Losing Sucks, But Being A Jerk Sucks Even More

Hey everyone, it's come to my attention that some folks have been commenting and posting pictures that are inappropriate. There are rules and guidelines for Talking Chop, and I would encourage everyone to review them and abide by them -- they can be found by clicking here, and are always available via a link on the front page.

Invariably it happens that whenever the Braves go through a slump (as they seem to be in now) the natives get restless. It's easy to lash out, but let's try not to be a jerk about it. Posting winy FanPosts about how you're taking your cutesy posting talents to another blog because a moderator warned you, makes you look like an idiot.

I've instructed the moderators on this site to use a zero tolerance policy if they wish, and ban folks without warning. These can be 48 hour bans in which you must email me to be reinstated, or they can be for much longer.

Basically, I'd like everyone to act their age. And if you happen to be under 21, then act like an adult. Practice does not make perfect, practice makes permanent, and if you're someone who continues to act like a child then that's how you'll be treated.

For those of you who follow the rules, thank you. If you ever have any problems with another poster please don't hesitate to email me and let me know.

Oh, and the Braves record at this time last year was 8-and-8, a one game difference from our current 7-and-9 record. Come in off the ledge, and simmer down.

This FanPost does not express the views or opinions of Talking Chop.

Thanks for the post, gondeee

I just wanted to say that I was a little alarmed at TradeAndruw’s fanpost, as some of his claims seemed to be a little too strict, even for a no-tolerance policy. But as I said there, this is ultimately your blog and no one else’s, so whatever policy you want is the policy that should be followed.

Thanks for responding though, because I know I’m not the only one who was starting to wonder if someone had gotten a little too banhammer/warn happy or if it was all sanctioned.

The only thing I would suggest (bc, you know, you asked for suggestions) is that maybe we add a section to the rules about pictures, not just against posting pics of random naked girls, but also of sizing and including a subject line so they are collapsible.

I think Gondee is saying we will miss the playoffs by one game. we are one game behind pace from last year and made the playoffs by one game, therego we will no longer be making the playoffs this year, which is disappointing, but at least we can start to look forward to 2012 (and the end of the world)

Regarding your April comments

I had to constantly remind panic-laden fans in the early season to calm. The Braves during “the streak” were not always a good April team:

1991: 8-10
1992: 11-11
1993: 12-13
1995: 4-1
1996: 16-11
1997: 19-6
1998: 18-9
1999: 15-7
2000: 18-6
2001: 12-14
2002: 12-15
2003: 17-10
2004: 11-10
2005: 14-10
and last season 2010: 9-14

In other words, in the next 7 games, the team would have to go 2-5 in order to match last season’s record at the same point.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

Come to think of it...

it seems like more often than not over this last 20+ year run, the team has struggled in April before ultimately getting things on track and making a run to the post season.

http://sportsandgrits.blogspot.com/

by Mr. Sanchez on Apr 19, 2011 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Um...

Where did you read that every April was bad? I stated that we were “not always” a great April team. There are some excellent Aprils in there, but look at that collection of records, especially years like last season, 1993, 2001, and 2002, and you realize that a very good finish to the season can come from a rough April. Heck, that 1993 team nearly won 105 games!

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

by biggentleben on Apr 20, 2011 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions

I definitely had that perception. In fact, I was shocked to see so many good April’s on the list above.

I wonder how many of those started out like this one and ended up being decent after a good run at the end of the month?

As I recall

some seasons we dominated right out of the gate and other seasons we got off to a ~.500 start and usually heated up and went on some ridiculous streak in July to either close the gap or overtake first place. When we didn’t get off to a good start, it seemed like there would be a two or three week stretch at some point during the middle of the season where we’d win 14 out of 16 or something like that.

by CMassey on Apr 19, 2011 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

I always thought we peaked too early. Seems to make sense that the only year we won the WS was the strike shortened season. Though, ofc, the season wasn’t all that short.

I was young (pre-teen) for most of the streak, so I didn’t understand certain things like peaking too early or resting veterans (a 10 year old with endless energy doesn’t rest). Looking back on it, we did peak too early for many of those seasons and cruised into the playoffs with no momentum.

No, I didn't forget

If you read the years in that post, those are the years since 1991 that the Braves have made the postseason. There was not a postseason in 1994, so there was not reason to post it.

by biggentleben on Apr 24, 2011 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

1994 did in fact, take place, was during the streak, and there was in fact baseball played in April, and since this is a post discussing previous April records, it certainly ought to be included. The strike doesn’t really have a single thing to do with what happened that particular month of that particular year.

