Around SBN: LeBron James Laughs In Kevin Garnett's Face

Chipper, once again, talks about the 1st inning woes.

Via DOB:On falling behind early

"Yeah, we just got blitzed again, first and second inning. You saw the intensity in the at-bats in the first couple of innings, and then we fell behind 5-1 or 6-1, and there’s no telling from then on how many at-bats were wasted.

"I thought we squared up a lot more balls than the line score indicates. But the bottom line is, we’ve got to get through the first couple of innings still in the game."

On Lowe

"I don’t know if [he was affected] by three days’ rest or whatever, but he just seemed to be struggling with command. With the exception of a couple of balls that Ethier hit, he wasn’t hit hard. I don’t remember another ball on the barrel to be honest with you, other than Ethier’s. That’s baseball. You’ve just got to keep going out there and maybe we’ll get those breaks tomorrow."

As a captain of this team, he seems to be doing some finger-pointing, then doing some retreating. No matter the result last night, ultimately the pitching hasn't been the problem and it seems like Chipper is focussing on the wrong issues. Frustration reads differently from viewer to viewer. How do you guys see Chipper's comments?

I see

Chipper is just saying it straight the way he sees it. We as fans shouldn’t be acting desperate, and chipper isn’t either. you can tell he’s still optimistic and wants the games to fall as they may. and so should every braves fan.

DOB's spin is kind of evident there.

DOB’s been harping lately on how bad we’ve looked in the first few innings, and the questions he asked “What was it like falling behind early like that?,” “What’d you think of Derek Lowe’s performance?.” kind of highlight that, I think.

Agreed.

Chicks dig the long ball.

DOB: Did you ever hit balls as hard as Jason Heyward does?
Chipper: Is that possible?

by kimrob1 on Apr 21, 2011 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

What’d you think of Derek Lowe’s performance?

That’s not spin, that’s an honest question. Spin would be something like: What’d you think of Lowe’s rough outing today? or How did Lowe’s ineffectiveness affect the team?

The fact that he asked that question, and printed that response

…while either not asking or simply choosing not to print the response to a question about why the bats are still asleep; that is the spin.

He asked every hitter in the blog post about falling behind early (some answered from the perspective of giving up runs, others answered from the perspective of not hitting enough), as well as about how effective Garland was against them. Sounds like he hit both pitching and offense.

He asked every hitter in the blog post about falling behind early

Which is one of the reasons I say he’s focusing on that, yeah. You can talk about not scoring, as some of them did, but the reason you fell behind early is always going to be pitching and/or defense; not your offense.

as well as about how effective Garland was against them.

…except for Chipper; or, for whatever reason, he didn’t print Chipper’s response to such a question. So it’s not fair to say that Chipper’s dumping on the pitching, when the only offensive question he was asked (that was printed) was “so what do yout hink about Heyward?”

Oh im not dumping on Chip

I dont really see a problem with anything that was said. But I also dont have a problem with any of DOB’s questions. More than likely, he only had a few minutes to talk and chose not to ask Chip about falling behind because he had already asked everyone else and had enough material on the matter.

I don't have a problem with DOB's questions, either

just saying, what gets said in an interview is going to depend on what gets asked in an interview. :)

I don’t understand how Chipper is “calling anyone out” or “retreating” from anything he said…

I hate the information age – people are always trying to make a story when there isn’t one.

Did you hear?

I heard that Justin hates DOB.

I am bi-winning. I win not only here but also there.

by Jman781 on Apr 21, 2011 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Chipper, 2 days prior, had discussed 1st inning woes that the starting pitchers are having and how it has affected the lineup. To bring it up twice in 3 days is news and there is a story here. Whether you don’t like DOB (which is understandable) or whether you don’t like the fact that I fanshotted this quote, Chipper’s trying to say something. He’s placing blame on the pitching staff for creating a deficit that a discouraged offense can’t rally from.

What I hate is when people take personal vendettas out on blogs rather than actually trying to understand the information, and justin, you are the ring leader in personal vendettas.

