Braves Complete Sweep of Giants

Happy Birthday, Chipper!

On Chipper Jones's 39th birthday, the Braves required 10 innings to pull out a 9-6 victory over the Giants and sweep the three-game series.

The Braves offense gave Brandon Beachy an early lead to work with. Martin Prado started the game with a walk and Jason Heyward followed with a double off Jonathan Sanchez. Chipper drove them both in with a double of his own past third.

Beachy cruised until the fourth inning. He retired the first 11 hitters he faced, but Aubrey Huff doubled to right with two outs and Buster Posey immediately followed with his fourth home run of the season to tie the game 2-2.

Sanchez settled down after the first. Aside from a pair of two-out walks in the third inning, he didn't allow a single Braves hitter to reach base in his five innings of work.

The Braves jumped ahead of the Giants against their bullpen in the seventh. Brandon Hicks and Prado each drew walks against Jeremy Affeldt in front of Jason Heyward. He saw a 1-2 curveball and crushed it to the deepest part of the park for a three-run homer and a 5-2 lead.

The lead, unfortunately, was short-lived. The Giants put together three straight one-out singles against Jairo Asencio to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh. Miguel Tejada walked to force in a run and a slow groundout by Nate Schierholtz plated another. Aaron Rowand then drove a double to left to score two and give the Giants a 6-5 lead.

Dan Uggla, however, would have none of it. Leading off the eighth, Uggla smashed a deep home run to left off Sergio Romo to re-tie the game. Eric O'Flaherty tossed two scoreless frames to send the game into extra innings.

Brian Wilson pitched a scoreless ninth for the Giants, but ultimately fell in the tenth. He allowed consecutive singles to Heyward and Chipper and walked Uggla to load the bases with no outs. Freddie Freeman struck out and pinch-hitter Eric Hinske hit into a force out, sending Nate McLouth to bat. On a 3-2 pitch, McLouth drove a single into center to score Chipper and Uggla and break the tie. Brian McCann added an insurance run with an RBI single off Dan Runzler. The hit improved McCann to 10 for 13 with RISP.

Jonny Venters pitched a scoreless tenth for his first save of the season.

To be fair…

He was 0-4 in regulation and if not granted an extra at bat to redeem himself would have had an awful game.

1-5 is still sorta bad, but thankfully for us he chose to chip in at the perfect time. I’ll take it!

Yeah, well, you know. That’s just like…your opinion, man.

Ok, that was unfair of me. You’re nowhere near as much of a McLouth hater as some people around here. At least you don’t hope for him to fail just so you have something to gloat about. Too many people around here do that. I shouldn’t lump you in with them.

Hater Pessimist

I hope as hard as anyone that he returns to the form of a productive centerfielder. I just lack faith in him to do so.

But he is chipping away at that pessimism piece by piece. A 1-5 day doesn’t do much to help that, but the timing of his hit was amazing.

Regardless, we swept the Giants! The Braves faced 3 really good pitchers and beat them all. Can’t complain about that one bit.

Yeah, well, you know. That’s just like…your opinion, man.

Just by my eyes, in the beginning of the season, he seemed to a victim of an unlucky BABIP. He seemed to hit a lot of balls on the screws right at someone. As for the walks, pitchers seemed to go after him a bit since Chipper was on deck. Consider me a optimist, but I really do like what I see.

I don’t usually use this as an outlet to vent my frustrations, but Fredi made a bad move by keeping Asencio in WAAAY too long. It was VERY frustrating. This series was hopefully a coming out party for the offense. And what a staff to do it against. Go job guys. Keep it going in San Diego!!!!

Actually...

I might, given that they are not all solo HRs. If he average 1.75 (completely arbitrary btw) runs per hr, he’d have 140RBIS!

by CalBravesFan on Apr 24, 2011 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

But, plenty of players have had 140+ RBI seasons before without hitting a lowly .180.

"Never doubt Derek Lowe's ability to win despite himself."

by EricGreggWasPaidOff on Apr 24, 2011 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Obviously a higher BA would be nice

I’m just saying if he can drive in 140 runs and hit a homerun once every 8 or so ABs, that still has a lot of value (as he showed today). Like someone said earlier, being able to change the game with one swing changes things

by CalBravesFan on Apr 24, 2011 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I suppose, but the ability to not make an out is still vitally important. Having a .180 BA means you make quite a lot of outs…..unless it’s only a tiny number of ABs, with most PAs resulting in a BB (could be possible, if a guy is hitting 80 HRs….pitchers might be slightly afraid of that).

FWIW,

The average # of runners on base for a home run is well below .75… More like .45

So if he hit 80 HRs, I’d expect more like 116 RBI on those homers. Maybe 10 more if our offense starts getting on base at a crazy rate before him.

Sub .200 average aside, Uggla (and Heyward for that matter) proved why having power in the lineup = wins. Leads seem a lot less insurmountable when one swing of the bat can change the tide.

We lost zero power hitters over the offseason (1/6 if you count Glaus) and added 2 in Uggla and Freeman. I’m hoping the hits come a bit more frequently, but let the homers keep flowing.

I can't agree with this...

after watching Wilson violently smash the Phillies’ post season hopes last fall, his beard will forever be one of my favorite sights in baseball.

I watched the final game of the NLCS at a large, public outdoor viewing. For those two innings, it was me and Brian Wilson’s beard against the world.

by MartinMcFly on Apr 25, 2011 2:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm finding the beard thing & all the hype about it rather annoying.