Every season since Ive been here (and Ive been a member a long time and was a lurker longer before that…I mean back on the old site before SBN where we might have 5 comments on a thread), there comes a time when I leave TC during the season. It’s usually for 1-3 months during the season when it gets really, really negative. Then I come back later and it’s great again.

So far, it hasnt gotten like that this season. But I suspect that’s because Ive only been able to watch 2 or 3 games and have only participated in 1 or 2 game threads, so Ive missed a lot of the negativity.

To be honest, I actually like the blog a lot more during the off season. Things are much more upbeat.

In all seriousness, yes, it has really started to bug me how much Fredi has been criticized after only 16 games around here. The lineup in particular… I mean, no matter how much the ‘beating a dead horse’ phrase gets tossed around, people just don’t get it and continue to harp on it. I know I’m guilty of the occasional whiny comment, but I know I’m definitely not as bad as some other posters that comment negatively about someone on the team every time something goes wrong (for example, Nate is not going to get a hit every time he steps up to the plate, so why do we have to see ‘Nate sucks bring up Schafer’ every time he grounds out?).

Thanks a lot for making it clear what is acceptable and what isn’t around here (not like it wasn’t beforehand; this post just makes it impossible for the warned/banned to complain).

NO ONE would EVER look at them. Their are certain things people would enjoy if they were just posted here, that they wouldnt bother to view through a link, unsure what they’d be getting or what damage they could do to their computer. Now, in what proportion that is to the images that have been getting posted and are offending people, I will freely admit I do not know, But what would the game threads be without llamasaurus? Would that have even caught on?

My proposal would involve a system of rules for posting pictures that would include sizing guidelines, mandatory subject lines, content, etc. If any of these were broken an attending moderaor could issue a ban for a time that would be pre-determined and posted along with the rules in a recomended fanpost. What I would NOT enjoy, is if someone who is not even a fan of our team first and foremost starts dictating the policies here.

Just not appropriate for the topic...

If I were to have animated gifs of boobs bouncing around all over my work computer screen, I’m liable to get in trouble. Not so much of an ordeal if it’s clogged with galloping rainbow llamasauruses.

Beyond that, it’s juvenile and uncouth.

I definitely enjoy catching a bounce or two every now and again, but this simply isn’t the place for it. There are literally millions of sites specializing in these types of images (sfw and nsfw alike) that I can run into without even searching it out…why does it need to be here??

Rather than asking why it’s offensive, perhaps you should ask yourself what you’re adding to this site, in general, and the thread these images are posted in. Beyond a immature leer or two and a shared expression of wonderment amongst the three people that haven’t seen the animated elmo boob lady, I imagine you’re not adding anything at all.

That's because it's not that bad.

How about a gif of bouncing male uh…. parts? Actually there are some much more revealing photos of Gabe Kaplan (the guy above) that I found, but I didn’t use them because they were inappropriate. There’s a line there, and it’s really not that hard to figure out where that line is. In the original post the picture of Scarlett Johanson was not over the line.

So, because the picture above has no effect on you, doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be affected by pictures of almost nude women on a baseball blog. I come here to be a part of a community united by their affection for the Atlanta Braves. It is a Braves blog. If I wanted to be bombarded with NSFW pictures and gifs of women, then I would go to a site where those are commonplace. I understand there are many such sites … probably a lot more of them than Braves baseball sites. I think the assertion that I should have to put up with anything and everything that “guys like” because this is a baseball blog is about the silliest thing I’ve ever heard. Baseball is not the exclusive property of the male sex, contrary to what Rob Dibble may think.

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. I was in no way saying women should be excluded from full and active participation in the blog but they should also realize that there is a tiny, small chance that a predominantly male community that on average spends a rather long time on the internet might post the random picture of a woman. And if that is how the community wants to interact then it should only be at the discretion of the moderators to limit these interactions.

I would definitely say that the above picture is almost exactly comparable to the pictures of katy perry jumping up and down posted in the thread. Both show off the body as the primary attraction except the above picture has more clothing. You will have no problem posting those images and you shouldn’t. I’m all for equality I just think that people’s subjective worldview shouldn’t define the fine line that both sexes have the right to approach.

I didn’t mean that to be as intense as it sounded. You are welcome and valued community in my eyes. But that doesn’t mean that your sensibilities and interests match the communities or that yours should trump others. The point I was trying to make is that your comfort shouldn’t trump a TC’ers ability to “express” themselves however they want. I’m obviously not talking about nudity or things that most people would call “outside of the pale” but I don’t think some of the things you are referring to, even an accidentally gigantic picture of the lovely scarlett johansson (which is not nearly as graphic as the pictures plastered on the front cover of countlessly crude magazines at your local grocery store’s check out line) fit the bill.

