Braves Recall Jairo Asencio; Acquire Stefan Gartrell From White Sox

In what is likely a move for only one game, relief pitcher Jairo Asencio has been promoted to the Majors from triple-A Gwinnett. With the Atlanta Braves playing a double header today the team will add an extra relief pitcher for the first game, and he will likely be optioned back to triple-A between games, as Jair Jurrjens will be activated for the second game, in which he is the scheduled starting pitcher.

It looks like the Braves also acquired outfielder Stefan Gartrell from the White Sox. He was outrighted off the Sox 40-man roster yesterday. He's a 27-year old outfielder with good power, who has spent the last two years at triple-A.

Gwinnett Daily Post GBraves beat writer Ben Beitzel has the scoop on Gartrell:

Gartrell, formerly of the White Sox and on the Charlotte Knights’ roster until today, didn’t play a game for in the rain-shortened one-game series that capped the G-Braves homestand. His last game for the Knights was April 13 against Durham. The White Sox outrighted Gartrell to Class AAA yesterday and the Braves made the waiver claim. The Atlanta Braves haven’t made the move official, but Gartrell will join the G-Braves as a member of Atlanta’s 40-man roster. He will make it 38 players on the 40 man.

Here’s what we know about Gartrell in his seven games with the Knight he hit .304 with four doubles, a home run and three RBIs. The right-hander from San Francisco was drafted by the White Sox in 2006 and was one of the later cuts in major league camp. He his .313 in nine games in the spring with a couple of home runs a double and four RBIs.

“Gartrell, we have to send him down but this kid had a great spring training,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen told MLB.com at the time.

Gartrell hit .313/.353/.750 this spring, 5-for-16 with 2 home runs. Interesting pick up by Atlanta. The team seems to be acquiring some failed prospect outfielders from other organizations -- Gartrell, and last year Wilkin Ramirez. They must think a lot of Gartrell to have added him to the 40-man roster. He is right-handed, but surely they don't consider a guy with no Major League experience a viable option as the right-handed bench bat they've been looking for.
