This may be blasphemy, but acquire David Wright?

VIA MLBTRADERUMORS (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/04/east-notes-wright-salty-bixler-a-rod.html)

"Mets third baseman David Wright's days in New York may be winding down, writes Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com. The Mets, who may be in full-on rebuild mode as soon as midseason, could opt to trade Wright because he is signed to team-favorable terms through 2013 and would therefore yield a better haul in a trade than Jose ReyesCarlos Beltran or Francisco Rodriguez, writes Rubin. That the Mets could entertain this is indicative of how far they've fallen the past couple years; it once seemed likely Wright would spend his entire career in Queens."

Star-divide

He would cost a fortune, but he hits for average, steals bases and has 30 home run power.  He is only 28.

Is this something Braves fans would be interested in?  I would be, considering we have nothing in the pipeline for Chipper's replacement.

Maybe Beachy/Minor, Delgado, Lipka and PTBNL?

He would cost that and maybe more. He’s a very above average player who is also solid on defense.

If that is all it took I wouldn’t really have any problem with it other than where does he play. Chipper should move to first but Freeman is playing well.

no. LF is what was the catalyst, some would argue, in Chipper’s inability to consistently play in 130+ games since 2004. I like Wright okay, but there would be nowhere to put Chipper. Maybe have Wright pick up a new position until Chipper calls it quits

Why ask Chipper to move. Wright is the younger of the two. Let him adapt to the different position. Then when Chipper hangs them up move Wright back to 3rd. Would love to see Wright with a tomahawk across his chest.

I don't think Wright is a good solution...

I have been a huge proponent of another versatile 3B type in Boston who is not only younger but might have a higher ceiling…

I don’t think Wright is consistent and while I’m sure he’s a great guy… I don’t want to give up what it would take to get him, especially to the muts… I’d shoot myself if we Teixiera’d ourselves w/in our own division… :(

Aside from position flexibility

which I value quite a bit… I’d venture to say that Wright has already produced his best year and reached his peak…

To say Lowrie could match it and provide sustained performance at that level… I’d have a hard time not believing it…

I am NOT saying he is a better player at this moment than Wright… but in terms of flexibility both in payroll and what we’d have to give up in the deal… I think Lowrie is a better option both because he is younger and because he can fill in across the diamond for us.

We would be able to change up our bench a bit as well…

again, it could just be my mancrush on Lowrie, one day I will actually pull out the stats and see if I can base my thoughts in fact. :-) Maybe I’ll use UZR. hehe

Although I miss Saltalamacchia and his funny jersey, there has to be balance in it. Instead of giving them Beachy, we should give them another backup infielder, say, Omar Infante, oh wait! Of course, we traded him away for a guy who will hit .180 with 30 home runs. Beachy is doing good, and I don’t want to trade him away. But if we have to, I want to move Rodrigo Lopez into the five hole rather than Minor. Lopez has tore up AAA and deserves to be in MLB, although Minor was the International League’s Pitcher of the Week.

Because his BABIP is .172.. You would like to see the walks come back to more than 10% like they have for his entire career. He is striking out less and his ISO is right in line with his career average. Some better walks and a bit more patience and he’s back to his normal numbers. Much more likely that happens than he continues to have a .172 BABIP, which would be the lowest in major league history — dating back to the start of the live ball era. Next lowest was Aaron Hill last year at .196.

Well, not really. Right now, he is the worst at the balls that he makes contact with falling in for hits. This could be signs of weak ground balls, or it could be signs of bad luck – hitting them where they are instead of where they aren’t.

Due to the fact that he has 5 HR, I don’t think the answer is that he is hitting balls weakly.

Mostly, he is popping up, which indicates either he is swinging up on the ball, or that his timing is a bit off – which are things that tend to happen, especially early in a season.

Several reasons

1) He’s usually bad in April, which makes the SSS you’re arguing with even more ridiculous.
2) He’s, what, 31? We may not expect a peak year, but there’s no reason to think that he’ll just stop producing altogether.
3) He’s got a .172 BABIP so far this year. Some of it has to do with his approach at the plate, but a lot of it is just bad luck when he makes contact with balls. It’ll level out eventually.