I really don’t mean to sound combative but I hope that you don’t allow a few unsavory occurrences ruin your whole experience or even affect you at all. I hope it isn’t a “see no evil, hear no evil” thing because if so be careful on this internet thing.

by GumpBrave on Apr 19, 2011 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

For what little I may add to this dialogue, I’m not offended so much as bored by the practice. And I don’t necessarily want equal time and space to post pictures of hot guys because that’s not really what I come here to do.

I think the idea might be that, in this age, there are so many places online to gawk at scantily-clad people. But there are very few in which you can converse with your peers about the Braves in real-time. There are many reasons people come to TC, from statistical analysis to gamethreads to general conviviality. I doubt cleavage is one of those reasons.

It’s not an epic struggle of ideology or free speech. We’re not writing the Constitution here. There shouldn’t be anything wrong with staring at breasts on one site and talking about baseball (more or less) on the other.

I appreciate the back and forth.

But I see a lot of assumptions that simply aren’t true.

I never said I was offended.

I never asked that anyone remove a post made (you can’t delete anything after it’s posted).

The purpose of my comments were – simply to ask that people who want to share some what may consider “risque” images think about being courteous and doing so via a clickable LINK. I never said not to post them at all. I was simply trying to speak on behalf of those on TC who might be connecting from work, around young kids, and/or who might not want to see it.

You keep mentioning it, but the ScarJo photo was not the proverbial “straw”, and my “Playboy thread” comment was truly tongue-in-cheek.

But, I think even the most ardent fan of big tits had to wonder if the pair swinging like a pair of bull testicles in a rodeo that someone posted the other day wasn’t a bit much.

I didn’t participate in the thread being discussed, so “the pair swinging like a pair of bull testicles” sounds as if there was nudity involved because usually clothing restricts such movement. I’m a 27 year old, emphatically heterosexual male; or as you would put it, “the most ardent fan of big tits.” Having said that, this is not a site where I consider nudity, or any pics/gifs not suited for cable tv, acceptable. There are minors that participate these threads, we should keep that in mind.

Its a trick I learned from you. You did imply that I was a cancer on the community, that I am somehow self involved and acting arrogantly by putting my rights above others (complete fabrication) and then stated something completely false.

You also said that I have to gawk at pictures of girls online to make up for a lack of the flesh and blood version. So before you lecture me about letting the truth get in the way of anything why don’t you realize it was your misinformation and the fact that you let a misguided and incorrect perception inform you of things that simply aren’t true.

If you are going to tell me that you didn’t mean to characterize me negatively in either of the two posts you made on the subject or that there wasn’t any animosity well I’m not buying it.

You obviously didn’t read anything I wrote at all and simply jumped to your own misinformed decisions. You are definitely not the victim and would be better served sticking with saying how wrong you were in the original post instead of backtracking to criticize me in other ways.

Ahh....

I guess you think if you keep repeating something it will make it true. I know what I said, and since it’s all there in black and white, there’s really not much point in arguing about it — anyone who wants to can scroll up and read it. I said I was incorrect about about you posting the gifs as soon as you pointed it out to me. Saying I “obviously didn’t read anything you wrote at all and jumped to my own misinformed decisions” is very ironic, in that you are jumping to the incorrect conclusion that I would comment on anything I had not read. You do seem very capable of reading an amazing number of things into some statements I made. It’s almost enough to make me think the gentleman doth protest too much.

Oh, look she tried to make a point subtly? Thats impressive.

The point I’m making is that you based what I interpreted as a personal attack on incorrect information. Rather than being so defensive apologize because we both know that when you said “basically, get over yourself” you didn’t mean it as a nice thing. Quit trying to kid yourself.

Also, you were incorrect on my points on several occasions leading me to believe you either didn’t read or didn’t understand my points. If that is the case then there is really no reason for you to be in this discussion.

All in all, a clever way to backtrack, play defense and be completely non-responsive to everything I posted.

Since we are playing drug store psychologist, I wonder why you had such a problem with pictures of really attractive girls while none of us have problems with you posting a picture of what you deem an attractive guy as a retaliation. I don’t “protest too much” I tried to get the sentiment of your statement.

Please do something you haven’t tried to do this conversation and explain to me exactly what your thoughts and feelings were when you posted to me. I imagine it was quick because you couldn’t be bothered with things like “fact checks” or “reading” so please try to capture that moment for me.

Well in my defense she did post a reply directly to one of my messages and since she has stopped adding anything helpful to the discussion (one could argue that fact didn’t change over the course of the discussion) I just have to wonder why she is still posting especially after saying so many times that she was done.

It doesn’t matter to me really. I don’t take any of this personally and considering just how the conversation evolved between sddbaker and me I certainly feel no need to compensate with getting the last word.