This is his quote after Monday’s loss:

"I think our problem right now is we’re having problems getting through the first inning," the veteran third baseman said. "We’re down 2 or 3 to nothing in the first, and when you’ve got an offense that’s struggling, that’s like 8 or 10 [runs]."

Just Beachy here. How 'bout you?

by ryan c on Apr 21, 2011 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I really think you're assigning too much importance to this.

I also don’t think there are any personal vendettas going around. I haven’t said anything about disliking DOB, just that his own perceptions of “what’s wrong” are going to color the interviews he has with the players (and how he presents the results of those interviews later).

The truth is, the team has struggled in the early innings, and that’s had a negative impact because it’s put more pressure on an already struggling offense. That’s what’s true, whether you like it or not. Chipper making that observation isn’t “pointing fingers” or “focusing on the wrong issues,” he’s just saying “Yeah, that hasn’t helped much” when DOB asks him about it.

The fact that he follows it up with “But that’s baseball, we’ll get them tomorrow” is also a pretty good indicator that he’s not blaming people. When you blame people, you say “we need to fix this,” not “we’ll start getting the breaks eventually.”

Personal vendettas? Good grief. First, I’m an Obama-hating, tax-loving anti-ACORN person, and now I am the ring leader of personal vendettas.

What did I take personally in my post?

The personal vendetta doesn’t come from the disagreement in opinion, rather from Justin’s impeccable quote: "I don’t understand how Chipper is "calling anyone out" or "retreating" from anything he said…

I hate the information age – people are always trying to make a story when there isn’t one."

justin knew who he was attacking…

On Chipper:
Personally, I think thigs like this need to be said. However, he has always went about answering questions and never really faults himself as an individual player.

Just Beachy here. How 'bout you?

by ryan c on Apr 21, 2011 1:44 PM EDT reply actions

Attacking? Seriously?

So, if I disagree with something and think you are reading too much into it, that’s now a personal attack?

sorry for the misinterpretation. you’ve attacked me quite a few times. i’m justified to be a bit hypersensitive to justin.

by ryan c on Apr 21, 2011 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't read that as an attack

just an observation about what happens in the new world of sound bytes and interview excerpts. But let’s not turn this into another “KK is on the DL” thread :)

Personally, I think thigs like this need to be said. However, he has always went about answering questions and never really faults himself as an individual player.

I don’t have any extensive knowledge about how Chipper handles himself in interviews, but I have yet to see anything this year that indicates to me that he’s being selfish or thinks too highly of his own abilities. If DOB (or whoever else) had asked him about the problems with the offense, I’m sure he’d have been admitting troubles right up there with the rest of them.

I've watched Chipper my entire life...

and he’s my favorite player to ever play the game, but I’ve not once ever heard him say that something was his fault (not saying that last night’s loss was his fault).

McCann, on the other hand, is quite the opposite. There have been numerous times where he’s taken the loss on his back because of underperformance.

Just Beachy here. How 'bout you?

by ryan c on Apr 21, 2011 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

So...

do you think he’s blaming things on pitching? Or are you upset that he’s not saying “yeah, if I’d played better, we might’ve won it?”

Not really either...

just wondering how other people on the blog read Chipper’s thoughts. I thought the first time he mentioned something of this nature it was nothing, but he brought it up again.

I think you're a little off base on this one.

by Doghnut on Apr 21, 2011 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Who was he attacking? Seriously, was it DOB? Maybe I’m just stupid.

Chipper is not saying anything special. What Chipper is saying is so irrelevant, I can’t even put it into words. It’s like asking someone “how do you feel?” after a loss. Is anyone ever going to say anything other than “it’s tough; we didn’t get it together; etc etc”??

It’s not exactly rocket science to understand that it’s a bit unnerving to try to get runs when you’re already down. It changes people’s mindsets; that’s just how humans are. Instead of thinking, “ok, the score is 0-0, let’s get some runz!” it becomes “ok, the score is 5-0, we need runs omg”…there’s a slight panic there, especially as the game progresses. This is so normal that I don’t even know what else to say.

Chicks dig the long ball.