Nah

If Wright were a Brave in the future, I’d be able to cheer for the guy fairly easily. He might be a Met, but he’s kept his head held high in the right for pretty much his whole career.

He’s had more PAs against the Braves than any team in baseball, but it’s not like he’s a bonafide Braves killer. His numbers are okay-to-good depending on whom you ask (.261/.824OPS), but for almost every one homer he’s hit against a frequent division opponent, he’s struck out four times. He was probably the guy happiest when John Smoltz was out of the picture (.217/25K in in 55PA).

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

by mrsoprano on Apr 24, 2011 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not that comparable of a situation. Third base isn’t the position in baseball. You can find an adequate free agent to fill the position or move Prado in and sign a left fielder. We don’t need a replacement until he announces he’s gone. Developing a quarterback is different.

Twitter: @Ben_Duronio Stop calling Tommy Hanson "Big Red"

by BenDuronio on Apr 24, 2011 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

actually

I was thinking more along the lines of…

The braves would most likely like to bring in a potential replacement, but how do you do that without offending him? I mean, its not like we can draft a 3b and hope he is ready next year or the year after… developing talent in baseball can take years.

Yeah 3B is not akin to QB in baseball, but you could argue that without a power bat at 3b when we already do not have a prototype power bat at 1b or in LF, then you might have a team production problem.

So you either make a move now, and strike while the iron is hot, or you wait till he retires and hope to “patch” the hole.
The Packers decided to strike, and even though it was a PR nightmare (until the REAL Brett Favre reared his head and erased that problem for GB), they made the right decision.

Sorry, but not only is this unrealistic, but I also don’t like the idea of it at all. Wright just hasn’t been the same guy since his concussion. It’s funny how guys like Dunn and Reynolds get bashed for striking out too much, when Wright is almost as bad.

It may not happen in the national media much, because the national media seldom says anything positive about the Mets, but in the local media Wright gets killed far too frequently for not being “clutch” and striking out all of the time. Unwarranted due to the numbers he puts up every season, but it does happen frequently. They get on Beltran a ton too, which I also feel is unwarranted. Most Met fans I talk to actually get upset when I speak of Beltran in good light.

David Wright and Matt Kemp are two players I wish one day could play in a Braves uniform.

With a versatile Prado, Chipper’s defense is not necessarily what would be needed to be replaced, but more his presence in the line-up. It is possible that next year Heyward will be in the three-hole (I say “possible”, “more than likely” in fact), but that means Heyward’s production from the 2/6 spot is missing. Trading for a guy like Wright or Kemp erases that.

I imagine a package of Jurrjens, Vizcaino, Bethancourt, Lipka and Schafer should be enough for either team.

Everyone gets two free stupid comments. After that, I start charging.

by Wren_and_Stimpy on Apr 24, 2011 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

I doubt that package...

…even gets you in the door. JJ is too expensive to give back in a salary dump; Vizcaino is good, but with questionable health, Bethancourt hasn’t hit in full season ball yet, Lipka cannot be traded yet, and Schafer won’t have trade value until he shows he can stay healthy and hit major league pitching.

As for Wright; we have no room to add $14 million in payroll for this year. Not going to happen.

I like Wright as a player; I think he’d definitely be a plus overall, but I don’t like the idea of signing him at what would be the peak contract time of his baseball life. Maybe it’s “team friendly” now (according to MLBTR’s words), but if you’re gonna make the sizable investment to get him, it can’t be for a short-term rental period.

IOW, the timing just isn’t right (no pun intended). If he were, say 25 or 26 and this were 2013, then I’m all over it. Along with 28 other teams, of course.

I want to respond intelligently to this but I just can’t. Beltran isn’t an answer to anyone’s question right now. He’s better than a 4th OFer but he’s overpaid and you can’t utilize him on a daily basis without wondering what part of his body will fall off…