Anyway the “last word” thing is pretty weak since these posts exist in the thread as long as the thread does. It isn’t like we are having a face to face real time argument. There is a history of everything posted so responding to something that is a reply on my message means nothing.

I stopped reading right about here.
But that doesn’t mean that your sensibilities and interests match the communities or that yours should trump others.

This is just absurd, because it’s so absolutist. Basically what you’re saying here is “I can post whatever the majority of people think is cool, because otherwise, hey, you’re outnumbered.” Minority rights is an important part of each and every successful community. If, in this case, it means not directly posting pictures that someone else has asked you not to post… is that really so much of an infringement on your participation in the community?

That’s just petty, and you’re distracting from the issue. It’s not about “anyone getting to draw the line where they want.” What’s so damn hard about respecting the wish of another member of the community? I will repeat my original question: if respecting these wishes means not directly posting pictures that someone else has asked you not to post… is that really so much of an infringement on your participation in the community?

I get that minority rights are important

If you’re saying that her opinion on this matter is immediately invalid because this community is chiefly composed of males, then no, you don’t.

Yes it is too much of an infringement. What is so offensive about a picture of scarlett johansson? My response is, how is she being violated. Like C said underneath this, and this is the point you didn’t seem to notice, that she can decide what offends her and that is fine but what does her sense of decency define anything. She can have her opinion but why is hers law in an arena that, barring an almost categorically offensive image, (a clothed picture of scarlett johansson obviously doesnt apply) is not hers to legislate.

She always has the option to minimize the picture or just not look at it. You won’t ever get me to agree that her sensibilities trump my right to express myself.

She has the right to be offended but just her, or a few people, being offended shouldn’t trump the concept of freedom of expression. Freedom of expression definitely trumps her being “offended” by something that people can see in a grocery store line. I appreciate you trying to stand up for her “rights” but you are just picking and choosing small points to argue rather than having any sort of bigger picture.

You could argue that freedom of speech is limited if it would violate the rights of another, such as a fire in a crowded theatre, but common sense says that an ensuing stampeded and a picture of a woman are not the same sort of violation.

by GumpBrave on Apr 19, 2011 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not about freedom of speech.

It’s not about freedom of expression.

It’s not about your rights or privileges as a human being.

It’s about making this site a better place for everybody involved. If you’re not willing to give up this minor thing for that, then you’ve got the wrong attitude.

THE NL WEST WILL NAIL YOU IN THE RUSTY GROIN WITH SOMETHING --TheLetter2
www.duwanis.com

by duwanis on Apr 19, 2011 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay so where is the line? In order for us to start interacting using this new rule on this community it must be better defined than that someone is offended by it.

And by the way, what is so much more offensive about that picture of scarlett johansson or NCChopper’s avatar which has a picture of her wearing a shirt. Her signature used to say “My avatar has a message for Bobby” followed by “Curve- the loveliest distance between two points” That sounds kind of suggestive. Yet she didn’t find that the least bit offensive. I certainly didnt.

So why is this different? I know that I am speaking to you but not her but why does she get to make the distinction. And that is the ultimate problem, that she doesn’t get to make that distinction. She joined the community the community didn’t join her.

The moderators decide these things because it is their (or more accurately Gondee’s) website. That is there right. “Mutual respect” or a “universal G rating” are in no way competitive values. While they might be nice we should not base the entire community on it, that makes zero sense.

Sorry for the grammatical errors, I typed that out pretty quick.

by GumpBrave on Apr 19, 2011 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know what she considers offensive, or why; there’s also no point in drawing a line in the sand and saying “anything worse than this is bad” because that’s just silly. The point I’m trying to make is that if somebody asks you to stop, or says they don’t enjoy a certain type of post, or whatever, and the thing they’re asking you to stop isn’t really relevant to the site, then the polite and respectful thing to do is acquiesce.

THE NL WEST WILL NAIL YOU IN THE RUSTY GROIN WITH SOMETHING --TheLetter2

by duwanis on Apr 19, 2011 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions

First of all, someone saying stop and us continuing is not what happened (at least if it did I apologize and don’t remember it this way.)

Also, it isn’t like she is subjected to some inescapable evil. She has many options, and most of them are individual decisions she can make (since what we are talking about is a personal issue) that doesn’t affect the community at large.

While I agree that is polite and respectful, it is also polite and respectful to not have your personal whims dictate the behavior of a large community.

But none of this matters, since we can’t draw a line in the sand, and since we can’t rely on the completely subjective and ever-changing whims of one person. If one person thinks something is offensive do I think that that should be the law of the land? No. Is it polite to subject someone to something that they are offended by? No. Should that matter at all? No.

