Offensive Explosions By Gwinnett And Mississippi Highlight Sunday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action

Willie Cabrera was all smiles after a 4 hit day for Mississippi.

Gwinnett 18, Durham 7

  • J. Constanza LF 5-6, 2 RBI, SB (5), .400 AVG
  • D. Hernandez SS 2-5, HR (1), 3 RBI, SB (2), .256 AVG
  • S. Gartrell RF 2-6, 3 RBI, .313 AVG
  • J. Mather 3B 2-6, 2B, .297 AVG
  • M. Gomez DH 3-6, 2B, HR (2), 5 RBI, .389 AVG
  • D. Nelson 2B 2-6, 2 RBI, .348 AVG
  • S. Bowman 1B 3-5, 2 HR (1, 2), 2 RBI, .233 AVG
  • J. Thompson 3.1 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 7 K, 8.59 ERA

Gwinnett jumped all over the bulls today, poudning out 21 hits, including a pair of solo home runs by Shawn Bowman. Jose Constanza continued his hot start, rapping out 5 singles, upping his average to a sterling .400 and his OBP to a whopping .457. Diory Hernandez picked up his first homer and his first stolen base of the year. Stefan Gartrell stayed hot with his new team, with a pair of singles that drove in 3 runs. Mauro Gomez continues to excel in his first taste of AAA, hitting his second home run, a grand slam, and driving in 5 runs. Through 9 games he's slugging .722 with a 1.128 OPS. Unfortunately, Jacob Thomspon couldn't handle Durham's offense, allowing 5 runs in just 3.1 innings. He did manage to strike out 7 of the 18 batters he faced.

Mike Minor will make his second start for the G-Braves Monday afternoon.

Mississippi14, Mobile 10

  • C. Harrilchak CF 2-4, 2B, HR (1), 4 RBI, 2 BB, .243 AVG
  • W. Cabrera LF 4-5, 2B, RBI, BB, .556 AVG
  • D. Linares 3B 2-5, HR (3), 4 RBI, BB, .289 AVG
  • E. Mejia 1B 4-5, 3B, RBI, BB, .368 AVG
  • CJ Retherford 2B 2-6, 2 2B, 2 RBI, .158 AVG
  • J. Sucre C 2-5, RBI, .267 AVG
  • G. Rodriguez RF 2-5, 2 2B, .185 AVG
  • K. Kawakami 5 IP, 6 ER, 8 H, 2 BB, 5 K, 7.59 ERA
  • R. Sullivan 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K, 3.12 ERA

Kenshin Kawakami finally got some run support, but he also managed to give up 6 runs in 5 innings. In AA. After a 3 hit day yesterday, Cory Harrilchak reached base 4 times today, with a 2 run double, a 2 run homer, and 2 walks. Willie Cabrera was barely playing with Gwinnett, but he's getting the chance to dominate the Southern League again, rapping out 4 hits today. Donell Linares hit a 3 run homer in the first, his second dinger in as many days. With a 4 hit day, Ernesto Mejia is 7-12 in his last 3 games. After allowing 3 runs in 1.1 innings in his first appearance, Richard Sullivan has tossed 7.2 scoreless innings.

Top prospect Randall Delgado will pitch for the M-Braves Monday as the team heads to Birmingham. He'll face a rehabbing Jake Peavy.

Lynchburg 2, Myrtle Beach 8

  • P. Gosselin 2B 0-2, 3 BB, E (3), .161 AVG
  • A. Milligan RF 2-3, 2B, .348 AVG
  • J. Leonard 3B 1-3, 2 RBI, BB, .241 AVG
  • J. Terdoslavich 1B 2-4, 2B, .185 AVG
  • C. Rasmus 4 IP, 7 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 K, 5.40 ERA
  • M. Crim 3 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 1 K, 1.69 ERA
  • E. Cardenas 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 0.00 ERA

A Matt Weaver error with 2 outs in the third led to 6 unearned runs being credited to Cory Rasmus, leading to the Hillcats' seventh consecutive loss. Rasmus continued to rack up the strikeouts, fanning 8 Pelicans. He now has 17 in 8.1 innings. Matt Crim finally alllowed a run, but he continued his great work out of the pen, as did Eliecer Cardenas, who has struck out 5 in 5 scoreless innings this season. Joe Terdoslavich followed up his 2 homer day with a 2 hit day that included a double. Adam Milligan also had 2 hits, including a double, continuing his torrid start. The slugging outfielder has at least on hit in all 6 games he's played in, good for a .348 average and a 1.114 OPS. The only real knock on him so far is that he hasn't walked yet, but when you're going that good you don't need to walk.

