Interesting request for David Ross
So, I've been scouting a few players for my fantasy league (instant credibility loss... i know but keep reading) and I came across something that was quiet interesting...
WARNING: This may be fringe rosterbation so my apologies...
Apparently there is some clamor for a new Red Sox catcher and the fans over there have interest in our David Ross. One poster went so far as to say something that sounded like music to my ears... Jed Lowrie... Regardless of how delusion that person may be, perhaps we have found that ingredient to get talks started with the Red Sox...
I know we all love Ross and he's the absolute best back-up catcher in the league but if we had a shot at a player like Lowrie for him... Shouldn't FW consider it?
Just thought I'd share some thoughts from across the blogosphere...

Ross for Lowrie and Salty is something I’d consider.
If we’re not going to use him, we may as well get Salty back, get a good infielder
I think its a bit ambitious to expect both Lowrie and Salty
to come back… but if that were the deal, I would probably crap my pants…
Wonder if they’d consider KK as AAA depth for their starting rotation? Then again, it’s not like KK is lighting up the world in AA. :(

If Ross leaves
our clubhouse chemistry is severely wounded.

We still have Hinske.

Would having Lowrie and Salty around
really cause that much commotion? I’d be willing to bet the guys would love to see Salty back… Not to mention, we have this guy named Chipper Jones who’s pretty good in the clubhouse too… :-)

Responding to my own post as a way to answer all of you at once :P
Whenever anybody talks about the way our clubhouse works, Ross is always the first name mentioned (although he’s occasionally mentioned along with other guys; e.g. “Ross and Hinske”). That leads me to think that he’s more important to the team’s camaraderie than Hinske, or Medlen, or Moylan, or Infante.
All that said; I’m obviously not saying we hang on to David Ross at all costs. Just pointing out that his intangibles may make it hard for us to get a truly fair trade for him.

Didn't a guy named Garrett Anderson have intangibles?
Just sayin’ :-)

If the Braves can turn an Infante/ Dunn for Uggla type trade for their backup catcher, they will do it in a second. Ross is the best backup catcher, but he’s still a backup who could easily start elsewhere. Will be interesting to see if the Braves think along the same lines with such an easily tradable contract to work with.
So... if this deal were consumated...
where would we play Jed Lowrie? He can play any IF position… Do we just rotate him around like we have discussed doing w/ Prado… Basically let Prado stay in LF and 4 days a week, we shuffle Lowrie around the IF, perhaps twice a week at 3B to give him almost a full week of ABs?
Or, do we explore moving Gonzalez for a BP piece or CF?
We’d move him around. This would be more of a move for 2012, we could let A-Gon go then.
One option would be this, if you wanted to get REALLY crazy
Ross, McLouth, Beachy or Minor for Ellsbury, Salty, and Lowrie.
Salty doesn’t have much value right now BTW, but he’s probably better then Boscan.
Ellsbury...
while, I’d love to have him… The BoSox faithful would bring their pitchforks and torches to FW’s office if he pulled off a move like that… To get Ellsbury, one of our prized possessions would have to be involved…
I’d be happy w/ Lowrie and Salty for Ross and a fringe prospect… Maybe a Beachy…
Appreciate the opinion but methinks you undervalue Ellsbury just a bit. :-) I would love to have him though.

I think Boston and you overvalue Ellsbury.
Ellsbury has yet to post an OPS+ of 100 or more (i.e. league average), he has little power (career SLG of .406 playing half his games in a friendly park for hitters) and he doesn’t get on base at a great rate (.342 career OBP). All he does is steal bases, which is nice, but not that important. If we did get him, he should bat near the end of the order, not at the top where we would put him.
Eh...
fair opinion and I probably do… But having been watching the game for quite a few years, I see what type of player Ellsbury can be and he’s not far from getting that “click” and turning into a stud for the next 10 years. That’s merely my opinion and I’m far from a professional scout.

I’d be willing to upgrade from Beachy to Jurrjens, but don’t the Red Sox have enough starting pitching? (why a trade is unlikely I think)
They have been looking to upgrade their SP because of some struggles..
but of course, the SSS on the season has started to reverse course and Dice-K has dominated his last two starts. So perhaps they are backing off that. They don’t have much rotation depth though… So they may like to have a Minor or Lopez in AAA… or of course KK. :-) But that would bring us back to the not giving them enough… who knows really.

Lowrie is freakin raking it too. He’s on my fantasy team. If you could get Lowire, you do it in a heart beat but that would never happen

I've been following him for 3 years....
I am really trying not to inundate the threads with my obvious obsession… but at this point, he’s making it hard not to talk about him, especially if the Sox see him as expendable.

While I do love David Ross.....
and he is a great contributor for the Braves team [RH Bat, great defensive catcher (good arm, and solid game caller), and he is one of the best clubhouse guys this team has], if a trade came up say Rossy, One of KK or R.Lopez, and a Carloz Perez and/or C plus to B prospect), for Ellsbury and Salty, with no second thoughts I would do it in a heartbeat, if possibly quicker.
I do love Ross’ overall demeanor, hardhat-lunchpail working attitude, willingness to help others on the team, ability to spot-start with minimal loss of talent offensively and an actual gain defensively, but a CF with speed like Ellsbury’s, his knack for getting on base, gap to gap power, ability to hit where the balls pitched, and solid defensive skills, jesus would look mighty freaking wonderful in CF.
Please note: As ridiculous as this trade maybe, and I don’t believe this trade would be accepted, I am just responding to the above mentioned proposals.
Would I take Ross for Lawrie, straight up, no. to answer the question.
Rossy, and KK/R.Lopez for Lawrie and Salty, yeah, but really a pointless trade for Atl.
I’m sure Boston can find their catcher via trade market, at or before the deadline, if they still are not satisfied with Salty’s production, etc.
This whole conversation brings me back to a thought I had about this past offseason, and one minor transaction, where I actually believed Boston really lost out on to New York. The acquisition of R.Martin. Excellent pick-up for NewYork major loss for Boston.
Lowrie... not to be mistaken for Lawrie in the Blue Jays system
Thanks for your perspective… I will tell you Martin was a huge gamble. I believed in him but I question his character. I do not question his offensive production. I think he COULD be a Posada type… Play catcher for a few years and then shift over to DH. His bat is pretty darn good.

thats brett lawrie? but yea i meant lowrie.
i thought of it being significant at the time, but of course depending on salty’s performance nd if r. martin could bounce back, but i guess so far so good for the yanks, and not so much for boston, i thought suprisingly new york actually had a great offseason with the additions of r.martin, andruw jones, eric chavez,b.colon, freddy garcia, these were all nonsexy moves (usually the braves make a few of these trying to bring in former good players to revitalize their careers) but it really has panned out quite well for new york.
and my personal opinion on r.martin is that ive always hated him, lol. well never liked to say the least, he always seemingly either did good against the braves or hit well when it counted.
but i thought boston needed him more,n lost out on a significantly overlooked offseason move

I don't believe Boston did a bad thing
trusting their catching duties to a former top prospect who showed signs of being a good, cheap solution at the position.
I have always loved Salty. He just hasn’t put it together defensively and he is a AAAA offensive hitter. It’s heartbreaking to me but at least Boston had the cajones to give the kid a shot at being something special.
Maybe out of the pressure of the AL Beast, and the shadow of the Legend Varitek, he can reclaim some of his promise.