Again, the overall point is that the moderators decide, no one else. Politeness is optional and like I said, a double-edged sword. If we want to simplify this to values such as respect vs. freedom of speech (before you throw this out the window on principle consider that this is really what we are talking about.

If you are trying to argue that we should keep the site pure and focused solely on Braves Baseball then I would argue that that really isn’t the purpose of the site. The purpose is to provide a forum for fans linked by the common value of braves fandom. Off topic is part of a tradition here.

This of course has limits, and I absolutely agree that certain things can be objectively proven to be offensive and that those things should be moderated. We have people for just such a purpose. But I also think we are missing each other because we aren’t talking about things objectively offensive, we are talking about something offensive to one person. I haven’t heard anyone explain what makes it so unbearably offensive (especially considering you can see pictures like the one I posted and worse, with catchy article titles such as “How to have the best orgasm ever” in your grocery store line.

Why is a picture of a fully clothed Scarlett Johansson “beyond the pale” of acceptable content in your mind (and I reiterate for the 100th time that empirical evidence shows that the moderators disagree).

by GumpBrave on Apr 19, 2011 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

One last try.

It’s not about what moderators do.

It’s not about why it’s undesirable.

It’s not about what you can and can’t do, or what should be “law of the land.”

by duwanis on Apr 19, 2011 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I have responded to everything you have had to say the “respect” thing and I am unmoved. I mentioned all these things because they outweigh someone being offended by pictures. By the way, they were already posted when she even joined the thread in the first place. So while I am arguing about it ultimately affecting what people post, in this case we are talking about what has already been posted. So should 6 posts have been deleted because NCChopper found them offensive (let me reiterate, after the fact) No. And not just because that is a silly way for the community to interact but because her subjective sense of offensive (which as I said is obviously as unique as she is) has been violated.

In fairness, you started this discussion talking about minority rights so at least some point you were talking about all of the things you said we aren’t discussing. But please tell me what is the point now, because your argument has shrunk over the course of our conversation.

Again, the ultimate point is that NCChopper doesn’t get to decide. She has ever right to complain if she finds something offensive and I encourage her to do so. If so many people also find it offensive that it is obvious that it is contrary to the overall values of the TC community then it should be deleted. Or better yet, if a moderator, also an individual, finds it offensive he/she can delete it.

If you aren’t talking about these things then the maximum impact your argument has is “wouldn’t it be nice, polite and respectful and such a better community if you tried not to offend people.” But that is an impossibly silly value for a community to have. I would never ask NCChopper to be sure to have my feelings and sensibilities in mind when she is composing her post. Its her post. I have the opportunity to respond in whatever way I want. These are our rights. We are in a largely unregulated community beyond the moderators. There are very few other rules.

Now if the moderator decides that either of our posts are offensive then they will take care of it. I don’t get what is so unacceptable. Your argument seems to be more talking about an unattainable goal. So if you want me to agree that an unrealistic and impossible to implement goal might make the community a better place sure why not? My agreement to this point means nothing because the ideal is simply unrealistic. We can’t anticipate the personal worldview of every one of the thousand plus members of TC and we shouldn’t try.

by GumpBrave on Apr 19, 2011 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Whatever.

You keep talking about what’s “allowed.” When you’re not talking about what’s “allowed,” you’re acting like I’m suggesting that you somehow magically avoid to post anything that makes people uncomfortable.

I’m saying when someone says “I don’t like this,” and it’s something that won’t hurt the site if it wasn’t there, then the nice thing to do is say “ok, I won’t post it.” I have no idea why this is such a difficult idea, but I’m tired of trying to explain it because there’s really no simpler way to put it.

And her being female and me being male isn’t any point I’ve ever made. The only point is that her being female makes her a slightly rare demographic in this community so perhaps her values aren’t the same as others. Since she knowingly entered this community (think of it as a social contract) then why are her values and claims of violation (which you are making far more vocally than she is) trump cards on a community being on self expression.

It isnt because I am a misogynist, its because she is a rare demographic. Social Contract etc. Dude please read the post in its entirety before responding.

And it does seem like a problem she might have anticipated. Oddly enough that quote you posted doesn’t say anything about her being female, just about the characteristics of an overwhelmingly male community.

Well if you read the post you missed the points I tried to make.

I say Social Contract because it is relevant. We all agreed to terms and conditions before joining this community. We agreed to be moderated by the moderators.

I knew she was female but all I mentioned was that this is an overwhelmingly male community. Why would her being female be important? Because she might have a different perspective.

