bunt, but he had a couple of line drive outs.