Willie Kempf looks for his first win of the seasn as the Hillcats take on Salem Monday.

Rome 6, Charleston 1

  • M. Lipka SS 1-4, RBI, BB, .261 AVG
  • B. Kleinknecht 3B 2-4, HR (2), 4 RBI, .267 AVG
  • C. Perez 6 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 9 K, W (1), 2.40 ERA

After solid turns in his first 2 starts, Carlos Perez tossed a gem in this one, shutting out the River Dogs over 6 innings, striking out 9 , and picking up his first win of the season. Barrett Kleinknecht had a 2 hit day, including a third inning grand slam.

Caleb Brewer will pitch Monday in the series finale against Charleston.

Breaking news, Kenshin Kawakami is not very good.

Here is my theory about KK. He is the same pitcher no matter what competition you put him against. Put him in a league of Gods and he will still give you a 4.5 ERA and similar component ratios. Put him in the DSL same thing.

by yondaime4 on Apr 18, 2011 1:43 AM EDT up reply actions

No theories. He just sucks. If he wants to prove he can pitch in the majors he should get AA hitters out. With all the 95+ mph arms in the AA ranks going up against KKs 87-89 must feel like BP for many…

by TBuzz on Apr 18, 2011 3:06 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Who exactly are all these 95+mph arms in AA? I’m not really aware of a ton of guys who crank it up like that on a regular basis, at least starters.

You generally don’t get drafted high unless you can show a scout some velocity. I wasn’t saying everybody throws 95+ all the time…but several can.

by TBuzz on Apr 18, 2011 4:59 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

must be super raw then...

When you can throw that fast with decent control, normally it’s a fast track ticket to the big show. If there are some kids you are throwing that fast, they must be right out of high school or prep school or something right?

See, that’s what I was getting at. You have no clue how many guys, if any, can throw 95 at AA. You just wanted to say something to make Kawakami look bad. It’s fine to find fault with Kawakami’s game, it’s easy to find fault with, but just making a claim that all kinds of guys in AA throw 95+ doesn’t work, because it’s not true. Last year in the Major Leagues there were 2 guys, Ubaldo Jimenez and Justin Verlander, who averaged fastballs at 95. There were only 5 in the Majors who averaged 94. That’s in the Majors. Sure, some guys in AA can touch 95, but there are hardly any in all of baseball doing it consistently.

I knew this Gwinnett offense would mash and that new guy is only going to make it better I think. A great start by Carlos Perez today as well. And I am loving me some Adam Milligan right now. Just get some walks kid.

Our minor league depth is insane.
Mauro Gomez = awesomeness, cuz he hit a walk-off for us, haha.

Impressive Schafer stat o' the day

He has 7 walks and only 4 Ks in 41 PAs.

For someone who has struggled with strikeouts in the past, that’s phenomenal.

Schafer is getting on base and not striking out nearly as much which is good to see!

Why does Lynchburg suck so badly?

It seems to me that there is enough talent on that roster to win games.

by CarverM on Apr 18, 2011 7:10 AM EDT reply actions

For one thing, it’s only the 2nd week of the year. Every team is going to struggle, it’s just easier to notice it early in the year when the stats are so easy to digest. Another thing, they have a bunch of guys playing their first full season, many of whom were promoted aggressively. It’s going to take some time for those guys to adjust to the better competition and get it going.

by Jay212033 on Apr 18, 2011 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t feel snippy when I wrote this. If it came off snippy it’s because someone saying “why does (blank) suck?” is annoying to me. None of these guys or teams suck. They play professional baseball and play it amazingly well.

I didn't take you as snippy

And I didn’t mean to sound as if I was saying that they ‘suck’. You gave me the type of answer I was looking for, actually. I read that as meaning “they are a team of players that are young/inexperienced compared to most of High A.” This would explain why they seem like they have a really talented roster but are starting very slowly. Thanks.