I didn’t post anything that “disrespected her” and I don’t see why you are acting as the moral police when we literally have people here just to insure the community flows smoothly. Let them decide respect, not you.

by GumpBrave on Apr 19, 2011 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not trying to be the “moral police.” I never said you “disrespected her.” And a social contract isn’t relevant, because we’re not talking about obligations. I’m sorry that I’ve let you pull me into silly tangents, and it won’t happen again in this conversation :)

We are talking about a social contract because just as we agreed to be in society (much more implicitly than the process of joining this blog) we agreed to terms and conditions, were given a wait period, and did other things as we joined this blog. By agreeing to their terms we signed a contract of sorts with this community and its staff. Obligations aren’t the entirety of the social contract though reciprocal obligations are at its core. Part of it is how we entered into a community and what that means which is very much part of our discussion.

I’m not trying to allow the conversation to digress I just want to make sure you are understanding the entirety of my argument and vice versa. We have interacted on several times and while we are equally argumentative and seem to disagree I am really not an unreasonable fellow.

We’re not talking about a social contract because we’re not talking about terms and conditions. At no point am I suggesting anything be made into a rule of the site.

No no no, I mean that we agreed to the sites’ terms and conditions upon joining. This and the fact that we are a community with rules makes us applicable to the social contract. Social contract isn’t always in the scope of governance or countries, it can just be any knowing agreement that mutually binds two parties on almost any scale. The terms and conditions are merely a codification of our agreement which might make the Social Contract easier to understand in terms of its application to this discussion.

But beyond all that popular recognition of this site as a community with any kind of rules is a sort of social contract.

You are missing the application of the Social Contract argument, which I assure you applies. We agreed to certain things specifically upon joining and other things implicitly (like posting guidelines- further proof of social contract’s relevance.)

Part of the rules we agreed to abide by in order to interact on this site is that the moderators can use their discretion in terms of editing or deleting comments or issuing bans (which is ultimately the point of the thread which begot this discussion.) If one person finds something offensive and a moderator disagrees then nothing will be done, and rightly so.

The pictures were posted, moderators saw them (a moderator even re-posted it) and they were not deleted because in the eyes of the law makers and enforcers of this community (moderators of this website) they were not objectively offensive. NCChopper’s (or more accurately, since you are speaking on her behalf sort of, your) subjective sense of morals and what is or isnt offensive is irrelevant. We knew all this at the onset and its all that matters to this discussion.

by GumpBrave on Apr 19, 2011 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Anyway duwanis this is silly, we are in a community in which rules were agreed upon. Obviously the rules are governed by our moderators. This bit is irrefutable regardless of ideology.

Not only was one of the posts, a correctly small picture of scarlett johansson with a title (reversing an error I made accidentally) was posted BY A MODERATOR and other images ensued.

They were never deleted. My original post was only because it was too large and didnt have a title (I Intended it to be different but I failed, an accident) not because it was crude.

So rather than saying, it offended somebody OMG, we should be asking if it offended our moderators. If it did not then all of this discussion is irrelevant. The pictures that I am referring to did not offend the moderators and remained in the thread.

The End

by GumpBrave on Apr 19, 2011 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes she does.

If it offends her, it offends her. She has every right to speak against it. Everyone gets to draw their own line. I don’t know that I have a line, personally, but I support anyone’s right to make the distinction between what is and is not offensive in their own eyes.

That doesn’t mean her opinion supersedes yours, or that yours supersedes hers.

In regards to TC as a site, it is very clear that the admin, the moderators, authors, etc., want to make this experience inclusive. If your personal tastes offends others and threatens the experience of others, they absolutely have the right to step in and end any behavior that is offensive.

That doesn’t mean everything everyone says may or should be censured, but there is a very loose application of rules in such situations. The fact that these images add nothing to the main topic at hand (Braves baseball) makes these images extraneous at best, and exclusive at worst. Simply put, this site can run optimally without these images, but not without valuable members that do a lot to include others into a wonderful (at times…) community.

To put it bluntly, her participation is far more important than your desire to post suggestive images.

You know what...

I think you are kidding yourself if you think the picture of Scarlett Johansen was the problem. You didn’t post that. You posted the bouncy boobs. That was when it became “too much”. I also don’t understand why you seem to feel that the moderators are supporting your position. I don’t believe that is the case at all. Another thing that seems sort of interesting is that all of a sudden, this is a problem, when its not been one for years and years, because until you came along, no one seemed to feel that their “right to post what they want” trumped the concept of respecting all the members of the community. Actually, the only other time I can remember this coming up, a valued and longstanding female member of the community was very upset, and the poster was banned.

So, basically, get over yourself.

You are really ill-informed and I wish you would research what you say before you say it. For example, look at my post history, one picture of scarlett johannson which you won’t find because it was incorrectly formatted and thus deleted. I was mistaken about you posting the gifs I was referring to. That really doesn’t make that much of a difference to any of what I am saying, as you are the making the assertion that your “rights” trump all else.