I know baseball has a history of colorful characters, but I’m just not one for players with gimmicks. It could also be that I’m a little bias because I don’t like teams the Braves lose to in playoffs.
My re-cap: What a beautiful sweep. After the Dodger series, even capturing a series win against the World Series champs @ home seemed like to large of an order. The Bravos come through. Heyward’s bat coming alive & the fact, as far as this series anyway, our Tim was better than their Tim made for a great Easter weekend of baseball & a fine birthday present for Chipper.

Kimbrel is a horse, icewater in his veins

he was not sharp. i realize FG was trying to rest some guys but I think he
learned something on sunday.
on saturday hitters had watched alot of tape and went with the pitch,
guiding the ball like rod carew.way to handle Lincecum.

Dear Bud Selig.

I am a Braves fan with one request. I would like the Braves schedule for the remainder of the year to consist of only of double headers with the mets at home, and three game road series against the giants. All kidding aside. Great series! Who saw that coming? Take at least two out of three from the padres and this will be a terrific road trip.Coming in, I would have been happy with a 5-5 record from the California tour. I expect more now. Go Braves!

I really find it funny when people call someone a “hater” or “troll” because they don’t have any faith in Nate McLouth. He’s an average baseball player at best, and he was one of the worst outfielders in the game last year. Excuse us for being realistic when I don’t expect him to have a monster season.

P.S. Yeah he had a nice week and a big hit today, but Nate McLouth’s stat line for 2011 is .247/.333/.325 with a wOBA of .304. Let’s not get too crazy yet. He doesn’t need to slug a ton, but getting on base at at least a .350 clip is going to be a necessity if he hopes to remain a starter.

My faith in Nate isn’t high, but I disagree that all of the comments can be categorized as reasonable skepticism or criticism. Yes, he was godawful last year and probably won’t be what we’d like this year, but I don’t think it’s out of line to question people’s tone when they seem to relish focusing venom on one of our players. Plenty of people are most certainly “hating” and bordering on “trolling”. They make the most irrational and inaccurate arguments about McLouth’s play, then spew insults at him and anyone who defends him. They completely ignore what he’s actually doing this season – it’s all about last season. The only valid criticisms that can really be made about him this season are that he’s not hitting HRs yet, and the one you mentioned – his ABSOLUTELY abysmal arm.

P.S. Quite a few people have straight up admitted to WANTING him to fail.

I didn't see any of this game but the 10th inning.

Heard Heyward’s shot was a blast and that Beachy pitched well. A series sweep in SF is as unexpected as it is delightful, and I’m extremely happy that they pulled it off. Pretty much everyone contributed, too.

Now let’s just not have a letdown in San Diego. They’re obviously not as good as the Giants, but that doesn’t mean we can relax against them.

One thing that got lost in the exciting events

I really love how J-Hey runs the bases. He did a great job in the 10th getting from 1st to 3rd on Chipper’s single. It really set the Braves up to get the go-ahead run easily, but of course it had to get dramatic. Heyward’s speed and baserunning knowledge is another reason why he should work well in the 2.

He's very Winfieldian on the paths.

Fun to watch in a “Look at that volcano!” kind of way.

ESPN

just showed highlights of the game. I can’t even call them highlights. They showed everything but game action.

I'm sure

they had their reasons…not sure what those reasons would be…or if they were anything but trivial reasons, but I’m sure they had them.

K/W Effect: any current lead is equal to or less than the amount of runs surrendered by your closer when effect is active. The way in which these runs are surrendered is the variable and is everchanging.

They had to show ARod eating a crab cake.

Priorities.

Things to do at a ball game

1. Get engaged
2. Catch a foul ball with a baby in one arm
3. Put a cup on someone’s hat
4. Show a highlight of a 10th inning RBI single and ignore a rookie striking out 7 in 6 innings while giving up only 2 hits, ignore a 3-run blast by last year’s should-be ROY, ignore a monster HR by Uggla, ignore a monster HR by last year’s ROY.

Honestly, who watches ESPN to see actual sports highlights?

I’m just thrilled that they had 3 different segments devoted to the Boston Celtics winning their series, at least 2 segments devoted to Lebron James missing last-second shots, and 2 segments on the Cincy/St Louis game.

The highlights of a 2010 playoff matchup in which every game was decided by 1 run? Pssssshhhh.

Watching ESPN and expecting valuable information on sporting events is like watching TMZ and expecting a great film critique.

Man, if we could’ve just had a halfway healthy team in the playoffs against the Giants last year, and/or avoided the umpiring shiv, who knows what could’ve happened…We are the better team.

The Braves bullpen during the 6th and 7th inningS

will make me go INSANE with stress for the rest of the season. I can already feel it. Terrible feeling. I honestly don’t think there is a way to fix this without running Venters and Moylan ragged, aka the Coxian way. Maybe I am overreacting and things will get better. Until then, I am on pins and needles.

I think we should call a truce with all of this McLouth stuff and let the season play out. Lets focus on more important things. Like ppl in our bullpen not named Kimbrel, Venters, Moylan, and o’Flaherty.

Anyone notice Beachy is leading our staff with 31k’s? Tommy is behind him at 24

It’s early and anything might happen, but Beachy is looking really good. Some how, some way, I hope he misses Philly in May. Seems like he might need some more success under his belt before facing them again. I believe a confident Beachy can take them down.

Is he really a K pitcher? My fantasy team is loving him so far, but is this a mirage or the real deal? I had never heard him described as having a K pitch or being a 200K candidate.

He was prolific

in getting K’s in the minors. He averaged nearly 10 (9.9) K/9. Him getting K’s is not a mirage. It’s actually a really positive sign that he’s continuing that trend in the Majors.

I’m pleasantly surprised as well. When I looked I believe he was 12th in the league I’m K’s. Halladay leads with 39