Rasmus and Perez had great starts. Milligan is killing the ball and Terdoslavich is an interesting bat. Can’t he play 3rd as well?

by Braves24 on Apr 18, 2011 7:24 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Yes

Terdoslavich can play 3B and a little OF as well

by Jay212033 on Apr 18, 2011 8:16 AM EDT up reply actions

From what I’ve seen I don’t think Terdoslavich is going to be a very good defender no matter where you put him. He has very hard hands. And while his bat has some potential, I don’t see it being able to overcome that defense. If he could play second base he’d be in a good position, but I just don’t see it happening.

so

where do you think he ends up playing?

by Braves24 on Apr 18, 2011 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Long term he’s probably best as a utility guy, playing a lot of positions without really being good at any of them while providing some pop off the bench. If he could become that type of player he’s a lot more valuable.

by cbwilk on Apr 19, 2011 3:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I saw the same thing from him

Not a very good defender at 3B but not terrible either hopefully his bat is good enough to be a utility guy.

There was a small swell of optimism for Willie Cabrera last season

Some comparing him offensively to Martin Prado.

Is there any chance of him seeing time in Atlanta?

Nathan Richard - Please come home. We all miss you.

by ATLandUNC on Apr 18, 2011 7:26 AM EDT reply actions

Maybe as a 4th OF

But wasn’t Prado suppose to be a utility player?! Cabrera can rake and play pretty good defense.

by Jay212033 on Apr 18, 2011 8:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Doubt it, at least not this year

He’s already been demoted this year – I think it was for the guy we claimed off waivers. Kind of hard to make it to the show when guys off the street are put ahead of you…

by theatlfan on Apr 18, 2011 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Like I said last year, the way the Braves are shuffling him around, not giving him a chance in AAA, their general feeling toward him is being shown in these actions. It’s obvious they don’t think of him as much of a prospect. If he gets a shot in the Majors it’s going to be with a different team.

As much as I love the guy and rant and rave over him he is a guy with doubles power and very little speed and he isn’t overwhelmingly good defensively. No plus skills that really stand out. he might be able to hit .300 but it would an empty 300.

Cbwilk question for you!

What do you know about the new guy Gartell? Also who do you think is the next option for a bench bat if/when Brooks and Hicks are sent down.

Excellent questions

I’ve been thinking the same things, hope CB chimes in.

by bighop on Apr 18, 2011 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

First, I don’t think Conrad or Hicks are just getting sent down. They’re bench players, unless they screw up terribly they’re going to be there. The team understands it sometimes takes a whole season to realize the value of a guy on your bench. That being said, I thought Diory Hernandez would make the team out of ST, and he’s playing well. I expect he’ll be up sometime, if only because injuries happen. I also think Schafer will be up at some point near the middle or end of May.

I’ve seen Gartrell play a fair amount over the last few years in AAA and he’s a huge strong guy who, like most huge strong guys, takes enormous, undisciplined swings. When he connects he hits the ball a long way, but he strikes out a ton too. Charlotte’s ballpark is ridiculously hitter friendly, so I’d love to find his home/road splits from last year (not easy to find with Minor Leaguers). Still, he’s the kind of guy who can hit them out of anywhere and with new hitting instructors he could make some positive changes. He’s already 27, so expecting stardom out of him is too much, but under the right circumstances I could see him contributing to the Braves this season or next. He’s a capable outfielder in RF, but nothing special. He could play either corner well enough to be a backup. It’s really a no-brainer for the Braves to pick him up and put him in AAA and see how he responds. They lose nothing if he doesn’t get better, but gain a lot if he does.

Bench

So question what will the AAA team do with all these pretty good outfielders? If Matt Young doesn’t start hitting, who would most likely get called up out of Constanza,Gartrell,Mather,Ramirez and Schafer?

Same with the infield. If Conrad and Hicks don’t produce who would come up out of Gomez, Lucas, Diory and Dan Nelson?

It has been a small sample size but Conrad, Young and Hicks haven’t done anything to impress me so far this year.

by PhuckthePhillies on Apr 18, 2011 6:10 PM EDT reply actions

Personally I’m not gonna even try to answer those hypotheticals in April. It takes a lot longer to know how the bench is really doing, and by then the guy in AAA who might look good now could look bad.