And that makes me a bad person? You kept telling me how full of myself I am and how obsessed with posting half-naked pictures I am (how quickly you make ignorant assumptions). Please back that up since your opinion in that matter seems not to have changed.

Anyway, you posted a picture comparable to any of the others. An assertion of your right to post what you want (within certain guidelines) and I applaud it.

Now why the apparent hatred? I doubt Duwanis, who contributed most of the discussion, has any sort of personal dislike of me or that I am a cancer on this community.

Also, I’m not saying my rights trump all else but that we all have rights and they are important. I never even said they ultimately trump everything else if you had read the discussion. I noted that there are limitations that are judged by moderators who obviously didn’t think any of the images or gifs that we are talking about were offensive or would have deleted them. Basically, OUR right to post what we want (even with their aforementioned limitations, trumps most everything else. We all have the right. I don’t think I’m special, maybe I think general freedom of speech is though.

by GumpBrave on Apr 19, 2011 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

First....

“freedom of speech” does not apply here. This is a private blog, and you or I have no right to post anything.

Also, I wonder why you assume I have any sort of personal feelings for you of any sort, just because I have opinions you don’t agree with, and I expressed them. I certainly never said you are “bad person”, I never said you were “obsessed” with anything, and I certainly didn’t “keep telling” you anything. Maybe you are the one making “ignorant assumptions”?

The fact that the pictures were not deleted does not, in my opinion, mean that the moderators find them to be okay. The post we are commenting on seems to suggest otherwise. I’m getting “okay, some people are pushing the limits, and those people need to police themselves before we have to”. At least that’s how I interpret this:

it’s come to my attention that some folks have been commenting and posting pictures that are inappropriate.
As I commented earlier, I know of at least one instance where someone was banned for posting a similar image.

Perhaps some clarification is needed?

Freedom of Speech exists except that its check is the moderators.
The point I was making with that is that the .gifs were obviously not deleted and neither was the Scarlett Johannson picture. So at that point can we assume that the moderators are saying that that type of picture is okay.

Basically they have spoken by not deleting the pictures in question.

I’m glad that you agree that we are in a governed community, granting that and that the pictures weren’t deleted obviously they did not break any of the rules of our community. So whats the stink?

Also, I appreciate that you can change tact so quickly but are you really going to respond so civilly after your reactionary, ignorant posts filled with personal attacks (which by the way are violations of the rules we agreed upon ironically enough.)

I guess I have to repeat this. Not deleting the pictures does not prove that Gondee considers them appropriate for this blog, especially since he actually states that they are inappropriate. Maybe he wants people to be able to see an example of an inappropriate picture. Only he can say for certain how he feels, and I’m sure he won’t hesitate to do so.

You were ignorant in your summary of my arguments I never said anything about my rights as the poster GumpBrave but more of the rights of any poster of a community like this. You incorrectly construed that to me talking about my rights and how important I am. You said I need to “get over myself” when everything I said seemed to go over your head.

You were ignorant in basing your first post on something that is absolutely not factual and in doing so in fact implied that I was trying to deceive everyone here by pretending to post the Scarlett Johannson picture and not the evil .gifs. That was pretty false. Again, I like the part where you imply that I was lying about which one I posted.

Also, you talk about how I am a cancer on this community because of my newfangled talk about freedom of speech, creating a problem that previously didnt exist. Meanwhile, the adults on the forum took it as an intellectual discussion rather than an opportunity to make incorrect statements that either had undertones of animosity or lacked any sort of point.

Plus, you ended the quote “Basically, get over yourself” implying that the first part of your ill-constructed post was leading to this point. So your post that was filled with factual errors and ignorance (note I say ignorance because not only were you completely wrong, not only did you call me a liar of sorts, but you didn’t even bother to check these things when it was pretty easy to do) was all leading to “get over yourself.”

You are right you didn’t go off and call me names or resort to personal attacks (even though you definitely implied that the one picture I posted might be proof of me being unable to interact with any real girls because, as you said, I don’t think the “nice thing to do is important” when what I actually said was that it doesn’t outweigh our right to express ourself freely and has no real bearing on this discussion.

Also, speaking of “getting over yourself” you posted what you intended as a retaliatory picture that no one on this thread was offended by despite that it is almost the same thing as any pictures that you seemed to have a problem with. Perhaps my perspective isn’t the flawed one?

by GumpBrave on Apr 20, 2011 2:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Perhaps it is, though.

Obviously you feel that typing long paragraphs repeating the same things you’ve said before makes you right. It’s pretty amazing to me that you keep saying I called you a “cancer” when that’s not even a phrase or concept I ever use or even think. It it makes you feel better or smarter to think your writings are “over my head” and that I’m not capable of debating or interacting on your level, then feel free to continue thinking that, because nothing I say will disabuse you of that notion.

I shall retire now. Good evening.

Thats a good decision. Your defense had gotten to where you were criticizing the form of my responses. That isn’t good in terms of cogent argumentation.

Funny thing, all of those words mean something. When put into sentences they mean even more.

Perhaps I keep repeating myself because a contextual is so hard to find from you.

And you definitely implied I was having a negative effect on the community in your own special and impact-less way,

Another thing that seems sort of interesting is that all of a sudden, this is a problem, when its not been one for years and years, because until you came along, no one seemed to feel that their "right to post what they want" trumped the concept of respecting all the members of the community. Actually, the only other time I can remember this coming up, a valued and longstanding female member of the community was very upset, and the poster was banned.
So, basically, get over yourself.

I especially like the bit “until you came along” the point is either you meant nothing (a perfectly reasonable solution if you read some of your posts) or you meant that I was negatively impacting the community. Plus I should get over myself.

The fact is that no one else seems to share your sentiments which were based on misinformation and a lack of involvement in the discussion.

by GumpBrave on Apr 20, 2011 3:02 AM EDT up reply actions

And you are giving me good reason to think that reiterating my main points (almost like I’m trying to produce sound logic and communication) is necessary because you have responded to very few of them.

Keep in mind a moderator posted the first one and I imagine a few mods were on hand and saw the pictures. Yet they remained up. My original one didn’t because it had no title. That was the only reason it was deleted in the first place.

You are trying to read into his thoughts and feelings when we have evidence (by the continued existence of these pictures and gifs in the thread) that obviously this isn’t an ideological problem for him.

You, on the other hand, seem perfectly sure of your ability to state conclusively his thoughts and intentions.

Again, you miss the key arguments and I think I know why.

Where did he ever specifically say they were inappropriate (those specific pictures) as you claimed above. You say you can only say what he wrote. Well what did he write on those pictures because I didn’t see it but I do see them in existence even as we finish flooding the thread with this issue. Perhaps his non-action is all that you need to know (as I’ve been trying to say all along)

Since neither of us are capable of seeing into his mind and divining his thoughts then why don’t we look at actions. He did not delete these pictures and neither did any of the moderators. That inaction proves that it does not violate the rules of TC. I don’t have to know his thoughts to see that the pictures aren’t deleted. But I did like your theory that he left them up as a completely un-noted example of what not to do.

Don’t say I don’t respond to your arguments. Because while you throw mine out the window I respond pretty thoroughly to your responses.

Thanks for the TC Love :-)

I haven’t been “greened” in a while.

Not to self: I really should not multi-task during a game.

I agree.

I’ve missed damn near the entire game doing exactly that.

I think we should do this more often. Just randomly mention an opposing ball player’s failure in another thread. I approve.

LIKE HOW DAN UGGLA’S DEFENSE REALLY SUCKS SO HE’LL NEVER BE ABLE TO..oh.

Heyward lines a shot off the back of Collin Ballester, the Nats' pitcher and into left center field. The hit was so brutal, even Heyward could feel the vibration coming back at him.

Striking a Balance Between Tolerance and Responsbility

I think that this post is a very good idea. That said, I have stopped posting more than a year ago because I was given a warning—a warning simply because I criticized something in an article which someone posted. I was not being critical of the poster—but I think that moderators interpreted as such.

Subsequently, I witnessed over the last year a great deal of things which probably should have been censured. Obviously, the way to deal with it is to simply scroll and keep reading.

My point is that TC is a great site, but it needs to be broad minded and tolerant about what gets posted. There is a fine line between responsbility and over zealous moderating.

Good Luck and Keep Up the Good Work!

That's a less common response than I usually get.

Most of the time it’s

Which is only fitting.

Dog, to attempt to explain my comment in which I ask what was on the game thread/pay tribute to the Hon. Ted Turner and his stadium namesake and follow it up with an assessment of how my own lackwit commentary skills would fare on TC would no doubt be as confounding as my initial offering. Best that I don’t.

Translation:

“I was asking what happened in the game thread, and then attempted to make a pun with the word ‘erected’ that involved Ted Turner. I’m supposing, however, that any explanation of this would be just as confusing as the joke apparently was, so I won’t bother.”

Notes From The SBNational Frankentour:

I understand the need for a modicum of decorum, but this is the most reprimanding
site I know of. Most just post the general Rules/Regs and cruise along contentedly. Then again, many are not as trafficked as TC.

Yes, I’m quite aware it’s a small sample size. No need to get personal, yo.
